FFA Official Horror Movie Thread Catching up on Shudder and Various Streaming Platforms (1 Viewer)

I might to pivot another double feature. I forgot the wife works early and she wanted to watch The Lighthouse before The Northman as well.

How about Tusk + The Fly??

Haven’t updated in a while because of being out of town, but a nice rewatch of The Ritual was had last night. Looking forward to The Witch tonight.

26th - Daddy's Head (AMC+) Saw this based on a recommendation upthread. This one took time to build the core characters, and then wow! This one was certainly unique yet kind of an amalgamation of The Babadook and Under the Skin with a dash of The VVitch. Not everything is thoroughly explained, which is a good thing. I honestly wish this had a different title, but if that's my primary criticism, it's one that can easily be overlooked. This one would be great on Halloween night. Grade A-
Might fire this one up next, although that’s likely to be a few days away for me, busy weekend

Is Creep found footage / shaky style all the way through or just the beginning? Tried watching last night and wife made me stop it. I don’t particularly care for that format either but I’ve heard it’s good and I like Duplass so I might watch on my own

Yeah, it's that way the whole time and it's worth the watch IMO.

MadS

Add this to your monthly watch lists. It's on Shudder. Worth signing up for. It's that good. Best unique take on zombies/contagions since 28 Days Later.

It's French which should give you an idea the madness you're in for. It's also shot in one continuous shot/take and it works incredibly well with everything going on with the characters.

Go in blind.

The VVitch only gets better the more I watch it. Nothing else, the attention to detail and the fact this was Eggers' debut is worth the watch. If I was running a horror studio I would just give Aster and Eggers all the $. To me this is a 10/10 horror movie.

It looks like Tusk got to my library, so I will pick that up and watch it this weekend.
Huge fan.

Really, really interested in people's thoughts on Tusk.
I knew absolutely nothing going in. I used to be a Kevin Smith fan until he got way too into weed, but I tried to watch some of his newer movies a while back, including Yoga Hosers (which blew). Tusk started out like a Kevin Smith movie with some podcasters, and it eased toward horror for a while before the event. After the event, it was just pure wtf until the end. I really liked it in those circumstances - no idea it was going to be horror, no word of mouth, just completely blind, kind of expecting another Kevin Smith movie.

Fright Night (85): Good 80's vampire movie with some humor sprinkled in. Loved both Chris Sarandon and Roddy McDowell in their roles and who can't enjoy Marcy from Married With Children. Pretty good practical effects for the time as well, B+

Saw Smile 2 in the theater today and was disappointed. Not nearly as good as the first one. I don’t want to give any spoilers but like most horror movies, they have the opportunity to do future Smiles if they want.

New to me-

Fright Night(remake) - 8/10, Started out more light hearted than i thought, then got into it. Fun for sure

Hush- 8/10, Really enjoyed how they built tension here, love the lead actress too.

Oddity- 8/10, One of the better jump scares imo, my wife almost fell off the couch.

The Invitation (2015)- 7/10, Slow build of anxiety during a dinner party with a group of old friends.

Significant Other- 7.5/10, a few twists and turns as a young couple go backpacking in the woods. really enjoyed this and didn't expect a few of the twists.

Apartment 7A- 6/10, First semi dud of the month. Julia Garner is great in it, but the story overall is meh.

What You Wish For-7/10 - Nick Stahl really has changed his look. Enjoyed this chefy, rich people dinner flick, but yeah it get depraved.

Deathgasm- 7.5/10, Heavy metal meets demons. Fun old school type of gore-horror/comedy with practical effects. Enjoyed it.

The Nun II- 7/10, Enjoyed it more than the first one and i liked that one too. Enjoyed the characters and The Nun is just creepy imo

The of House of the Devil- 5/10, College girl that needs money takes up a babysitting gig in a creepy house, but nothing really happens until the end. Set in the early 80s, and they captured that well, even filming-wise. Lot's of zooms and long shots, that said, it was pretty meh.

Malignant- (2021) 7.5/10, If movies were races, The House of The Devil is a turtle race and Malignant is an F1 race. Lights out and away we go! The lead is plagued by dreams of people being killed...but they end up actually being dead the next day. I thought it was well done for what it did and how they tied it together.

Session 9, 7.5/10, An asbestos removal team takes a job at old insane asylum. Liked the slow build into everyone potentially losing it and them not trusting each other, really liked the ending.

The Endless, 7.5/10, Two brothers journey to a cult camp that they were at years ago. Thought it was well done and built to a good ending. Mixed in a little sci-fi which is always nice imo

Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse, 7.5/10, Very fun zom-com... Shawn of the Dead meets Superbad. This will definitely go in the rewatch routine

Mother!, 7/10, Jennifer Lawrence and the dude from no Country for Old Men start having house guest arrive at their house. It's filmed in a different way, lots of following around and camera turns from front to back, if that makes sense. We enjoyed it, but it does pump up the anxiety a bit of just not being in control. My wife texted my this morning saying it gave her nightmares lol

V/H/S 2, 7.5/10, Actually surprised I hadn't seen more of this series as I really enjoyed the first one. Love the shorts tied into the main storyline, will defiantly watch more of the series soon.

Lake Mungo, 6.5/10, Really slow FF flick, some decent "spooky" things going on but the middle of the story is very thin and slow. Worth a watch, just make it through the slog in the middle.

V/H/S Viral, 6.5/10, easily third best so far out of the three i've seen. That multiverse one was meh and the skateboard kids went on a bit too long. Also the weakest "wrap around" story of the three.

As Above So Below, 8/10, Finally got around to watching this as it was recommended for The Decent fans and it did not disappoint. Very well done and you get the same claustrophobic feel as The Descent.

Anything For Jackson, 8/10, An elderly couple try to bring back their grandson from the dead. Really like the couple, they were very good imo and you kind of feel for them as they lose control of what they were trying to do.

You're Next, 8/10, One of the baddest *** final girls ever imo. Fun home invader movie with some nice kills

new ones-

The Blackcoat's Daughter, 6/10 - I liked where this one started out and the middle was good, but didn't like the way they finished it off. Well done and very stabby, but for the most part it was just ok.

The Devil's Backbone, 7.5/10- Love del Torro, so this has been on my list for a while and i finally got around to it. A little Lord of the Flies-like as it's a bunch of boys who end up trying to escape a hold during the Spanish War. Wasn't as much horror as I expected, but it gets intense and is well done. Kid acting was good too

Daddy's Head, 8.5/10- Really enjoyed this one, it got a few gasps from me that most movies don't. Loved the setting of this too, thought it was pretty original and still didn't go down the road i expected. Thanks @Keith R

Train to Busan (#23 on the horror countdown). This was a rewatch as I had it ranked in the 50's. It is definitely one of the most unique zombie movies that is very well executed. Great characters and action, however, I am not sure I would move it up too much in my rankings and 23 seems very high to me.

re-watched a couple this weekend-

The Hand (1981)- First time since I was a kid and it brought back some memories of why I never watched it again lol.

Silent Hill- One of my favorite underrated movies. Pyramid head skin-rip....:chills:

Michael Caine "The Hand?? Oh man I remember watching that when I was like 9 and thinking it was terrifying, like seeing hands crawling toward me from the corner of my eye scary, assuming it doesn't hold up a bit now ha.

Yes and exactly how i felt

I didn't think Maxxine was as bad as others have been saying. The worst of the 3 but still worth checking out to finish up the trilogy. Pearl was the best of the 3, imo.
I do think it's cool that they made a trilogy out of three wildly differently films in terms of tone and style.
It's definitely a strange trilogy in that respect but it worked. Mia Goth was excellent in all 3

27th - House of Spoils (Prime) This just dropped on Prime and attracted the wife, so I watched it. The setup is that a sous-chef is lured from a high-prestige restaurant to become head chef at a brand new location in a very old building. Personally, I was more captivated by the initial situation and the struggles innate to the chef and new restaurant than I was to the horror elements once they entered the picture. The strength of this film is the characters, but the lack of compelling actual horror means I cannot recommend this for an October film fest. Grade C-

28th - Caveat (AMC+) From the same director as Oddity, which I rated very highly. The smaller budget is evident here but the director still knows how to tell a gripping story. A down-on-his-luck drifter is hired to look after his landlord's niece, only to discover more and more oddities and job requirements that should have been dealbreakers. A little too slow-paced, even for me, but what does happen will keep one interested and, at moments, scared. Worth a look. Grade B-

I feel like we already need to redo this with The Substance and MadS out now.

This was very good. Got a few solid jumps from me and i really liked the acting. Had a pretty unique...creature in it also.

Chopping Mall on Peacock. Surprisingly “good” 80s B movie. It’s Fast Times meets Robocop as a group of horny teens (who look like they are pushing 35) stay after hours in a mall for a sex party only to be slaughtered by broken security robots. It’s pretty darn funny.

I am up to 30 after a very weird stretch of movie over the last couple days: The Fly, Daddy's Head, Tusk, and The Sentinel . The Fly's f/x are as good as always, as is the heart of the story and the end, but I found myself liking it less than I remember. Daddy's Head was freaking me out a bit as I watched with the headphones on. The sounds and jump scares got to me. The Sentinel was every bit the bizarre 70s movie I was hoping it was going to be. My 4am in the morning, I am having trouble sleeping and feel a bit loopy viewing of Tusk was great. I had a blast with the movie, but like it more after knowing the genesis of the story and listening to that podcast this morning as well. I am glad I got to that one this month.

OK, so I need some help from the fine people in this thread. I have a full setup in the basement that I want to utilize for some immersive horror movies. Things that take advantage of sight and sound. I'll be watching on a 110" screen with a full 5.1.4 ATMOS (3 front L-C-R, 2 surround rear, 2 above front and 2 above rear with a subwoofer) setup. Assuming I can find a good sound mix, which horror movies would fall into the "must-see" category given that setup?

Looking forward to these recommendations!

Watched Phantasm today. It’s been a looong time since I’ve seen it. Going for Phantasm II tomorrow, but no further in the series.

Been awhile since I watched it, but I feel like Sinister had some great sound to it.

The Descent has good sound and the claustrophobia effect.

This might sound counterintuitive, but my vote is for A Quiet Place. When I saw it at the theater, you could feel everyone there trying to be quiet, not even chewing popcorn. Your setup would amplify every little noise in the film, adding considerably to the tension.

I'll also second The Descent.

It's might seem like a weird suggestion, but A Quiet Place was one that came to mind. Annihilation would be another that I remember having freaky sounds.

I also feel like the found footage ones could be fun, I don't remember much shakiness from Grave Encounters. VHS might also be a good one.

Halloween 2018

The soundtrack is fantastic. And this is arguably the best sequel in the entire franchise.

If you enjoy it follow it up with Halloween Kills.

Bodies, Bodies, Bodies (Max): I watched this on a plane before and liked it. I think you can only watch it twice. The first time, you get the full effect. The second time, you remember the basics of the ending, so everything is much less effective, but you look for different things. I don't think a third watching would work unless you forget everything. Anyway, I liked it the second time, but not as much as the first when I didn't know what was up. Every character is detestable other than Lee Pace.

The Witch - while a slow burn, it’s very creepy and visually stunning. I wish I was able to understand the Father better - I considered going with subtitles but just don’t like them.

This I can get on board with. I loved it when I first saw it, but have liked it a little less on each of the rewatches.
