So far this month;

New to me-

Fright Night - 8/10, Started out more light hearted than i thought, then got into it. Fun for sure

Hush- 8/10, Really enjoyed how they built tension here, love the lead actress too.

Oddity- 8/10, One of the better jump scares imo, my wife almost fell off the couch.

The Invitation (2015)- 7/10, Slow build of anxiety during a dinner party with a group of old friends.

Significant Other- 7/10, a few twists and turns as a young couple go backpacking in the woods. really enjoyed this and didn't expect a few of the twists.

Apartment 7A- 6/10, First semi dud of the month. Julia Garner is great in it, but the story overall is meh.

What You Wish For-7/10 - Nick Stahl really has changed his look. Enjoyed this chefy, rich people dinner flick, but yeah it get depraved.

Deathgasm- 7/10, Heavy metal meets demons. Fun old school type of gore-horror/comedy with practical effects. Enjoyed it.

The Nun II- 7/10, Enjoyed it more than the first one and i liked that one too. Enjoyed the characters and The Nun is just creepy imo

Rewatches-

Evil Dead Rise
Shawn of the Dead
The Thing
It Follows
Van Hellsing

eff that Yankees game, The of House of the Devil it is.

The of House of the Devil- 5/10, College girl that needs money takes up a babysitting gig in a creepy house, but nothing really happens until the end. Set in the early 80s, and they captured that well, even filming-wise. Lot's of zooms and long shots, that said, it was pretty meh.

The Nun II
#3 in the Conjuring series. Enjoyed it more than the first one and i liked that one too. Enjoyed the characters and The Nun is just creepy imo
Are the first two Conjuring movies 1 and 2, or do you have something else higher?
Sorry I wasn't more clear. I guess it's the 3rd movie in chronological order

Thanks for the link. I was away for a good part of October so didn't do the 31 days thing but I think I'll go through these. I haven't seen a lot of them but did like the first couple of Conjuring movies.

Started watching Legend of Hill House with my wife, 6 episodes in. Really good so far, hope the payoff is good .
Viking Wolf- Swedish take on werewolves. Low budget special effects and a story you've seen many times before but still kinda liked it.
Escape Room- This was better than expected. Kind of like Cube but with group puzzles
Legend of Hill House - now through 8 episodes and it's getting even better
Was going to watch Escape Room2 but couldn't find a free option.
4) The Menu- really good slow burn with great performances by Fiennes and AT-J. More thriller than horror but classified as a comedy. 7/10
5) Blood Red Sky- A Netflix original so wasn't expecting much, turned out to be pretty good. Other than the kid the acting was good and better than expected effects. Probably 20-30 minutes too long but worth a watch. 6/10
6) Immaculate - Sweeny is great in this religion based horror movie. Good buildup and really liked the last 30 minutes. 7/10
7) The Purge - had never watched any of the Purge series before watching this. The writing/story was a little weak but thought all the actors did well with what they were given. Expected more violence and there was very little gore. Had a short runtime and kept me entertained but not chomping at the bit to watch the rest of the series. 6/10
8) 28 Weeks Later- had only watched this once, back when it first came out and didn't think much of it. Must have been in a weird mood or something because I really liked it this time. Might've been all the shaky camera work because everything else is top notch. The rage zombies are definitely the scariest version of a zombie but do seem easier to kill. 7.5
9) The Conference - what a pleasant surprise this movie was! Swedish slasher/comedy that was well cast and kept me entertained. Dubbed in English but not too distracting. 7.5

Gotcha. As posted above, thanks for the link. I watched The Nun last night, and we might try the next one in sequence tonight.

Terrifier 3 was a blast. Over the top gore and they really pushed the boundaries in several scenes. It was a little longer than it needed to be, but the wife and I enjoyed it.

Daddy's Head on Shudder--this one was really creepy and it takes a lot to get to me. It was filmed really well. I don't want to give too much away, but this felt a lot like the Babadook and very much worth the watch. A movie is good when you are discussing it the next day wondering what it meant and that was this one.

I will make sure I see this one

The Lighthouse (Max): 2019, IMDB 7.4. Black and white, just Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson with a few flashes of other people, Two lighthouse tenders are stuck on an island while a storm keeps the ship from coming back, and they stay drunk and lose their marbles. Some fantastical stuff (mermaid, a barnacled tentacled man like in Pirates of the Caribbean), not always clear what's real and what's a vision. Captions required IMO - lots of muttering and old timey sailor talk. It was slow and weird, with an odd ending, but I liked it.

Odd that this came 2 years after Cold Skin, a movie about 2 guys at a lighthouse and some mermaids and everyone going nuts in a storm.

6th - A Nightmare on Elm Street: Dream Warriors (AMC) Grade B
7th - Salem's Lot (2024) (Max) Grade B-

9th - Stephen King's Riding the Bullet (Freevee) Grade D.
10th - What You Wish For (Hulu) Grade B+
11th - Apartment 7A (Paramount +) Grade C
12th - Are You Alone in the House (Prime) Grade F
13th - The Sentinel (Prime) Grade C+
14th - Lifeforce (Prime) Grade D
15th - Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) (AMC+) Grade A
16th - Blackwater Lane (Peacock) Grade C-
17th - The Bird with the Crystal Plumage (Prime) Grade B-

18th - Night of the Creeps (Tubi) One of my all time guilty pleasure movies, going back to when this was in late-night rotation on HBO. This is a blend of alien, zombie, slasher and creepy-crawlie tropes through the twin perspectives of an introverted college kid and a hard-boiled detective. The detective is horror veteran Tom Adkins, who elevates the credibility of this B-movie fare. Interesting side note is that the version on Tubi has a different ending than I had ever seen. Don't come here looking for greatness but if you're a fan of 1980's style midnight movie fare, there is plenty of goodness to be had. I may be biased but I always have fun watching this. Grade B+

I’m excited for Smile 2. The smiles in the trailers don’t look quite as creepy as the first but still looking forward to this movie.
I think this is what the kid and I are seeing on Tuesday instead. I got saved by Terrifier 3 being pushed to a small theater with just one night showing and Smile 2 being new and having day shows.

The Invitation (2015)- 7/10, Slow build of anxiety during a dinner party with a group of old friends.

Significant Other- 7.5/10, a few twists and turns as a young couple go backpacking in the woods. really enjoyed this and didn't expect a few of the twists.

Apartment 7A- 6/10, First semi dud of the month. Julia Garner is great in it, but the story overall is meh.

Malignant- (2021) 7.5/10, If movies were races, The House of The Devil is a turtle race and Malignant is an F1 race. Lights out and away we go! The lead is plagued by dreams of people being killed...but they end up actually being dead the next day. I thought it was well done for what it did and how they tied it together.

Session 9, 7.5/10, An asbestos removal team takes a job at old insane asylum. Liked the slow build into everyone potentially losing it and them not trusting each other, really liked the ending.

The Endless, 7.5/10, Two brothers journey to a cult camp that they were at years ago. Thought it was well done and built to a good ending. Mixed in a little sci-fi which is always nice imo

Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse, 7.5/10, Very fun zom-com... Shawn of the Dead meets Superbad. This will definitely go in the rewatch routine

Malignant is great. It ooozes David Cronenberg influence all over it.

James Wan kicked *** making this flick IMO. I have watched it multiple times already.

Went in opposite directions the last two nights with Carrie (#20 on the countdown) and Deathgasm. Both earned an A- for obviously different reasons. I had seen Carrie before but it has been a long time. It holds up really well despite some prominent 70's styling. Performances are fantastic, making you really care about what happens in the movie. On the other side of the spectrum, I had a ton of fun with Deathgasm. Took me back to the days in high school when my friends and I would watch Evil Dead 2 and Peter' Jackson's Dead Alive on repeat.

I keep hearing about these Terrifier movies. Are they worth seeing?
Hmm...they are gory with lots of blood and the kills are inventive and gruesome at times. You never lose sight that this is just a movie but it can catch you off guard if you go in thinking it's a popcorn flick. Art the Clown is a great addition to Freddy, Michael and Jason and he is the reason these movies work. If you're ok with oddles of splatter and some "holy eff!" kills then dive in, you'll like them.

I watched It Follows - I liked the movie a lot, very creepy and good characters.

It seems like flying to Europe would be a great way to get away from a "Monster" that can only walk slowly towards it's target.
I don't think this particular group of victims had the means to do that. Part of the genius of setting this in the lower-class Detroit area

If your life depended on it, maybe sell your car or something?

Honestly I brought it up more as a joke - most horror movies are going to have a plot hole or two they have to accept,

It's funny how earlier in this thread I had watched unintentionally 3 movies that had Justin Long in them and I asked if he was some kind of "king of horror movies" and then this one had a Justin Long-lite actor in it.

How do we know that It Follows can't just walk to an airport and board a plane? It's invisible to other people, so it could literally just stroll through security with all the gels and liquids it wants.

I think the idea is it can move underwater.

I like the idea I read of trapping it and chaining it to a treadmill. Then you could just keep it in your basement.

Someone also suggested to just live on a cruise. I think I'd rather let the entity take me.

It cant walk under water like Jason and other killers? ;)
It didn't handle a pool all that well.
:bag: forgot about that scene.
What was wrong with that scene? It knew that the pool was a trap so didn’t get in right?

It didn’t seem very sophisticated, but I did think the same thing on a boat.

Since it did have a physical presence (despite non targets being unable to see it) so on a plane it would be getting bumped into a lot.

More that I forgot that happened. Not sure my walking on the ocean floor theory holds up now.

Awesome - 2 of my top horror movies now. Deathgasm has pushed it's way into my main fun horror rotation around the holiday. Shaun of the Dead, Deathgasm, Cabin in the Woods, and Tucker and Dale lead the charge now. I'm glad that it seems to have hit with a few people this month. That was one that I was a bit nervous to see the reactions.
