A couple things carried over from our last thread:

1.  Double check those dates for foreign movies you might see on end of year lists.  According to our rules it seems like several main ones are 2009s - Mother, Dogtooth, White Material, The White Ribbon, A Prophet, etc..

2.  I really liked the discussion in the '74 thread.  I think part of it was just people talking about movies that might not make the list or ones that people maybe should see before voting.  I say we carry over what was suggested in there - feel free to talk about the movies (without spoilers), but maybe save the specific ratings and lists for the PM to me and the countdown.  I think discussion on these lines were what got people talking about movies like the Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz and F for Fake and getting people to check them out for the first time.

Oh!  Hai.

I realized I have not seen four of the five Best Foreign Film nominees from this year, including the winner.  So I'm going to start there.  2010 was a bad year for me. :(

@krista4 - see post above about the foreign movies.  Dogtooth was nominated, but imdb has it as a 2009 movie.  The others look like they are the right date for the lists though.

After our brief stop in the realm of movies from the past decade, we will once again be travelling back to the 80s.   We get a year when we see Marty McFly travel to our time and Bill & Ted go back in time.   1989 will be up after 2010.

There are a few that I want to watch for the first time for this poll:  Greenberg, The Illusionist, Tiny Furniture.

Other than that I watched a ton from this year, and it will be a matter of trying to cut a bunch of movies.  There are quite a few guilty pleasures from this year, but they probably won't make it, and there have been a couple that I have watched over the past couple weeks that didn't hold up for me - Shutter Island and Super.

My quick look at 2010: there’s nothing like Chinatown or GF2 here but it’s a deep year with many very good movies.

Exactly.  Not as top heavy, but depending on tastes I could probably come up with 30-40 movies that I could recommend to somebody and be fairly confident they would enjoy it.

Nice.

So, nothing from this year screams for 30 points for me.  A ton of movies should get some points though.  This might be the first year I need watch a few of them again.

Do you go the wikkid route and the 30 pointers are just for all time movies, or do you not go that route and are saying that there is nothing that you loved that much more than the others from the year?  I think there are 2-3 dramas in contention for 30pts for me, but it might be a year that I drop down to giving more movies 15-20pts to spread the love.

I don't think there's as much that I need/want to watch from 2010 as some of the other years.  I may mostly get a start on 1989.  I was 10 in 1989, and have seen a good number of the top-end films from that year (one 30 pointer with a bullet), but I'm missing a decent number from that year -- and I'm guessing some of the lower-brow stuff that I remember from my childhood, like Weekend at Bernie's or UHF, would not still be hilarious to me as an adult.

A bunch of weirdos in here.
My comment isn't because I think it's a weak year.  I've just already got about 15 or so that I feel pretty good about, and not seeing a whole lot that I feel like I'm missing out on.  I'm hoping to try to watch The Illusionist, Marwencal, or Outside the Law (but I was having trouble finding the latter two, at least).

I watched Tucker and Dale recently due to a KP post, and really liked it. Hope to find time to watch a few more from '10.

Im giving 30 to my must watch or love type movies.  There are good ones this year but nothing screams I must have it or watch it at that level.

For example,  as we've discussed I really enjoy Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. Will watch it every time it is on and laugh almost nonstop. But it's not a 30 point movie to me either. And that isn't necause I am comparing it to my other 30 pointers, but to the other movies that year. Nothing stands out to me like that. Now.

I have not seen these movies from 2010:

Shutter Island

Black Swan

127 Hours

Should I make an effort to see these?

... and that's why we have 4 weeks to watch some stuff.  ;)
These are the only ones that look like would interest me of what I have not seen.

The Town

The Fighter

Book of Eli

Winter's Bone

And when I compare that to all of the awesome TV being made these days, and know my viewing time is limited, not sure I can justify watching any of this.

The Illusionist is 2006

These are 3 I have actually seen. I would say yes to all three, definitely the last 2.

I say yes to Black Swan, but I have a feeling that it is a polarizing movie.  127 Hours is OK, but pretty forgettable.  I think Shutter Island is good if you know zip about it, but it didn't hold up well for me on the re-watch recently.

Our next year, 1989, is the first year where the greatest cinematic achievement occurred on TV rather than in the theaters but, by 2010, that rule was out the window

Automatic disqualification for anyone who puts "Grown Ups" on list.  Yes?

PM'd my list, but here it is for posterity and with some commentary.

Tucker and Dale vs. Evil  -  30

[Rec] 2  -  30

Troll Hunter  - 30

Rare Imports: A Christmas Tale  -  25

The Last Exorcism  -  25

Devil  -  20

I Saw the Devil  -  20

Black Swan  - 10

Paranormal Activity 2  -  5

The Crazies  -  5
The [Rec] series is from Spain and is about people trapped in an apartment building during a zombie outbreak.  The second one is generally considered one of the best.  You should watch the first before the second.  Both are amazing.  Trollhunter is a found footage movie about amateur troll hunters in Scandinavia.  Found footage movies in general get a bad rap mainly because there is so much crap out there, but this truly is one of the best out there and is just so well made and clever.

Rare Imports is another Scandinavian film I doubt most people have seen.  This is a fun one is about a small village of Reindeer herders where Santa Claus was recently unearthed in an archaeological dig.  Only, this isnt the Santa Claus we all know and love. By far my favorite Christmas-based horror film.

Devil is a lesser known film written by M Knight Shamalamadingdong and its one of his better ones.  It's about five people trapped in an elevator and one of them is the Devil.  It's a really well made, well written thriller.  I Saw the Devil is a Korean revenge thriller that will remind you of Silence of the Lambs in many ways.  Very cool thriller.

Let Me In almost made the cut as it is decent, but the original (Let the Right One in) is so far and away better, I couldn't justify it.

I really liked the spotlighting in the 1974 thread so submitted for your consideration:

Elite Squad:  The Enemy Within (streaming on Amazon Prime)

It's a 2010 Brazilian crime movie with a gritty, realistic feel, nuanced characters and a plot line where unintended consequences play a pivotal role.  The focus is on the police and politicians so it's kind of the flip side of "City of God" but it's less flashy with more of a documentary style.  It's a sequel to 2007's "Elite Squad" from the same director Jose Padilha but it's a standalone story that features a few characters from the original.

I get what people are saying about the quality of TV shows now.   I have gone in streaks with some shows, but I am still quite a bit more of a movie person.  I would rather watch a self contained 2-3 hour story than be on the hook for 40-50 hours of a show.   VERY few shows have the ability to sustain for that long too, so I find myself being slightly disappointed or checking out after a few seasons.

I am behind on watching some of the newer shows, but I can't think of a show in the past several years that I would choose to watch over my favorite 10-15 movies from that time frame.
