Favorite and least favorite kids shows (1 Viewer)

Best:

Sesame Street

Yo Gabba Gabba

Backyardigans

Phineas and Ferb

Worst of all time:

Wonder Pets

4 y.o. likes Backyardigans, Dinosaur Train, Little Einsteins, Ni Hao Kai Lan, Sesame Street & Super Why. Also watches a lot of classic animation and Pixar movies.

We watch move videos than t.v. We have 30+ DVDs from the Scholastic video collection - good stuff.

We limit screen time (tv or gaming) for both her and the 14 y.o.

Has it occurred to you that people can do both? Kids have a lot of hours in the day. It's not like they have to go to work.
I'm guessing someone has to be there whether they're watching TV or interacting with an adult. Fair assumption?
I'm not even sure what your point is. All I'm saying is that it's possible to spend six hours a day with your kids outside exploring the world and still let 'em watch 90 minutes of TV a day.

My 2 year old girl and 1 year old son watch Olivia, The Fresh Beat Band, The Backyardigans, Doc McStuffins, Jacks Big music Show, Pocoyo, Dinosaur Train, Super Why, Daniel Tiger's neighborhood, Blue's Clues, Juno Baby, Team Umizumi and Sesame Street. Baby First TV has a ton of cheesey educational cartoon shorts that they love, no comercials too.

Pocoyo and Kipper get the most run at our place. I like the Backyardigans best out of all the crap we've watched, except for stretch with Nina time. Thank god they don't like Caillou anymore.

I have friends who bragged about how their child could watch this entire movie/show. The child is now heavily medicated due to adhd and other issues. TV is ok for kids in dribs and drabs. But in my experience they'd rather you take them outside and show them what a shadow is, how a tree grows etc.

it aint easy but it's the most important job you'll ever have

:2cents:
Was waiting for a no-TV snob to speak up. Finally!

This.My daughter gets a show or two in the morning and then one before bed. On weekends she sometimes gets a little more in the morning if my wife and I sit around and relax and have coffee, read the paper, etc. The rest of the day we have her playing in the yard, take her to the park, my wife takes her to french class and music class, and she's exposed to all sorts of things. Yes, I agree, it's awful parenting to sit a kid in front of a television for 8 hours a day and ignore her/him. But this uber strict "no television" thing is just as weird.

Sid's "backseat driving with grandma" song makes me want to throw my remote through the cable box.

START EM

- Huge fan of Sesame Street. Doesn't feel like I'm starting my day right without an episode. Pretty psyched when there's an episode I haven't seen before.

- Super Why is awesome because my kid loves it and she's learned a ton from it. She's rocking her letters at 18 months. It's also not too painful to sit through.

- Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. Very solid. I give it an 8: best children's television show in a certain time block, but not tops nationally.

SIT EM

- Sid the Science Kid is grating. The "humor" is awful, and these kids are such tools. Terribly written, brutal dialogue, and the songs make me want to punch kids in the face.

- Somewhat of a fan myself of Curious George myself, mostly for nostalgic reasons, but my kid hates it, so we don't watch it.

WILD CARDS

- Glad my kid doesn't like Barney; I don't think I'd be able to handle this.

- Couple friends I grew up with swear by Yo Gabba Gabba, but they're not very bright and their kids are following suit. They claim this is kid crack. Glad mine hasn't been exposed yet.

Any important ones I'm missing here?
oof. Don't worry though, she'll catch up by pre-school.

It is amazing how much stuff kids learn from these shows, the good shows anyway.

My 4 year old was able to identify letters at about 1.5 years old. We were cleaning up dinner last week and we have these colored letter-magnets on the fridge. She asks us 'does magnet sound like 'mag-nit' or 'mag-net'? Without turning around to look my wife says 'mag-net'. I turned to look and the kid had spelled MAGNET on the fridge. I guess she couldn't decide it it was an I or an E until she asked my wife.

We had no idea she could spell outside of the 20 words we have taught her (her name, mom, dad, dog etc).

Pocoyo is definitely trippy ... the narrator is such a surreal touch to it all. My daughter enjoys very much.

One other "trippy" one I dont think was mentioned yet was Wow Wow Wubbzy .... kinda like Sponge Bob for the youngn's ... right down to the voice of one of the characters being that of the same actress who does Sandy Cheeks.

Wubbzy busts out into some kaleidoscopic musical bits ...the kid loves it. I find it to be a tad grating at times; but I am sure I'm not their target demographic.

Great. So you're teaching her to be more of an erudite snob than you are. Congratulations.

for slightly older kids:

START 'EM

Spongebob - cartoon comedy classic

Phineas and Ferb - another great one

Good Luck Charlie - surprisingly strong cast, and Amy Duncan = Speed  BA-BAM

Caillou stands for all children. He doesn’t have curly blond hair, a carrot-top, brown hair, glasses, or ethnic features, because he represents all children. We wanted to make Caillou universal so every child could identify with him. And they do! Caillou’s baldness may make him different, but we hope it’s helping children understand that being different isn’t just okay, it’s normal.
He can't have hair because that would exclude .00031% of children, but he can be Canadian?

But this uber strict "no television" thing is just as weird.
Agreed. If you want a kid to be happy and well socialised then making them conspicuously different by excluding them from activities every single one of their peers enjoys is not exactly Step 1. If this is followed by the kid being banned from sports, eating junk food occasionally and listening to any music written after 1800 it's almost guaranteed to lead to this:
Yes, Officer I'm totally surprised. I lived next door to Maximillian for 7 years and apart from the occasional frenetic violin solo in the early hours he was no trouble at all. I can't believe there were 17 taxidermied prostitutes mounted in the basement.
Moderation, hippies. Just because something shouldn't be done/used in excess doesn't mean banning it all together is the answer.

Totally agree on Sid - he's the only incontrovertable veto with the 4yo i mind 3x/wk. Hate the Kratts almost as much, but the little guy loves em, so that's our trade, Sid for Kratts. Calliou is the show most likely to help your child end up a whiny, entitled #### and, much as i buy into the Fred Rogers ethic, his posthumous doppelganger, Daniel Tiger, is repulsive & just plain wrong. Don't like any of the live, competition type shows like Ruff Ruffman cuz theyre all wrapped up in the nobody-loses gestalt which i think is ruinous. Have loved non-verbal shows since the gloriously-trippy Boohbah and the pantomime morals of Pocoyo is currently my runaway favorite. Besides Spongebob, that is - simply the greatest child's show of all time & i been watching em for almost 60 yrs.
Caillou is the worst. Hands down. I want to beat that baldheaded little brat senseless. My six year old daughter loves spongebob.

BTW, pretty sure Gibby on iCarly = Shuke in his younger years.

The ones my 4 yo daughter likes:- Super Why- Team Umizoomi- Mickey Mouse Clubhouse- Upside Down Show (this was only on for a season but she loves those two guys)- Doc McStuffins- Sesame Street (mainly Elmo's World)- World World- Blue's Clues- Cat in the Hat- Yo Gabba Gabba (occasionally)- Dora (still... :hot: )- Pocoyo (not much anymore)- Winnie the PoohDoesn't like:- Curious George (which sucks because it's actually bearable)- Thomas the Tank Engine- Dinosaur Train

Right now my 3 year old is addicted to Special Agent Oso. The ####### theme song and the "3 Special Steps" song are burned into my brain.

My caboose is a boy and he's finally watching TV. He love Thomas, but something about that show creeps me out.

He likes Curious George, as do my other two. Best show.

The new Princess Sofia show is owning my house these days. 2 and 4 yr old girls obsessed.

Do they sleep?

Bearenstain Bears is the only show she'll watch. Usually has a good moral and is pretty slow moving and not all techno-y like some of these other ones inckudinf the YO Yo Gaba Gaba one

My middle kid loves these books. What channel does this come on?

BB is on Sprout on Directv. If the kids (almost 3 and 1.5) don't catch BB and Thomas in the evenings they surely make us pay. A lot of other shows have come and gone buts pretty much those two and MickeyClubhouse in the morning with the nanny. I keep the tv off as long as possible on the weekends, but ScoobyDoo has been getting some run lately which isn't half bad.

We've really tried to avoid tv for the most part with our kids (almost 4 & 2). The one show that I enjoy watching with him is Thomas & Friends, especially the newer ones. The show that makes me cringe when he asks for it is Bob the Builder. One of the more irritating things I've ever watched. Lofty and Spud have to be two of the all-time annoying characters.

I couldn't get used to Greg Proops as the voice of Bob. And when will he ever marry that chick?
