Heathers on Wiki as '89

"why do I keep smoking these things?"

"because you're an idiot"

"oh ... right"

"yooooou two  "

Huh. Feel like last time I presented something from imdb and you said no, wiki had it as...
I thought we had decided in the very first thread ('99?) to use imdb as the official source.

By the way, thanks to all for advice on whether to watch The Abyss.

All I remember being noteworthy was the CGi... First time seeing morphing liquid stuff all T2. Or I was just really high when I saw it.

Put in "My Left Foot" for Daniel Day Lewis and honestly, I just want to see more scenes with the child actor that played Christy.

DDL is amazing though- wow

@El Floppo, @Binky The Doormat, @Gr00vus, @otb_lifer    and anybody else looking at the release dates of some of these, I should probably be clearer.

Floppo was right that when I have broken a tie before, I will default to Wikipedia because they will usually state the release date a couple times, and I usually look for the rectangle on the right where it has the first date released on there, and go with that date.  Remember this is not US release, it is any release.  So for the one that have been brought up on this page:

1989 = Vampire's Kiss.   Each site has a different site, but wiki says June 1989.

1988 = Baron Munchausen, Akira, and Heathers.

First line of Baron's entry says 1988 adventure comedy and a West Germany release of Dec. 1988.   Heathers' entry says 1988 black comedy and October 1988 release in W.Germany.  Akira has July 1988.

The only time that the sites differed that I saw was for Vampire's Kiss.  I think there has been only 2-3 times so far when the sites differed, and when that happened, I look at the first line of the entry on wiki and the rectangle on the right where it states it's specific first release date.  If I have used that as the tie breaker, we might as well just start there.   The reason I listed imdb is b/c  95+% of the time they agree, and I find that it's easier for a quick search because the date will show up with the title as I type in the search bar.

You guys all know about The Killer, right?  It's top notch action. I mean, just look at this thing

I added this to the pile too.   It looks like a couple are on hold and there are a wait, but it looks like I should get The Fabulous Baker Boys and Jacknife sent before next week.  Jesus of Montreal, The Killer, and How to Get Ahead in Advertising look like they have short waits.

I will probably start on my 1992 pile as I wait for these to come in.

soooo ... i get my lady love 'Nona in two '88 flicks now?

   Lydia Dietz/Veronica Sawyer

can't stand "Beetlejuice", but she made it watchable - ergo, pointage

Leviathan
Is this the underwater movie, or the newer documentary?  Just surprised that the one from 89 that I am thinking of would be rated so high, even though 15year old KP loved it.

I haven't seen them probably since they came out, like I said I remember liking Leviathan and Deep Star Six in high school.   Both underwater horror/sci fi movies (great '89 triple feature with The Abyss).   I couldn't tell you a thing about either and wouldn't be confident that either are worth any points now.

So, did I have to be a huge baseball fan to think that Major League was still funny? :oldunsure:
No, you should also find it funny if you are, in no particular order, human, male currently or previously, ever played a sport, wanted to ever punch Corben Berstein in the face, actually watching the movie, able to laugh, have working vocal chords that can assist in the production of sound coming out of your throat canal, human, alive, sober, drunk, high, straight, gay, trans, from the south, from the north, from the east, from the west, city guy, farmersonly fan, someone who eats meat, are a vegan, are a vegetarian, currently breathing oxygen, once breathed oxygen, or ever was able to turn on a TV either by remote or voice activated controls.

But, if you aren't any of that, yeah, you probably didn't like it.

I grew up a huge baseball fan so it has sentimental value to me, but yeah, if you don't like baseball probably not for you.
I like baseball just fine, but watched this last night and didn't think it held up very well.   I chuckled a couple times, but that's about it.   I thought this one would crack the list for a couple points, but I dropped it now.   I guess I should know by now that it will be rare for a comedy movie to crack my lists.

Deepstar Six I remember with the underwater monster...also odd that it came out the same year as The Abyss.

Other twin film releases with similar subject matter.

Armageddon/Deep Impact

The Prestige/The Ilusionist

Agreed it doesn't hold up well...definitely written for a less mature audience and well, we're a bit more mature these days(allegedly)

That being said, still getting points.

Pedro Cerrano: Bats, they are sick. I cannot hit curveball. Straightball I hit it very much. Curveball, bats are afraid. I ask Jobu to come, take fear from bats. I offer him cigar, rum. He will come.

Eddie Harris: You know you might think about taking Jesus Christ as your savior instead of fooling around with all this stuff.

Roger Dorn: ####, Harris.

Pedro Cerrano: Jesus, I like him very much, but he no help with curveball.

Eddie Harris: You trying to say Jesus Christ can't hit a curveball?

Board Member 1: I've never heard of half of these guys and the ones I do know are way past their prime.

Charlie Donovan: Most of these guys never had a prime.

Rachel Phelps: The fact is we lost our two best players to free agency. We haven't won a pennant in over thirty-five years, we haven't placed higher than fourth in the last fifteen. Obviously it's time for some changes.

Board Member 2: This guy here is dead!

Rachel Phelps: Cross him off, then!

kinda - it's all about types of players that everybody knew when it was the National Pastime. it'll barely reach my 20 cuz we kinda needed a flick like that when it came out, but no longer relevant cept as nostalgia

I am starting to think that the "able to laugh" part is the sticking point with me in my old age.

Bill & Ted and The 'Burbs are still on my list, but they also hold more sentimental value to me. It's not like I am dying laughing when I watch them.   When Harry Met Sally and Parenthood will be on there too, but they aren't straight comedies.  Christmas Vacation is holding on the edge of my list.

Still haven't watched Uncle Buck.  :scared:

We just had another example in our first poll with The Matrix/13th Floor/eXistenZ

Ray Tango: Your Honor, I have been a policeman for 12 years, and I think it's the best organization in the country. At times, I've been accused of being too aggressive at taking criminals off the streets. Well, if that's a sin, then I guess I'm guilty. All the cops I've worked with are good cops. They are... doing a tough job. And I only hope that the outcome of this trial is such, that the whole department is not judged by what has transpired here. Thank you.

[Tango returns to his seat]

Judge McCormick: Do you have anything to add, Mr. Cash?

Gabriel Cash: [Nods] Yeah.

Ray Tango: [Grabs Cash's arm] No!

Gabriel Cash: Yeah.

Ray Tango: No-no.

Gabriel Cash: Yeah.

Ray Tango: No.

[Cash gets up]

Gabriel Cash: Mr. Tango has, uh, spoken very eloquently. I wish I could be as forgiving. But I can't, because... this whole thing... ####### SUCKS!!! I mean, this is the biggest pile of #### I've ever...

:lmao:

Oh, I am not claiming mature or sophisticated humor on my part.  I will still laugh at Kevin Smith movies and Supertroopers.

You serious, Clark?

Clark: Since this is Aunt Bethany's 80th Christmas, I think she should lead us in the saying of Grace.

Aunt Bethany: [turns to Lewis] What, dear?

Nora Griswold: Grace!

Aunt Bethany: Grace? She passed away thirty years ago.

Uncle Lewis: They want you to say Grace.

[Bethany shakes her head in confusion]

Uncle Lewis: The BLESSING!

Aunt Bethany: [they all pose for prayer] I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands One nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

Clark: Amen.

Frances: [looking at Ruby Sue] Oh my gosh, her eyes aren't crossed.

Eddie: Ain't that somethin'? She falls down a well, her eyes go cross. She gets kicked by a mule. They go back to normal. I don't know.

Clark: Can I refill your eggnog for you? Get you something to eat? Drive you out to the middle of nowhere and leave you for dead?

Eddie: Naw, I'm doing just fine, Clark.

You serious, Clark?
Great scenes, but I don't think it's great all the way through.

I treat these like desert island drafts and think about what are the movies I would want along from this year, and I don't know how often I would reach for this one, hence it being on the edge.

Ellen: What are you looking at?

Clark: Oh, the silent majesty of a winter's morn... the clean, cool chill of the holiday air... an ###hole in his bathrobe, emptying a chemical toilet into my sewer...

I don't think you need to like baseball to find Major League funny, but it lends credence to the theory that only a reincarnated monster would not find Young Frankenstein funny.

Sorry - Major League and Christmas Vacation are up there on the all time quotable movies for me, along with Caddyshack.  I can have a whole conversation with a few friends just quoting those movies and it is hysterical even now.
