Favre says it's all a rumor (1 Viewer)

Favre to Packers: I'd like to come backPackers to Favre: We're going with RodgersFavre to Media: It is all a rumor
I think that's a pretty good summary of where this is at the moment.
Or...Favre to McCarthy: Im kind of getting the itch to play.Media getting a hold of it: Favre is saying he will return.Message board posters: What a drama queen...just go away already.
or...Mort to self: Man, the summer is slow. And I haven't broken a story in a whileMort to self: Well, the Favre tree always bears fruitMort to ESPN: A "source" of mine says Favre is coming out of retirementESPN to Mort: Genius! Sure beats always talking about baseballESPN to World: Favre is coming out of retirement
this is a no spin zone fellasmort didnt say he was coming out of retirement. he said we considering a return. dont put words in his mouth.....jeez. this is just the kind of thing that starts rumors .....i hate rumors.and i think the "sources" of this story are pretty credible(players, family members.)i said when he "retired" that he was 50-50 to play this year.....where are you guys at? sho, you can't tell me this talk hasn't swayed you at all can you?
swayed me to what?...like most Packer fans, I have moved on...I am ready to start the season with Aaron Rodgers at QB for the Packers.even his brother says it is 50-50...you would think if Favre was so sure that his brother might give it some better odds than that.

(please, our lord our savior jesus christ help him keep it short....like maybe a one word answer.)do you think he is closer to saying he is coming back now after hearing these reports(not rumors)?

How can someone acknowledge that Favre's behavior towards Green Bay / TT in regards to the many reports of Favre's hurt feelings over not being begged to stay one more year is childish and still deny that he's an attention whore?

While his attitude and hurt feelings is a bit childish...that does not make someone an attention whore. The two are not mutually exclusive and not really related IMO.Not sure where your connection really is there.

SI's Peter King writes that Brett Favre "wants to play football again" and his agent could ask the Packers to be taken off the league's reserve/retired list in the next ten 10 days.

It's the logical next step. King writes the Packers clearly don't want him back, so this would force the issue. They'd have to let Favre play or get rid of him, both of which sound frightening. They could also try one last time to convince him not to play. King believes that ultimately the Packers would take him back, risking the chance they alienate Aaron Rodgers. Another option would be if Favre agrees not to join one of their NFC North rivals. Jul. 7 - 9:55 am et

If it were Schefter and not Mort I would be more able to beleive that at least some of it is true. And I don't have a hard time believing that Favre has an "itch" to play and that he might have mentioned something along those lines to someone at some point. However, that does not mean that he is returning, is seriously contemplating returning, or that there is a real chance that he is returning. It does however give ESPN a chance to boost their ratings, and they never turn that down. This is the same place that reported Clinton Portis out for the season based on a fake webpage circulated in message boards. This is the same organization that reported Eli out for a month last year when the entire Giants organization said he would play the next week, which of course he did. This is the same organization that named Leinart the starter two weeks before his coach did. ESPN's track record proves that they will embellish any small bit of info to create a story, and will ignore contrary info if it detracts from that story. They are the Bush administration of sports news. People should know that by now.

If I knew less about how these things work their way through the various outlets I would give it more credence. Basically, when Favre is sitting in a press conference discussing his impending return to the NFL, and when he says his agent is negotiating with the team for his reinstatement/release, I'll beleive it. Until then, it's just the media creating a story.

Favre is the one who has lied when he denied the report, to the point of alienating WSJ journalists who have also independently verified the report of contact on Favre's behalf. He's the one I don't trust.

I think both sides are pretty much "not talking about it".

Was Favre incorrect when he said it is all just a rumor at this point?

How is this being coy?

Brett Favre dismissed an ESPN report that he’s considering coming out of retirement as ‘‘all rumor.’’

Favre responded Wednesday to the ESPN report by telling his hometown newspaper Web site, SunHerald.com in Gulfport, Miss., that ‘‘it’s all rumor.’’

The paper reported that Favre sent a text message saying there’s ‘‘no reason’’ for a media frenzy.

Favre is obviously one of those competitors that doesn't know how to quit. Like Jordan, if he feels he can still play at a top level, then a big part of him wants to play. But I don't see the point of trying to "follow the story" until there is a story, and there won't be a story until he holds a presser saying he's returning to the league. I can think of at least five teams other than the packers who would love for him to come in and play for them. Unfortunately for the Packers, three of those teams are in their division.

But I don't see the point of trying to "follow the story" until there is a story, and there won't be a story until he holds a presser saying he's returning to the league.
Well, sorry, but the rest of the world isn't the Brett Favre Official Proclamation Team, and other people can and are going to talk about him when they know things.

The post where King lists no sources as to why he believes that and only stated that he thinks Favre's agent "could" ask for him to be removed by as early as next week?

The problem is...many don't "know things"...but they are speculating based on a small tidbit of leaked information from an unnamed source.

Wow, I really think that odds are this is one time defending Favre is probably not the smart thing to do, especially since the truth on this one'll come out if Favre finally makes up his mind and pushes Green Bay. Yes, he lied as he said it was only a rumor, and yet there were atleast 3 publications between ESPN and Wisconson news outlets that each independently verified with their own sources. You all seem to think these are just reports copying Mortenson and are blinding yourselves to the reality that what was reported on was accurate.I hope everyone who saw this coming months ago, and commented on Cook's shopping of Favre around to other teams and the denial that took place immediately afterward there also stop making accusations that stop coming true, for the sake of Green Bay fans who just wish it'd all go away.

But I don't see the point of trying to "follow the story" until there is a story, and there won't be a story until he holds a presser saying he's returning to the league.

So you have a problem with journalists refusing to name their sources to protect their identity? Journalists are willing to go to jail to protect their sources because that is their livelihood. With all the evidence that has been mounting against Favre since his retirement, to still play the "unnamed sources" card as being unreliable is assinine. Favre has been the one who's earned his reputation for being a wishy-washy fence riding attention whore. Stop blaming the media for reporting on it.

Do you not see a huge gap between saying "it's a rumor" and "I will not be playing football again, I am retired"? Cmon man. Favre isn't stupid. He knows what words mean, and you do too.

what's happening here is not that unusual with a player who has announced his retirement, what is unusual is the amount of press it is getting in terms of pros and cons.

a review of what has happened this year:

1. Based upon his 2007 season Favre demonstrated he still has the physical tools to compete and be successful.

2. Favre announced his retirement in a very emotional farewell, citing the time committment that was required and his belief he couldnt commit to that anymore.

3. Coach McCarthy stated sometime thereafter that eventually Favre would get the itch to play again, he expected that....

4. after retirement at his home in Miss, given 4 months time to ponder the chores around his property, etc and the fact he was missing OTA's and being with 'the guys'....its not inconceivable that he has had second thoughts.

5. the recent speculation by the media-reporting things his brother has reportedly said, what his family may have said, and referencing reported contacts with the team, then his email text denying his return....all point towards the very good possibility that Favre is reconsidering his decision.

6. TC begins July 28th....that will probably be the time when NFL fans, his team mates and other players will find out what his plans are...

at this point in time its clear that the Packers have taken Favre at his word, that he retired in Feb 08. Apparently they have moved on, structuring their offense to fit the skills of Aaron Rodgers. So the issue will be what to do with Favre if he wants to return? seems like there are 4 options-

a . welcome him back with open arms as the No 1 QB, shuffling Rodgers to #2. not the favored option i gather....

b. trade Favre to another team- most likely outside their division (Jets or Bucs or Miami?)

c. convince him to remain retired.

d. release him.....this is probably the least desired option.

So...we wait and see what happens. In the end I personally wouldnt be surprised to hear that he wants to return-he got bored in his retirement and misses the game. Sounds familiar ....its what happens with a lot professional players whatever sport they are in....not to mention regular folks who retire and find out they are bored so they come back.....

At any rate personally I couldnt fault him for returning but I think this would pressure the Packers to ponder what to do with him....which they really wouldnt want to happen....

tex

I think he likes the spotlight - too much. His QB celebrations (running around with the index fingers and running into the endzone to hug a WR) - are all spotlight. In comparison to the average celebration of a QB, he makes TO's look comparatively weak to other WRs.And you have to have seen how all the teammates high five him coming off the field "Yea, you're great, Brett!"I think he needs the spotlight. Sadly, I don't think he finds his off-field life very rewarding.

So...if his mind is not yet made up...how has he lied about already saying he is coming back or asking to be released? Im not saying he did not say he had an itch...I have already conceded that...its the rest of the speculation that I am talkinga bout. None of them have verified those other statements. (not even Mort).

I have a problem believing most unnamed sources in this manner.Evidence mounting against him? You make it sound like he is a criminal...its laughable but not unexpected given you are a Viking fan.

Newsflash! Dateline July 8th from some random bar in Cheddar land...

Sho Nuts proclaims that Brett Favre has indeed had itches. Thats right he has had itches. No confirmation however on the exact location of the itches or if indeed the rumors are true that they were linked to the dreaded 'feminine itching'. More details as additional itches and or scratching is reported.

"Im not saying he did not say he had an itch... "

I think for all the blatant man crush Brett Favre love that is being posted here that John Madden actually has half a dozen different FBG's monikers and is secretly posting on a regular basis. Remember, 'even if you cut Brett's legs off - he'd still be the be the best torso in the NFL.' Honestly, if it was revealed that Brett Favre clubbed baby seals for fun these same guys would leap to his defense. "But can you prove that those baby seals didn't deserve it? I heard one of them tried to steal Brett's car."

I would laugh my head off if Favre suited up for the Bears or Vikings. Can you image the mad dash for all the forum posters with Favre in their name or better yet picture, rushing to get that bad boy changed. I can see it now, FavreCo with #4 standing proudly in purple and gold or with raised fists standing in whatever blue almost black color that da Bears use in their uniforms. That would be classic!

I have a problem believing most unnamed sources in this manner.

No, I was simply using facts to validate why I called him a liar. He's no more a criminal than Chad Johnson, but every bit as much the diva. This isn't a new discussion. There have been several indications that Favre was going to pull a stunt like this, and yet you act like he hasn't done anything to deserve criticism over it. It's hypocritical to acknowledge his needy nature requires afternoon ego massages by his G.M. and Coache every offseason to make stick around, and yet decry numerous reports from multiple news outlets but deny them because they are protecting their sources.Laughable, but not unexpected given you are a Packer fan.

I think both sides are pretty much "not talking about it". Was Favre incorrect when he said it is all just a rumor at this point?

Is not "somebody said that somebody said sombody told them" the very definition of a rumor?

If I were to take the rumors at face value, I would say that Favre has been trying to avoid putting the Packers in a bad position and they may be bringing that part on themselves.

So Gus shopped him to other teams? Okay. So he asked about a release and was denied? Perhaps.

All they have to do is agree to release him and it all goes away. But if they don't choose to do that (and say in advance they would), it is on them.

Sure, it is business. But then again, does it really hurt them to release him?

Only if it makes other teams stronger...but I maintain they owe it to him to trade or release him in a straightforward fashion if they guy wants to play.

He put the city back on the map.

I understand that it would be best for the Packers for him to stay retired. But what is best for BOTH parties is a different matter.

Sure, it is business. But then again, does it really hurt them to release him?
If he goes to a division rival, very possibly. Also, if fans blame management for letting him get away. Though, it seems many fans don't think he should return to the Packers.

I think i twould be very interesting to survey Packers fans.

Assuming Favre is to play in the NFL next year, should he:

a. be given back the starting job at GB

b. be allowed to play somewhere else

I think you hit on something that he craves more than the "spotlight"...that affirmation of others (including the teammates and fans).

MOST Packer fans have moved on? I don't think so. :help:
In my very unscientific opinion, I agree with sho nuff that most Packer fans have moved on. That's not to say we don't expect some drop off with Rodgers, but the team (players and coaches) is young and everyone is ready for the new era.

How long after Barry Sanders retired did we stop getting news stories about his rumored return? I think I remember reading forum post two years ago about his eventual return that season...

If Favre doesnt play this season, will we all be doing the same thing next year around this time?

Farve Texts Thompson --

Tue Jul 8, 2008

The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, citing WTMJ-TV, reports QB Brett Favre sent a text message to Green Bay Packers GM Ted Thompson on Saturday. Thompson's reply to Favre was that he was on vacation, and the two would have to talk later.

That kooky Favre guy. He's a character. :goodposting:
ESPN is reporting this now. Now, seriously, who is leaking this stuff? EIther THompson or Favre has to have told someone of the exchange. I am officially on Favre overload......

Is it really a comeback if he never missed a game? Heck, he barely missed OTA's.

I don't think the Packers want him back but they're trying to be as diplomatic as they can be.

You are now entering the Farve Zone :twilightzonemusicisplaying: You will never be able to escape, but in case you're thinking about trying to escape, and if you're caught, your punishment will be sitting chained to a chair with your eyelids taped open having to watch a Brett Favre press conference marathon.

Just turn off the ####### TV. It's all a media contrived controversy.

Will turning off my TV guarantee to get me out of the Farve Zone?
