FF Divisions (1 Viewer)

Wondering how leagues normally set this up. Our 12 team league draws to determine three divisions with each division sending a team to the playoff and one additional wild card spot. However, we don't know until AFTER the draft which division we're in and it changes each year. I'm thinking this should be done at least BEFORE the draft. Just curious as to how others do this and whether any of you think there is real advantage to knowing ahead of time.

We randomly assign teams to their divisions well before the draft. We also setup the schedule before teams are assigned to divisions. We do this to remove even a hint of the idea that teams were assigned to divisions to gain an advantage based on possible bye week matchups or avoiding facing certain "stud" players.

Also, if you know who you are playing each week going into the draft, you can use the Draft Dominator to look at projected scores on a week by week basis as rosters are filling out, which if you believe in that sort of thing, could influence your draft picks.

In my league (10 teams), we draw numbers for draft slots, then take the first 5 in one division, the bottom 5 in the other division. The schedule is set up randomly the next day.

We haven't ever had a problem with the schedule, but you bring up a good point. I may assign a schedule before the draft from now on.

We have kept the same divisions for 10 years. This build up a lot of pride when you get to put those division titles up on your team page! This has built some great rivalries over the years. The other division is usually weaker than mine, but no one is allowed to complain. You can just make fun of how crappy the other division is. :)

I HATE having divisions and did away with them years ago in the two leagues I commish.

Absolutely no need for them and add nonsense to who makes the playoffs. And trades.

Our 16 team league lets the owners pick the divisions each year. We have 4 4-team divisions, and each year we rotate the owners who pick the divisions so that everyone gets to pick once every 4 years. It not only keeps things fresh, but gets the trash talk going early and often during the draft. Some owners pick the weaker teams, some pick their natural rivalries, but each owner has a say every 4 years and it keeps everyone happy.
