Falcons let go of O-line guru Gibbs

The Falcons let go of offensive line coach/consultant Alex Gibbs Wednesday.

Gibbs is the "godfather" of the zone blocking scheme. It looks like Atlanta will go away from the highly productive system that helped the Falcons lead the league in rushing all three seasons Gibbs was on the staff. It's a major blow for Warrick Dunn and Jerious Norwood. Jan. 31 - 5:25 pm et

Where does he end up?....oakland is my guess :banned:

RELATED EFFECT.

Warrick Dunn-RB- Falcons Feb. 1 - 8:35 am et

The Falcons are expected to utilize a power running game going forward.

The switch from zone blocking will require getting rid of the team's smaller linemen and almost certainly adding a power back in the draft. GM Rich McKay has said that Warrick Dunn, currently rehabbing from shoulder surgery, will be retained, but his role for 2007 is in doubt.

That'd be good for the Raiders, the kid could use all the help he can get.I figure AZ could use Gibbs as well - don't know if they'd pay for it.

He should go to the Vikings. WIth all that talent, they should be better than they were. And that appeared to be the problem much of las\t year...the OL didn't know how to run the zone blocking scheme.

yeah this is old news, just made official yesterday.

Gibbs requested his release once Mora Jr. was canned.

norwood's future prospects in this league going down the toilet?
Denver, Houston, and Green Bay will be all over Norwood if he's available. Nevermind that every coach in the league has a hard on for speed. Bush has show that you can be successful with a 2 RB set where 1 guy is a pass catching speed guy. And before people get their panties in a bunch, I'm not comparing Norwood to Bush, just stating there there's room for that type of RB.

Does Kubiak want him in Houston?
GB the very thought.
Kind of what I thought. It makes too damn much sense (common philosopical roots and desperate need by the Texans) so it'll never happen. <_<
Actually, my other thought is that maybe we can pick up some of Atlanta's O-line players as well if they are likely to go back to bigger guys.
I don't disagree with you guys, but I am not convinced that Kubiak is running a pure zone system. The Texans seem to use more of a power approach than I have seen in Denver or Atlanta. I am not sure if that is the Mike sherman influence or not.

This is a huge blow to ATL, and show that they are definitely going in a different direction. Would like to see if he could turn it around in Houston.

I think that Dunn is on his way out, and they will find a way to use Norwood. But I won't be surprised to see Petrino reunite with Bush.

Gibbs' departure signals a likely change in blocking philosophy from the zone/cut-blocking scheme to more of a traditional power game. Petrino has previously based his offense around a physical running game. The Falcons also will begin the transition to bigger, more physical offensive linemen from the sleeker, smaller linemen that fit better into Gibbs' scheme, Petrino has said in interviews since being hired.
Very seldom do you see the term "sleeker" applied to linemen.

Great minds think alike, and in the second round, I see Petrino's former Louisville Cardinal RB Michael Bush being selected to split time with Norwood - and Dunn is eased out the back door.
