Favre asks Packers to release him (1 Viewer)

i dont get it.

sho nuff told me he is staying retired.

why would he want his release if he isnt playing anyway? :goodposting: :hot:

Mort stated he went down to Mississippi and saw Favre workout. Needless to say Mort says Favre looks great. Arm strength, accuracy etc. He also stated Favre has spoken with Thompson via conference call along with other Packer brass this week stating his desire to return. A letter was sent to the Pack overnight requesting his release.

I heard he was joining the Browning BuckMaster hunting team and needs to be released from the Packers in order to obtain his mossy oak eligibility.

Packers should simply tell him "No".A million dollars says he is eyeballing an NFC North team.
The Packers don't have that option. If Favre wants to play they can activate him or release him. Favre already realizes the Packers don't want him back, so he's just asking for his release. So, is it time to bump up Berrian and Sidney Rice in the projections?

Sure they do. They have his rights for this year.

Correct. Just have him sit on the bench as a backup if he insists on coming back. Tell him the only way he plays elsewhere is if he and his agent are able to work out a deal with another team that the Packers find agreeable. That way at least the Packers control where he goes. If he doesn't like being a backup in GB or playing somewhere that is agreeable to the Packers, then he can stay retired. That's what the Pack wants anyway. If they bring him back to start for them again this year who is to say they won't be in the same place again at this time next year. It's time to put an end to the games and move on with the Aaron Rodgers era.

They do, but then they get to pay his salary...

This has already been discussed on NFL total access. The Packers can activate Favre, trade him, or release him. Those are their three options. They could activate him and sit him on the bench, but $12 million dollar bench warmer is way too expensive.

I would love it if they activated him... as third string behind Rodgers and Brohm. Maybe they could bring him in at the end of a blowout to get a snap or two.

Rodgers can't handle that kind of pressure. He will fold via injury or pressure and the great Brett FARVRAH will take over!!!!

Not really. Not when its Brett freakin' Favre.

Not when he will likely head to another team in division.

I would make him sign huge stipulations on a release contract. Including that he can BUY his way out for 25 million cash.

Where would he WANT to go that would find the interest mutual? There are only a couple of teams in my eyes (Baltimore & Minnesota) that make any sense at all.

Here it is in a nutshell...

1. Green Bay could bring him back, make him the QB3...tell him they won't activate him for any of the games, still pay him, and let him rot. Will they do this? Probably not but they sure could.

2. Favre and his agent know they have 3-5 teams that would sign him instantly. Why Chicago keeps coming up...Favre has no interest there. He wants to be on a contender...Minnesota which has the best offensive weapon in ADP and the best defensive player in Jared Allen is a premium place for him and they desperately need some stability at WR. Baltimore...OK but they still need some work and their OL is suspect...Favre could have a lot of time to find Rice and Berrian in Minnesota.

The Bucs would be on short list too...would spell the end of the Jeff Garcia and his 13 TD era in Tampa Bay...but he wouldn't have as many weapons.

3. Pack trade Favre...but I doubt that happens. No team will trade real draft picks for him at this point in his career.

:P I'm sure it has already been mentioned, there was talk last month about Jason Taylor's worth and such if he only plays one more year. Would a trade to Miami be possible? If they trade him, he has no say in the matter right? Send him to a terrible team with no chance of winning their division. But, what do I know? Not much.

No way do the Packers release him. Trading him is a possibility but Thompson would be absolutely crushed in GB if Favre ends up with the Vikings or Bears and he beats them in the playoffs or to win the division. Thompson just can't take that chance and with Favre's ego I guarantee the first call he makes is to Minnesota and the 2nd to Chicago. He's going to want to do whatever he can to stick it to Thompson and beating him in a Viking/Bears uni is the best way to go about it.

I think the odds of Favre playing in the division are zero. No way Thompson allows that.

Hey, the 4th option is they could bring him back and let him start. Which is apparently not the plan, they must've told him they are moving forward. But if they are, and they don't want Favre back, they will eventually have to cut him. Unless they want to follow plan 1 above, which isn't a viable option. Every time Rodgers throws an incompletion, the fans will be on them.

All of the talk about Favre not liking Thompson makes me wonder if his retirement was a plan to do just what he is doing now.
Maybe Favre and Thompson are in it together to railroad Rodgers and send him off to his death in Chicago for a 2009 #1 pick. :P Brohm in 2011.
