FFA Official Horror Movie Thread Catching up on Shudder and Various Streaming Platforms (2 Viewers)

This seems a good place to ask this question. My 9 year old, who hasn't seen a real horror movie, is adamant about hosting a party and watch one with his friends. The hard part is, which movie? He's aware of the slasher/killer movies, which I don't think are quite appropriate, and Shaun of the Dead. I've personally been advocating for Poltergeist. Now I'm starting to wonder if that is even too severe.

Any thoughts on entry level titles?
Night of the Living Dead, the original.

I took a different angle for my kids - eased toward Alien/Cloverfield using similar movies. Super 8, Pacific Rim, Terminator, Predator, Edge of Tomorrow.

A Quiet Place might work. Prey might be another - it would be interesting to see what someone thought of that movie if it's the first in the series they've seen.

Both great.

Late Night with the Devil is available on Hulu, so I plan to check it out soon.

Hysteria on Peacock is fun through two episodes. It's basically Stranger Things but with Satanic panic.

I'll repeat my tout for Strange Darling. Worth paying the rental fee.

New to me-

Fright Night(remake) - 8/10, Started out more light hearted than i thought, then got into it. Fun for sure

Hush- 8/10, Really enjoyed how they built tension here, love the lead actress too.

Oddity- 8/10, One of the better jump scares imo, my wife almost fell off the couch.

The Invitation (2015)- 7/10, Slow build of anxiety during a dinner party with a group of old friends.

Significant Other- 7.5/10, a few twists and turns as a young couple go backpacking in the woods. really enjoyed this and didn't expect a few of the twists.

Apartment 7A- 6/10, First semi dud of the month. Julia Garner is great in it, but the story overall is meh.

What You Wish For-7/10 - Nick Stahl really has changed his look. Enjoyed this chefy, rich people dinner flick, but yeah it get depraved.

Deathgasm- 7.5/10, Heavy metal meets demons. Fun old school type of gore-horror/comedy with practical effects. Enjoyed it.

The Nun II- 7/10, Enjoyed it more than the first one and i liked that one too. Enjoyed the characters and The Nun is just creepy imo

The of House of the Devil- 5/10, College girl that needs money takes up a babysitting gig in a creepy house, but nothing really happens until the end. Set in the early 80s, and they captured that well, even filming-wise. Lot's of zooms and long shots, that said, it was pretty meh.

Malignant- (2021) 7.5/10, If movies were races, The House of The Devil is a turtle race and Malignant is an F1 race. Lights out and away we go! The lead is plagued by dreams of people being killed...but they end up actually being dead the next day. I thought it was well done for what it did and how they tied it together.

Session 9, 7.5/10, An asbestos removal team takes a job at old insane asylum. Liked the slow build into everyone potentially losing it and them not trusting each other, really liked the ending.

The Endless, 7.5/10, Two brothers journey to a cult camp that they were at years ago. Thought it was well done and built to a good ending. Mixed in a little sci-fi which is always nice imo

Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse, 7.5/10, Very fun zom-com... Shawn of the Dead meets Superbad. This will definitely go in the rewatch routine

Mother!, 7/10, Jennifer Lawrence and the dude from no Country for Old Men start having house guest arrive at their house. It's filmed in a different way, lots of following around and camera turns from front to back, if that makes sense. We enjoyed it, but it does pump up the anxiety a bit of just not being in control. My wife texted my this morning saying it gave her nightmares lol

Rewatches-

Evil Dead Rise
Shawn of the Dead
The Thing
It Follows
Van Hellsing
Mama
Hereditary
Terrifier
Midsommer

Mother. It was really weird and tense I had no idea what was going on. Later I read it’s an allegory for Mother Earth and overpopulation / pollution or something

The Wailing

Korean filmmakers just love their screaming, don't they? Too long, did not like.
I've had this in my list for a while now. I remember last time turning it on and thinking it was not a night I could do 2.5 hrs. Still on the watch list as it ranked 67 on the horror countdown but I always seem to find something else to watch instead.

One made for kids that is live action is Monster Squad.

One not made for kids that has horror elements without really being scary is the original Beetlejuice.

And learn from me. I once played the original Paranormal Activity during the daytime when watching my nephews and nieces. I thought it was safe because it was only rated R due to language, but it really freaked out my 10 year old niece to where she couldn't sleep alone for a week
Mission accomplished then.

My kid has seen Beetlejuice, and hated it (not because it's scary). He has requested scary, so I'm trying to deliver!
Understandable. I'll be mentioning this momentarily in my 31 for 31 List, but one that is scary but PG-13 and likely appropriate for a 9 year old is Signs. Saw it again this weekend on Max
I was also thinking some M.Night movies could work too.

The Visit scared me as well.
YATZEEE!!!!!!

This is a great suggestion.

But I think Nicks kid wants to be really scared.

So when he does not have his friends over throw him into the deep end Nick.

Halloween.

I watched Signs (Max) for the first time since it was in the theaters. It’s interesting how little we see the aliens… I wonder if the effects weren’t what they wanted them to be or if it was intentional to keep the tension. Good acting across the board, even the kids. 2 times is probably enough for this one.

The Orphanage last night, ranked #120 on the horror countdown. This was one I thought I might have already seen but luckily that was not true. I really enjoyed it, leans more towards a thriller, but as produced by Guillermo del Toro, it has his fingerprints all over it, including the ending. A-

Started watching Legend of Hill House with my wife, 6 episodes in. Really good so far, hope the payoff is good .
Viking Wolf- Swedish take on werewolves. Low budget special effects and a story you've seen many times before but still kinda liked it.
Escape Room- This was better than expected. Kind of like Cube but with group puzzles
Legend of Hill House - now through 8 episodes and it's getting even better
Was going to watch Escape Room2 but couldn't find a free option.
4) The Menu- really good slow burn with great performances by Fiennes and AT-J. More thriller than horror but classified as a comedy. 7/10
5) Blood Red Sky- A Netflix original so wasn't expecting much, turned out to be pretty good. Other than the kid the acting was good and better than expected effects. Probably 20-30 minutes too long but worth a watch. 6/10
6) Immaculate - Sweeny is great in this religion based horror movie. Good buildup and really liked the last 30 minutes. 7/10
7) The Purge - had never watched any of the Purge series before watching this. The writing/story was a little weak but thought all the actors did well with what they were given. Expected more violence and there was very little gore. Had a short runtime and kept me entertained but not chomping at the bit to watch the rest of the series. 6/10
8) 28 Weeks Later- had only watched this once, back when it first came out and didn't think much of it. Must have been in a weird mood or something because I really liked it this time. Might've been all the shaky camera work because everything else is top notch. The rage zombies are definitely the scariest version of a zombie but do seem easier to kill. 7.5
9) The Conference - what a pleasant surprise this movie was! Swedish slasher/comedy that was well cast and kept me entertained. Dubbed in English but not too distracting. 7.5
10) Late Night With the Devil- was a bit disappointed with this as it seems to get rave reviews. Was still good with great cinematography ,the 70's setting was well done and enjoyed most of the characters. If you're going with the slow burn in your movie you need to stick the ending and this one didn't for me. It would rank higher in a found footage list than a traditional horror list. 6
11) Ouija Origin of Evil- directed by Mike Flanigan and set in the late 60's. I've liked everything I've seen from him and this is no exception . 6.5
12) The Invitation (2022)-
this starts out feeling like a Lifetime romance flick that slowly turns closer to something like Ready Or Not. Has a solid final girl and a spooky house but not much else . 5

This movie is one of just a handful of perfect 10 movies for me. Very few shows stick the landing as successfully as this one does. I love it.

That Invitation came up when I was looking for the 2016 version. I’m pretty sure I already watched it but wasn’t 100%

Just watched Grave Encounters on Amazon- a found footage movie about a 'ghost hunters' show doing an episode where they spend the night locked up in a deserted mental hospital.. very similar themes as Blair Witch. At times the characters got a little annoying, but I enjoyed it for what it was ,and there were some legit creepy moments and scares. Great movie to watch in the dark this time of year!

It's intentional - like in Jaws, your imagination is scarier than anything. It's a great surround sound movie.

And the aliens are a McMuffin anyway. People spend too much mental energy deconstructing their purpose in the movie. I read somewhere, and I agree, that the movie works better if you imagine them as demons.

Just watched this for first time in a while a couple weeks ago. Mel was so good in this. Always forget how good Mel was since he's been away from the screen for so long.

Signs was great. People get too hung up on judging "the twist" in M. Knight's movies.

I just enjoy them for what they are. 2 hour long twilight zone episodes. I even enjoyed the most recent ones about the concert and the one about the people on the beach.

Except for Lady on the Water or whatever it was called. That one sucked.

I loved Signs. Its my favorite M. Night Shamayalan flick
Mine too, though I'm not overly fond of aliens with the technology to fly trillions of miles through space only to be completely flummoxed at escaping a locked pantry.
They left him behind without attempting a rescue. He was probably "that guy" that every crew has.

"Is everyone accounted for?"
"Jerry's missing."
"Okay... we're outta here!"

Rarely do sequels exceed the original but in the case of Smile 2 we absolutely have one here.

We loved it.

Really well acted. Naomi Scott was simply outstanding. The story was great, my wife and I were totally engaged from the opening credits to the ending credits.

Just a great supernatural, jump scare, and yes some serious gore to boot flick.

4/5 stars. Highly recommend on the big screen too.

V/H/S 2, 7.5/10, Actually surprised I hadn't seen more of this series as I really enjoyed the first one. Love the shorts tied into the main storyline, will defiantly watch more of the series soon.

Lake Mungo, 6.5/10, Really slow FF flick, some decent "spooky" things going on but the middle of the story is very thin and slow. Worth a watch, just make it through the slog in the middle.

V/H/S Viral, 6.5/10, easily third best so far out of the three i've seen. That multiverse one was meh and the skateboard kids went on a bit too long. Also the weakest "wrap around" story of the three.

Okay, I am going to bite the bullet and watch Terrifier. This isn't typically my thing, but I will give it a try.
Okay, I get why people like this franchise. It's cheesy and stupid and it has humor sprinkled throughout. Even the violence and gore has a certain cheekiness to it. I was alternating between laughing and squirming. I'm sure that's what they were going for.

Still, it's a little too much for me.
