FBG Upgrades/Downgrades re: Javarris James (1 Viewer)

In the paid section, they do a weekly upgrades/downgrade article. It was way off on the evaluation of JJ, IMO.

Without giving too much away the article states that JJ replaced an ineffective Donald Brown at the goal line twice. Donald Brown was never really "in" in goal line situations and JJ had 4 carries, all up the gut on the same play, as if it was the only play he knew. The article also stated JJ looked better after first contact. JJ was hardly touched on some of the runs, the hole was there.

Donald Brown got all the work between the 10's last week in his first game back that didn't have his plays "scripted" as JJ did.

The article even goes so far as to speculate that JJ will jump Donald Brown on the depth chart. Again, way off.

I agree he may get more carries next week. He only had four last week, it would be hard to get less and still play.

In summary, disagree.

I can see your argument but there are a few things to consider. This was not Brown's first game back - he was there last week and was out performed by Hart. Whether that was due to rust/injury is up for debate, but he was out performed. FBGs is also likely talking about being "in" in prior short yardage situations, not this past week. Brown has not show an ability to get those tough yards yet, which is why they probably used JJ, who is less wiggle and more straight ahead (for better or for worse). There is no disputing that without GL opportunities, JJ was rendered useless. However, there were two GL opps and he got them both, making him valuable last week. Will that happen going forward? Who knows, but as long as they are in GL situations and Addai/Hart are out, I would bet that continues. I don't think he jumps Brown either, so I agree there as well.

If James was going to leapfrog DBrown he would have gotten a lot more work last week.

My favorite out of the upgrades/downgrades is on Jason Campbell. They acknowledge that Tom Cable has said repeatedly that Gradkowski will be the starter when healthy, which he is likely to be after the bye. Yet they upgrade Campbell? As he goes from starting to sitting his stock is going up?

The Upgrade/Downgrade section needs serious re-tooling going into next season. It is pretty much a waste of space as currently constructed.

From the flow of the game, it looked to me like James just came in on those packages. Both runs were those sort of delay/counter/draw things at the GL with the WR spread out (please correct me if I am wrong...just remembering).

Donald Brown, for his first full game back from an injury, looked pretty good, esp catching the ball out of the backfield. He was in on the 2 min drill, which is good.

My impression is that they are keeping 2 RBs in the rotation to keep them fresh (and from injury) since they are so thin there. It would not surprise me to see increasing reps for DoBro, including GL tries (depending on situation).

All that said...Hart looked better between the tackles vs. HOU two weeks ago. James strikes me as a 'guy' who can run straight ahead 'hard' and keep your first round pick from taking that punishment.

In fact, it now looks as if Jason Campbell will continue to start -- because that's what Al Davis wants, although Cable wants to start Gradkowski. This according to the headline of the sports section of the Contra Costa Times this morning.Good call by FBGs?

4 carries and 2 scores. Looks good to me. Small sample but for deep leagues designated GL vultures don't sit on the WW long. Glad I was able to snag him.

Is there a level of reasoning that goes along with this or are you just sticking with, this is what they said and I disagree?
I think he provided just as much support for his position as FBG's did. Since when does 4 GL carries equal threat to take the starting job?

Also, if I recall Donald Brown carried the rock on three third down plays and was able to get some tough yards for a first down. So is a bit murky at best on what will happen this week..

Out of 10 QB upgrades, Campbell was #10. Here is the writeup (from Monday morning):QB Jason Campbell, OAK - Head coach Tom Cable declared a few weeks ago that whenever QB Bruce Gradkowski returned from injury, he would get his starting job back. Since then, Jason Campbell has led the Raiders on a three-game win streak, and suddenly the picture isn't so clear. After Sunday's win over the Chiefs, Cable declined to name a starter for week 11 (following this week's bye). At the same time, there are reports that Cable continues to insist that Gradkowski will remain the Raiders starter. Campbell is a low-end fantasy QB2 even if he retains his starting job and Cable changes up, but the fact that he has played his way back into contention merits an upgrade.

That's okay to disagree - that's perfectly acceptable. Also that article is over 100 players deep, so I think we can discuss two of them for free:
Upgrade - RB Javarris James, IND - *** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Fourth string running back Javarris James entered Week 9 second on the weekly depth chart right behind starter Donald Brown. James replaced an ineffective Brown twice in goal line situations and two times James found the end zone. James looked better after first contact than Brown and it would not be surprising if James passes Brown on the short-term depth chart because Browns still doesn't look like the healthy version of the player that was a prize draft pick in 2009. If Joseph Addai and/or Mike Hart miss time in coming weeks, James could make for a nice spot start. Downgrade - RB Donald Brown, IND - Donald Brown started in Week 9 against the Philadelphia Eagles, but whether it had to do with injury or simply ineffective play, he did not pass the eyeball test as a potential starting tailback. Brown did not earn the start, rather having in fall in his lap due to injuries to Joseph Addai and Mike Hart. Brown could not find any room to run all day, rushing for only 50 yards on 15 carries, none of which topped 9 yards. Fourth-string running back Javarris James replaced Brown twice in goal line situations and James scored twice, adding more proof that Brown is the problem, not the ground game. The Colts could look to Addai, Hart or even James before Brown to start as soon as next week, severely limiting Brown's upside.
I watched all of the Eagles/Colts game and authored the above. I'm still fine with what I wrote as James looked better than Brown even on limited action.
