FF mag review (1 Viewer)

A sports writer for the Detroit Free Press rated a slew of different fantasy magazines:

http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article...2/1049/SPORTS01

In the "one star" class:

Footballguys.com Presents 2008 Fantasy Football Strategy Guide, $6.99, 226 pages:

The strength of schedule article tells you right from the start that if you don’t like a lot of numbers you should skip to the next article. How about I just skip to another magazine?
Wow, a bit harsh IMO. I have not purchased or read any other FF mags this year but it seems to me there is plenty of non-numbers content in FBGs. This actually makes me cast a skeptical eye on the rest of his ratings, if he was able to dismiss FBGs based on simply one article. I wonder if he just skimmed all of them to get his article written? For those of you who have seen multiple mags this year, how do they stack up? Does this article ring of any truth at all?

Here is someone that is reviewing all of the magazines. He gave us an A+

FF Magazine Review
I buy just about every magazine every year to see what everyone is doing.Of course I like what we are doing a lot, but I also think these magazines are worth reading:

Fantasy Index - Ian Allen does a great job. The magazine has not changed much over the years, but I love the capsules and team pages a ton. Their Expert rankings draw some of the best minds in the business too.

Fantasy Guru - John Hansen always puts together a great magazine. Insightful articles from someone who has a long history of winning in leagues.

Fantasy Pro Forecast - Bob Harris knows football and is among the most skilled writers in this space. He doesn't rank the players though so sometimes his words don't match up to someone elses rankings. But his words are eloquent.

Fanball - They replaced their whole staff this season,. but the magazine is still among the slickest looking in the industry. I miss Tuvey and the staff though

....then a bunch of sub-par efforts in my opinion. I have heard a lot of good things about the Rotowire magazine, but don't have a copy of it.

Gee I wonder why you're the one to point it out :goodposting:

;)

The site above is by the guy I worked with last year FYI and to say his reviews are better than some news rag schelp who gives you a whopping 1-2 sentence "review" of FF mags is more than a slight understatement.

I admit I haven't seen this year's editions, but FBG and FFI are annually 2 of the best - I seriously doubt this year is much different. Edit: last year Roto was one of the best too. Really the only one I thought was truly horrific of those I checked out (about 8 or 9 I think) was NFL.com. If you're more than 6 yrs old, don't bother.

seems like he's rating them based on how well suited they are for the very casual fantasy player. he's assuming his audience "doesn't like a lot of numbers." i know all i need to know about these rankings when i see he gave the highest rating to the cbssportsline mag. these are the same people that have marshawn lynch rated higher than addai and portis (on the website at least).

I buy the mags solely as reading entertainment. It gives me something to pass the time in the summer months.
That should answer your question.
My guess is this guy isn't very good at fantasy football either. I think he reviewed stuff last year too and loved Fanball's captions because they were funny. I think we are catering to a slightly different audience than this guy. I am actually glad he did not like our magazine personally.

I've only looked at 2 mags this season. 1 star seems about right for FBG's magazine. I was highly disappointed. I would like a refund. It was last years magazines rewritten with different players names inserted in certain places. I will not buy FBG's mag next year. I am sorry for bashing FBG's magazine on the FBG's message board, but I gotta call 'em as I see 'em. I've been holding off on my feelings, since I love the website and message board. I don't feel quite right about ripping the mag, but I do have to tell you that it was disappointing.

I don't really use the magazines too much, as I prefer to do my own research. Maybe FBG's mag is good for the more casual player who buys a magazine and uses it for his draft and entire season without looking anything up for himself. If that is the case, then I fail to see what separates FBG's from the rest of the magazines.

ETA: My wife brought home the Pro Football Weekly/CBSSports.com magazine. I was much more impressed with this magazine. Sure it's the same old same old that you get with any magazine, but I liked it better than FBG's. Maybe I just already know the perspective of most of the writers hear and needed a different perspective. Trying to give you guys the benefit of the doubt because I know a lot of hard work went into your mag. Need something different than last years magazine though.

I agree David.I found this article Sunday morning during my shift and forwarded it to Joe.I mentioned that I didn't think this writer had much merit. Sounds like a hit/skip thing to me.

He's an idiotI want to be in his FF leagues...

The FBG fan in me is very upset by the 1-star rating.

THE FF owner in me who'd just as soon see the rest of his leaguemates steered in another direction is thrilled, though

The online stuff is great but the Mag is just a scaled down version of what is online. The articles are very similar to last year which was disappointing. Then again I think these magazines are not for the "hardcore" ff guy but more so for the casual ff guy. Casual guy does not want a lot of the in depth info, he wants his outdated cheatsheets and thats it. Overall .... mags are what they are.... a tool for the casual ff guy. (the majority of the target audience)

This is exactly how I felt last year. I am still a big FBG fan, and come for the material/boards all the time, but I will never purchase the magazine again. It did not live up to its billing in '06 or '07, imo.I purchase the FFI and Fanball year in and year out. two of the best publications out there, even with the change in staff for Fanball....Even though I miss Bo Mitchell and co.

The guy writes:

Pro Football Weekly/CBSSports.com, $7.99, 168 pages: Lots of good articles in this mag, including the feature on which players got the most chances to touch the ball last season. Did you know that Denver wide receiver Brandon Marshall was tops in the league with 170 balls thrown his way? That’s the kind of stuff I want to read in the summer.
But he bashes the footballguys mag for having "a lot of numbers"?

That's classy DD, and shows that you really are trying to put the best product out there. I have forgotten the name of your old site before FBG but I liked that site a lot too and you continue to blow away the competition.

I enjoy reading FF Index, but seriously, that mag has been the same for 10-15 years with different players. The format is always the same yet I enjoy it.We do so much in the Shark pool, plus the blogs, plus the content as it is released...nothing in those mags is up to date by the time you get it. And those mage are basically a way to get the word out about different sites. i bet none of them are real big cash cows.

Seriously, I couldn't care less about where the magazines are ranked, because i haven't used one in years. The only real goal of these magazines is to get the newbies to come to their websights, where the real information is at anyway. Why should I spend my $7 on outdated information? On articles written primarily for beginers? To be honest, I don't understand why ANYBODY who's a regular member of a board/site like this one would waste their money on a mag, even if it's from FBG.

And those mage are basically a way to get the word out about different sites. i bet none of them are real big cash cows.

I would venture the opposite. I'd bet just about every mag publisher makes a healthy profit each year - just on mag sales.

My girl gets pissed off when I bring the CPU into the bathroom. That is the sole purpose for my purchase of a fantasy mag.

The Fantasy Football Guide 2008, $6.99, 152 pages: They do everything you’d expect. They’ve got some wacky ratings, though. You won’t find many magazines that rate quarterback Drew Brees, running back Adrian Peterson, and wide receiver Reggie Wayne at the top of their respective positions.
How wacky. :coffee:

The guy who wrote this probably likes lots of pretty pictures and pithy anecdotes.

Show me a mag that pours on the #s and I'm buying. Fine work by FBG as always on this year's edition.

That's one of the things I love about it. The format is great; very clean and straightforward and easy on the eyes. Why the hell should they change it? I hate cutesy glitzy crapola, esp just for the sake of being trendy. If you want that, buy Vogue.

Real men take the PFP into the bathroom.

:lmao:Only problem is that it's so big that my legs start falling asleep.

Am I the only who finds the Fanball magazine to be laugh out loud funny? In a good way. Their insights are decent but the writing totally cracks me up. Years ago when Najeh Davenport got into all that trouble with the law they must have had 6 different turd jokes in his two paragraph write-up. It was hilarious.

Exactly. If you were smart, you'd forward this guys magazine ratings to every other owner in your league.

Are you saying there wasn't enough change between the 2007 and 2008 versions?

I like the FootballGuys mag a lot, but the writing is definitely not as good as in other magazines I picked up this year. That's the only problem - the language was often redundant and clunky in parts. I mean, FootballGuys is a smaller operation than these other guys, so whatever. The magazine could just be a more entertaining read.

If you didn't have access to the board, would you like the FBG mag better? I bet you would. Don't compare a knife to a shotgun.

For what magazines charge, if it gives you some relevant information and a little entertainment, mission accomplished. If you didn't visit the site, you'd probably really enjoy the magazine and want to visit the site. That's kind of the point, I think.

I went to Barnes and Noble this year to look for FFI and FBG. I found neither and was highly disappointed with the choices i did see. I like the weekly stats breakdown for each team seen in the FFI. I would like to find a FBG at a bookstore but dont know what stores they go to. Any idea Dodds, Clayton, or Wood? I know you can get them on the website but i like to pay cash. Any help?

Thank you...definitely noted.

It is in Barnes and Noble (don't know why it isn't in yours), Books-a-Million, and many grocery racks. I've also seen it in small corner newsstands.

new staff for Fanball this year = not as funny. I was really dissapointed in it's 'random entertainment' value this season.

Have to say I am a little disappointed with the mag. Most of it is graphics related, I think the layout could be improved. I also wouldn't mind more humor, a little more fun.

the content is fine, what you can get on the website stuff, which I buy anyway

Don't want my money back - I bought it to read while eating meals at subway and the like while on the road in between clients. Just a little time filler. It's ok. Of course, no longer buy any other mags either. If I was a rookie it would be a good purchase

FBG website is da bomb.

I fly a lot during the summer, so I usually end up buying 4-5 mags to get me through airports and short flights. FBG mag is easily my favorite, even though I'm obviously biased.

Excellent, excellent job again fellas. :coffee:

Fantasy Pro Forecast was my favorite for years. I was the only one using it in my drafts 6 years ago until I found the projections going astray from my thinking a few years back. I was happy to see half my league carrying this rag to their drafts and I've since been taken with FBG and some good stuff in Rotowire this year. Frankly, giving FBG one star rating tells me that writer doesn't know his head from his keister when evaluating FF material. It is put together well and you can see the thought and care that went into creating it. One suggestion is to include season totals in the 2007 week by week stats section at the back of the book.

To me, mags are more to get you thinking about scenerios that can work out to your favor and a fantastic reference tool. Yes you can find that content on the web somewhere, but with the mag you can take this on the road and at work if you have a job where you can't surf the web all day. It allows me to think of something, look it up and take some notes. They are definitely worth the money.

Went tonight - Borders had about 100 copies of FBG but FFI nowhere to be seen. Nothing against FBG but #@$! it how can they exclude FFI and have crap like NFL.com's rag there....

Anyway FBG looked about as good as expected on a glance. Oh and thx for including an auction cheat sheet this year. Even if the prices were iffy. :boxing:
