Did Elton write the words and Bernie the music, or was it the other way around?
Pretty sure it was the other way around. Bernie = lyrics, Elton = music.
Been a long time since I read about this, but I'm pretty sure they did the bulk of it by mail. Bernie'd write the lyrics & mail 'em off to Elton, who would then compose some music. I seem to recall that there was relatively little interaction, at least for a while during their partnership. Each kind of worked in isolation. Maybe that was just what they wanted us to think, I don't know....Bernie's lyrics oftentimes were inane - hell, sometimes they weren't even real words. It was Elton's melodies & singing that made the whole thing work.

Oh - I voted "Yellow Brick Road". Love the atmosphere in that one, but honestly there are several dozen EJ songs that I really like & could have voted for.

This is probably the most difficult music poll you've posted so far. I couldn't even vote.

You could throw eight or nine of those songs into a hat and the one I pick out would be fine with me.

Bennie and the Jets

Ever since I was a little kid, I thought he was saying "She's got electric BOOBS" ...

Voted for "Other"

Raised to be a lady by the golden rule

Alice was the spawn of a public school

With a double barrel name in the back of her brain

And a simple case of 'Mummy-doesn't-love-me' blues

Reality, it seems was just a dream

She couldn't get it on with the boys on the scene

But what do you expect from a chick who's just sixteen

And hey, hey, hey, you know what I mean

All the young girls love Alice

"Tender, young Alice", they say

Come over and see me

Come over and please me

Alice, it's my turn today

All the young girls love Alice

"Tender, young Alice", they say

If I give you my number

Will you promise to call me?

Wait till my husband's away

Poor little darling with a chip out of her heart

It's like acting in a movie when you got the wrong part

Getting your kicks in another girl's bed

And it was only last Tuesday, oh, they found you in the subway dead

And who could you call our friends down in Soho

One or two middle-aged dykes in a Go-Go

And what do you expect from a sixteen year old yo-yo

And hey, hey, hey, oh, don't you know?

All the young girls love Alice

"Tender, young Alice", they'd say

Come over and see me

Come over and please me

Alice, it's my turn today

All the young girls love Alice

"Tender, young Alice", they'd say

If I give you my number

Will you promise to call me?

Wait till my husband's away

Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding is my personal favorite, and I'm kinda surprised to see that as the consensus thus far.

HOWEVER..."Other" came real close because of

, which I don't believe has been mentioned yet."It seems as though I've lived my life on the Bad Side Of The Moon...."

Never realized what "Daniel" was about. I had to Wiki it.
Bernie Taupin wrote "Daniel" while inspired by the events of the Vietnam War. The lyrics describe a fictional veteran who was blinded as a result of the war ("your eyes have died"/"but you see more than I") and travels to Spain to escape those around him back home ("do you still feel the pain"/"of the scars that won't heal?"), including his brother, from whose point of view the story is told.

"'Daniel' had been the most misinterpreted song that we'd ever written," explained Bernie, in the Two Rooms tribute project. "The story was about a guy that went back to a small town in Texas, returning from the Vietnam War. They'd lauded him when he came home and treated him like a hero. But, he just wanted to go home, go back to the farm, and try to get back to the life that he'd led before. I wanted to write something that was sympathetic to the people that came home."

I'm sure this will lead to major taunting.

I cannot be the only one who sang Your Song to a woman. (Routinely did for my first fiancee. We joked that it was "our song".)

For me its "My Father's Gun"

From this day on I own my father's gun

We dug his shallow grave beneath the sun

I laid his broken body down below the southern land

It wouldn't do to bury him where any Yankee stands

I'll take my horse and I'll ride the northern plain

To wear the color of the greys and join the fight again

I'll not rest until I know the cause is fought and won

From this day on until I die I'll wear my father's gun

I'd like to know where the riverboat sails tonight

To New Orleans well that's just fine alright

`Cause there's fighting there and the company needs men

So slip us a rope and sail on round the bend

As soon as this is over we'll go home

To plant the seeds of justice in our bones

To watch the children growing and see the women sewing

There'll be laughter when the bells of freedom ring

Way too many great songs to pick just one. One of my faves that has not been mentioned yet is Holiday Inn.

My favorite EJ album is Tumbleweed Connection.

Surprised that there weren't more "other" votes. These threads are usually filled with people that want to show off that they know about the "deep cuts".

Really? I always thought people chose other when their favorite song is not listed on the poll. At least when I vote "other" that is why I do it, not because I want to show off that I know about the deep cuts. Some songs left off the polls aren't even deep cuts.Almost forgot, I voted "other." "Amoreena" is my favorite EJ song.
