Farmers Market (1 Viewer)

Best time of year. All the good stuff is in. Just tore up a dinner with:

Sweet corn

Sweet red onions

Fingerling potatos

Squash and Zucchini

All cooked on the grill except the corn. In addition, picked up the following today:

Cantelope

Blackberries

Peaches

Chinese long beans

Green beans

Cucumber

Tomatoes

Green pepper.

Damn it all tastes so effing good.

So for all the Farmer's Market geeks, and clearly there are two, here is a sweet corn recipe that my Grandma used to freeze corn for the winter. She and my grandfather were farmers.

6.5 cups of sweet corn. Cut from the cob. (this is about 12 ears or so)

1 cup half and half

3 tablespoons sugar

1.5 teaspoons salt

Combine all ingredients in a bowl. Put all ingredients in a 9 x 12 glass pan. Put in 400 degree oven for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes, stir corn. Put back in oven for 10 more minutes.

Let it cool. Then put it in Ziploc freezer bags. I usually scoop out enough to provide one side dish for a meal for my family (5 people).

This is some good #### in the winter when you want a taste of summer. So good.

Our county has a pretty good farmer's market. They have a deal where you can get DOUBLE the amount of produce if you are using a SNAP card. Don't have one myself (FBG here), but glad for those that can get the deal.

I love corn cooked on the grill.   Don't overlook it.

Heck yeah.  The corn is so good this time of year.  I've grilled some 3 out of the last 4 days.

Unfortunately, The farmer's market in my town sucks.

This, too.  I remember that the farmer's market where I grew up was one where you could find a variety of cheap fresh fruits and vegetables.  My dad would come home with tons of stuff that cost a fraction of what it would be from the grocery store.

Here, our market is really popular, but every year it seems to be less "farmers" and more food vendors and local crafts.  And the fruits and vegetables that are there might be high quality, but not much better (if at all) than the local Wegmans and significantly more expensive.  Way too much emphasis on organic and such.

This.  There is a pierogi truck, BBQ truck, Frozen yogurt truck, someone sharpening knives, guy selling cutting boards, a stand selling flavored vinegars, a stand sell spice rubs, a local church giving away literature and small bottles of water, some other crap I don't remember...there are exactly 2 stands selling produce, and they only have a few products available.

Ours is  cross between the two. There are two huge farm stands with truckloads of local produce, and then numerous other vendors--crafts, tires, pets, clothing etc. Pretty crowded and requires special traffic control in and out. Overall worth the trip Sundays in season and we pick up fresh veggies pretty much every week.

My family still does this, though I missed out on the process this year.  Ohio silver queen (white) from just down the street and picked that morning.

You order from the farm the day before and pick it up early in the morning (before 7am).  Several of us shuck and dry scrub the threads.  My mom cuts it off the cob and fries it a bit.

6 cups corn to 1 stick of butter with a little sugar and salt ...no half/half.

Bag it, and freeze.  Like having fresh sweet corn all year long.  You are lucky.

So cal here - unfortunately I find the farmers markets ungodly expensive.  Why in the world do I want to pay 6 per dozen for eggs or 5 per medium basket of strawberries when I can get the organic version for half of the price?  In my area it has become too much of a "cool" thing to do unfortunately.

We are pretty lucky here. There are some items that are a little more than at the store, but damn the flavor is so good. There is still relatively cheap land within an hour of KC, and a lot of those farmers sell there. For the most part they are small family farms, where the kids are helping mom and dad operate the stand.

I've gotten to know a fair amount of them, just talking every Saturday, so I have my regulars I buy from. This past weekend, I spent about $50 and got:

1 doz ears of corn

10 apples

Lettuce

Arugula

Tomatoes

Cucumbers

Fingerling potatoes

Chinese long beans

1 cantelope

White onions

Okra

Carrots

Red peppers

They started selling beer, wine and booze at ours.  Live music, tons of great options for food to eat while there, adult beverages, spray fountains and a park for the kids.  It's about a 2 mile walk from our house on Saturday mornings to 1pm, so really a perfect family outing.

Same here in VT. Won't drive my 92yo Da on local surface roads in August cuz he - who grew up peddling eggs & butter & syrup door2door and selling what corn they could coax out of their rocky acre and berries the girls picked at a stand at the bottom of their hill for the only cash the fam ever saw - rants&rants&rants about the prices and will usually insist on stopping to cuss out & wave cane at people selling "$2 tomatoes" at least a coupla times on the way to Rutland.
