FFA Official Horror Movie Thread Catching up on Shudder and Various Streaming Platforms (3 Viewers)

It's been a long time since I've wanted to recommend a found footage style movie here. For the past 10 years or so, the quality across the board has been pretty bad.

But Strange Harvest was released recently, and it is pretty good. It's a mockumentary style movie about a serial killer. What sets this apart is the creativity of the killings. There's some eldritch horror elements which work really well.

Downside would be gripes about the acting, but that pretty much describes any found footage movie.

Interesting. Many of my favorites from the last decade were found footage movies. I'll check that one out though.

October is almost here. Planning to do another 31 in 31. Who's with me?
I have about 17-18 on my list so far, will fill out the rest this weekend.
Would be cool to pick an Evolution of Horror subgenre and run through the whole series... though maybe it would get too samey.
This was my thought, but I do love that podcast. Have you been listening to the new season? My favorites were the Occult, Mind & Body, and Folk seasons. I do wish he would ditch the psychoanalysis lady though (I think it's Mary?). I usually just skip that section.

What I have been doing is trying to tackle a couple mini "themes" to help me focus and fill out the month. I was going to try to do a franchise I haven't seen, and I thought it would be cool to do 5 or so movies from a different country each year. This year I was leaning towards doing most of the V/H/S movies and movies from Japan for a chunk of my new movie watching.

Mary Wilde. I am not a fan either. I always skip her section.

I skip that every time. The content stinks and her presentation drives me nuts. I think she's trying to be sexy?

I feel she is going for an Elvira vibe. It wouldn't be so bad if the takes were so annoying and repetitious.

How about everybody participating in spooky season post 5 movies for the group that are currently streaming? Doesn't have to be deep cuts or anything, just a few that stick out as you looked for options.

Here is what I came up with:

Prime has the best werewolf and vampire movie: An American Werewolf in London and Let the Right One In.
Peacock had Drag Me to Hell and Black Christmas (70s one!). Drag me to Hell is a fun Raimi movie with some jump scares. It is PG-13, so it's a good starter horror too.
HBOMax has Trick R' Treat and The Brood.
Kanopy had Cube
For those with Shudder or AMC+, and want a really weird, ****ed up stop motion animation movie Mad God might be up your alley. This one messed me up.
It looked like Tubi had The Bay (2012), which is a found footage movie I always have recommended but never see streaming. It has a great use of the multiple cameras from phones, police dashboards, security cameras, etc.. as it tells the story of a town dealing with a parasitic outbreak.

And no longer accepted... it's like giving us the take from a phrenology expert or telling us how the balance of humors explains a movie.

Top horror movies on my JustWatch list that I haven't seen... I'm listing 8 because Kanopy is weird:
I Saw the Devil - Kanopy
The Skin I Live In - Kanopy
Midsommar - HBO Max
Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer - Prime
The Black Phone - Peacock
A Girl Walks Alone at Night - Kanopy
Dead Calm - Tubi
Oddity - Hulu

Wolf Man (2025)

Pretty predictable movie about a family traveling to a remote cabin to “get away from it all”, and run into the local legendary wolf face man.

Terrible dialogue and no real storyline and what little there is you can see coming from a mile away. Pointless movie with better choices in the genre.

If you like Henry you may like Man Bites Dog which is Henry turned on it's head. Cheeky, violent and almost fun.

If I had to pick 5 right now.

Weapons - The best horror move this year
Bring Her Back - The second best horror movie this year
28 Years Later - The third best horror of the year.
Strange Harvest - Recommended it above, but only if you're a fan of found footage/mockumentary style. This is good if you like the subgenre but likely wont win you over on the subgenre.
Suspiria - My # 2 movie from our countdown. Just amazing in all aspects. Check to see if you have a local showing with Goblin playing the soundtrack live.

5 from my countdown list that are not well known and would probably be new and interesting to some of you making a list of 31 movies.

Erementari - Spanish Horror/Fantasy that is just really well made and has great cinematography to boot. It's a really well told fable.
Martyrs - French version only. I always recommend this as a movie with torture that has some meaning behind it other than the "extreme" factor of the graphic scenes.
Goodnight Mommy - Really creepy and ultimately brutal Austrian film. The ending scene doesnt hold back its punches. Memorable film for sure.
Baskin - The European theme continues with this Turkish movie. It's kind of like the Turkish Hellraiser, but with a much more grim and graphic depiction of a hell-like environment.
[REC] - Another Spanish film. This is one of the gold standard movies for found footage. Definitely on the FF Mt. Rushmore. Really well made and the ending will stick with you.

Good list. Thanks for the reminder about The Skin I Live In. I've been meaning to get to that one, too.

I started early, as 1/day sometimes isn't doable. I want to try to get at least 25 watches that ones I've never seen before.

Extraterrestrial (2014) - This one was bad. I took a chance because it was by the directors of Grave Encounters, which is a found footage movie I dug. This one isn't FF, but the acting was terrible and I struggled getting through it. I'd pass on this one. 3/10

Best Wishes to All (2022) -
THIS was more like it. It is a Japanese movie about a nursing student visiting her grandparents and **** gets very weird. A lot of WTF did I just see, or what the hell did they just say moments. Very unsettling, and I really dug this one. 8/10. Great looking movie and it was really well shot. This one is on Prime.

Beginnings of my list. These are either upcoming releases or movies that have been posted here that are well received and I haven't yet seen.

V/H/S Halloween - An annual must watch for me even though the series has been hit and miss.
Best Wishes to All
The Black Phone
- Never watched the first one. If the second makes it to VOD in October, I'll add it.
Smile 1/2 - Same

It seems that Prime and AMC+ are going to be a main source this year. Here is what I added last night randomly scrolling through and some themes/decades that stood out as options that I haven't seen:

80s: Dr. Giggles, Necromancer, Stage Fright, Possession
From Japan: Best Wishes for All, Howling Village, Cube, New Religion
60s : The Evil Eye

Random: The Lair, Awake, Nosferatu, Blood Quantum, Clown in a Cornfield, Hell Hole, Deer Camp '86, Tigers Are Not Afraid, Tumbbad, and Dangerous Animals.

This will be my October 1st watch, thanks for the recommendation.

As in you had lower than the group, higher, or a mix?

I had a blast with Deer Camp '86 (2022), and don't get it's middling reviews. IMDB description:

In the fall of 1986, six knuckleheads from Detroit travel north to partake in the annual tradition of deer hunting. But something horrific has been awakened and the hunters become the hunted.

Your enjoyment will be tied to your enjoyment of the core gang and their humor. If you aren't along for the ride with that in the first 10mins or so (especially Buck), I would say this will be a bumpy ride. I found myself laughing a lot, mainly at Egbert - which is who I would be in the group. This one was right on brand for me and I could see it sneaking into my annual comedy/horror rotation for the season. 7.5/10 this one was also on Prime.

It was a mix, but most of them I had ranked lower than consensus.

A few that came to mind: Host, Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum, Creep, The Visit, Hell House LLC, One Cut of the Dead, Deadstream, Incantation, and The Houses October Built. I think I am forgetting a few as well.

Yeah, a lot of those were at the end of the era I was talking about where a lot of great found footage was being released, these included. Since then, not much to talk about.

Hell House is a great example. The first one is brilliant. The newer sequels, not so much.

One of the "better" found footage franchises of the last several years has been Horror in the High Desert, and even that is just ok and seems quite amateurish compared to the greats.

I can't even rely on my usual FF subreddit or FB communities anymore because it seems like standards have dropped greatly. A movie called The Man with the Black Umbrella was recently released and got several good reviews in the community. I watched it and it was hot garbage throughout.

Gonna try to get through these this month (subject to approval from Mrs Lambskin…so we’ll probably watch half at best and watch something “she saw on a TikTok list” instead)
