FFA Official Horror Movie Thread Catching up on Shudder and Various Streaming Platforms (3 Viewers)

Watching Maxxine tonight.

What was he first film in this trilogy? I watched X and loved it.
Release order was X, Pearl, Maxxine but I think the chronological order is Pearl, X, Maxxine ?
X and Pearl were awesome. That smile at the end of Pearl.......earned her money on that one.

Mia Goth was born for these types of movies.

I had actually thought the chronological order was Pearl, Maxine, X.......but obviously could be wrong there.

Edit....well, since Maxxxine is set in the 80s, it must be Pearl, X, Maxxxine

Talk to Me (Paramount+): 2022 Aussie horror movie, IMDB 7.1. It has the LOTR Eowyn actress, Miranda Otto, playing a mom. I didn't recognize any other actors, but they were good. Teenagers have a plaster hand they can use to contact dead people and let them take over for 90 seconds. This will shock you, but things go badly. The ending was unexpected - I'm not 100% clear on how it went down or who made it through... this was pretty good. 7.1 might be high, but it was worth watching. It wasn't especially scary, though the dead people were generally gross. The makeup was great when people allowed themselves to be taken over.

I hadn't seen Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer since seeing it in the theater when it came out in 1986. It still holds up very well, except for one cheesy effect. Overall it's even grittier now with the backdrop of 80's Chicago. Michael Rooker has had a solid career. From this, his debut to Horizon: An American Saga, which I just watched last week. And of course, his great role on The Walking Dead.

Silent Night--movie was released back in 2021 but went under the radar. It is a British Christmas movie with some familiar faces. I would say go in blind and try and figure out what this movie is all about. I got this recommendation from a guy I follow on Tiktok and I made my wife go in blind last night and she liked it.

Identity (Paramount+): 2004 thriller, I'll put it in the horror category due to feel and the final scene. IMDB 7.3, with a really good cast: John Cusack, Ray Liotta, Amanda Peet, John C McGinley. Two parallel stories happening:
1. A smattering of people end up in a hotel during a storm, and some slasher is killing them off.
2. A hearing is happening for a murderer to see if he's crazy or not.
This is my second time seeing this movie. I remembered the basics of how those people in the hotel are linked and what's going on, but no details of who's next or how anything happened. This was a good rewatch. JCMcGinley's character was a bit annoying (intentionally, but still annoying), otherwise I thought the acting was good. It was well made. Give it a watch.

I remember seeing this movie when it came out, but it's been long enough that I no longer remember exactly what the twist is. I should watch for this the next time it's on a streaming service that I subscribe to -- I know I've seen it out there.

I've seen the first two Terrifier movies so decided to check out All Hallow's Eve. It's worth it just to check out Art but the rest isn't very good. He's featured in the beginning and the end. I wound up fast forwarding through most of the middle of the movie. It's a different actor playing Art but he's just as effective in the role. I do think the Terrifier Art is better but not by much.

available on Tubi, btw

Underrated flick. Great characters throughout and a really nice twist to cap it off. And it works well on repeated viewings much like Psycho because of how well acted the movie is and how good the story was written.

Enjoy.

Hmmm, trailer doesn't look familiar. Might check it out tonight.

If you liked that, check out Frailty.

Another awesome movie. Bill Paxton directed and starred in this diddy.

Great movie.

[REC]3 (Tubi) stinks. IMDB 5.0. The only nonstandard zombie things it does are lame - leaning into the bad explanation from Rec2 (which was otherwise better than expected). The ending isn’t bad, but stop at 2 in this series.

That is the wedding one right? Worth a watch imo.

I have about a half hour left of Rec2 and was going to ask if I should continue to the next one

It's not nearly as good as the first or even the second, but it's still fun.

Arcadian (Shudder) - a fairly subdued Nick Cage against monsters. Felt like a grimmer Quiet Place. Couple of WTF scenes but overall thought it was solid though never need to see again. Creatures somehow manage to seem original yet extremely awkward.

"Thanksgiving" was one of the bloodiest slasher films I've seen in a long time, Mrs almost made me turn it off, I thought it was funny although very messy.
Liked the store manager being run over and hair being pulled off the scalp slowly by a tangled cart, depends on your Black Friday shopping experiences pre-Amazon

Finished REC2. Not sure why it took me so long because I really liked the first one. I wasn't a fan of the direction this took at first but it wasn't so bad. Not as much intense zombie action of the first one but enough tension to make it worthwhile and the ending was very good. I'll probably check out the 3rd one. Does it pick up again right after the 2nd?

3rd one takes place at a wedding. The connection is established through a bit of dialogue that is blink-and-you-miss-it type stuff. Still, I liked it enough.

Concurrent - we see the REC building in the background on TV coverage (it's a bit forced - they change the focus of the shot to make sure you see it). If there were any connections, I missed them.

I'll be checking out Smile 2 this weekend on Paramount Plus. Just dropped yesterday.

Not really horror but Beetlejuice Beetlejuice hit Max today, may check that out this weekend as well.

I thought Smile 2 was even better than the first one.

Will check out the new Beetlejuice as well.

The uncle says something about the building

Popped in my newly received 4K of Godzilla Minus 1

Man…..this is seriously the best Godzilla movie ever made bar none. And it’s not so much about Godzilla himself (which IMO Toho did an amazing job of paying homage to the 1954 movement and gait of the big lizard) but the fantastic character development.

Just a great movie.

The Coffee Table - yes, a shocking moment and some gut wrenching emotions but overall meh. I kept waiting for a twist somehow.

V/H/S/2 - I wasn't a big fan of the first one but the sequel was very good, especially the zombie with a GoPro segment and the Indonesian cult.
Looking at rankings of the movies, it looks like VHS94 comes in as the next favorite, so I'll probably check that one out next.

After the first two, there is a massive dip in quality unfortunately.

Reviews of VHS Beyond, which came out this year, say it compares with the first 2 and sometimes VHS94 ranks in the Top 2. I'll probably stop there.
The only universally panned one is VHS Viral.

V/H/S 94 was pretty good! A couple of them take a while to pick up and the wraparound story isn't very good but it's worth checking out.
Hail Raatma!

I don't even know which VHS movies I've seen, maybe 2 or 3 of them. Does it matter if you've seen all of them for VHS Beyond?
Guessing no, but figured I'd ask.

Late Night With the Devil sucked.
I enjoyed that a lot.

Different strokes for different folks.

Watched Speak No Evil and it was solid. I enjoyed the original foreign version a lot more though. Especially the gruesome ending of the original.

James McAvoy as usual owned his role and was the absolute highlight of this American version.

Totally Killer (Prime): time travel horror movie - I’ve been watching a bunch of both of these genres lately so this was a nice crossover. It’s pretty much Scream crossed with Back to the Future, to the point where they mention both. IMDB 6.5, no complaints about that rating. I liked what a modern teen was surprised by in the 80s - mostly security (school, data) and respect for others. Some funny things to remember like completely smoke-filled cars and getting rides from random people. The slasher bits were a little more brutal than expected.

ETA: I expected a TikTok dance section to blow 80s kids’ minds, it was all primed… and didn’t happen. I assume the actress doesn’t dance.

My wife and I have seen both. The original left both of us so angry at the actions of that couple at the end. Very few movies actually elicit that emotion, so I guess in that sense it did the job it was supposed to do.

Now in the remake, had this couple been switched with the couple in the original one, I think I would have stood up and cheered. They were both so unlikable in so many ways. Again I found myself angry at a movie, especially the scene (not giving much away here) where they are trapped in the room and the dad sits down and starts wailing like a little girl about "I don't know what to do."
What the heck man?!?

The saving grace was buff McAvoy in the movie. His performance (as usual) was amazing and made this movie.

Late Night with the Devil (Hulu): I liked it. It felt a bit like an episode in an anthology more than a real movie, but I thought it was fun to watch it happen. IMDB 7.0 seems a bit high, but it's short and good enough.
