FFA Official Horror Movie Thread Catching up on Shudder and Various Streaming Platforms (1 Viewer)

So far this month;

New to me-

Fright Night - 8/10, Started out more light hearted than i thought, then got into it. Fun for sure

Hush- 8/10, Really enjoyed how they built tension here, love the lead actress too.

Oddity- 8/10, One of the better jump scares imo, my wife almost fell off the couch.

The Invitation (2015)- 7/10, Slow build of anxiety during a dinner party with a group of old friends.

Significant Other- 7/10, a few twists and turns as a young couple go backpacking in the woods. really enjoyed this and didn't expect a few of the twists.

Rewatches-

Evil Dead Rise
Shawn of the Dead
The Thing

Apartment 7A- 6/10, First semi dud of the month. Julia Garner is great in it, but the story overall is meh.

3 out of 5 stars on Let the Right One In.

Interesting vampire movie. The character development between Oskar and Ely was the soul of the movie.

I enjoyed it.
Strongly agree. Their relationship (not sure that "friendship" is really the right word) takes center stage. Obviously it's a horror movie, but it sometimes doesn't quite feel like one.

In the Mouth of Madness

I'll post more in the DotM thread when I form more thoughts, but the tl:dr is it's an interesting idea and movie, but unfortunately wrapped in the 90s horror movie sheen.

Busy weekend so only got to watch Signs (103 on the Horror top 200) with the teenagers of the house. They really enjoyed it and it has always been one of my favorites as I am a sucker for alien invasion flicks. A-

Last night was Zombieland (74 on the Horror top 200). Very much enjoyed it, a perfect role for Woody Harrelson. As with the FBG list, I would also rank it below the similar Shaun of the Dead as well as Tucker & Dale. B

It a damn good Carpenter flick. Agree on some of the 90’s styling not aging well…..but there is some great creep factor scenes. And I love the story.

Right from the start too. I forget how bad and 90s that opening "cover" of Enter Sandman is .

The Purge: Another I never got around to. Interesting, even if unrealistic, concept that was executed very well. I'm a Ethan Hawke fan and he gave the movie the gravitas it needed to be effective. Not sure if this is true horror or just a thriller but shows up on Peacock with the horror movies.

The Thing: A classic that still holds up well even with outdated special effects. The setting adds to the tension and some real good acting performances.

The Purge series is great FYI. All the movies are good flicks (My two favorites are Anarchy and Election Year) and the tv series (2 seasons) was quite entertaining.

The New Founding Fathers…..scary close to this kinda **** IRL

Longlegs: I went in avoiding as much as I could about the movie knowing not much more than it was a bit like Silence of the Lambs in that it centered around an FBI agent trying to track down a serial killer. I also knew Nic Cage played the titular character. It probably plays more like a thriller than a true horror, but there were some disturbing sequences throughout and the last 30 minutes were quite the ride. I'm still processing it as it's a bit heady for me, but I think I liked it. 3.5/5 with potential to bump up on rewatch.

It isn't even in the same ballpark as Silence of the Lambs. The marketing was better than the movie itself.

Pretty sure he was talking about the plot more so than the quality of the film.

Correct. I should have worded that better. Thanks for the clarification.

And yes, SOTL is 1000x better!

Its Whats Inside Body swap movie involving a group of late 20s friends. It was not very horror-like. Much more comedic. Solidly OK.
I don't know if it was the 6+ beers I drank on Sunday after a day of NFL games, but I just couldn't get into this movie Sunday night. There were too many names to remember and it just was kind of slow. More of a psychological thriller than anything.

Started watching Legend of Hill House with my wife, 6 episodes in. Really good so far, hope the payoff is good .
Viking Wolf- Swedish take on werewolves. Low budget special effects and a story you've seen many times before but still kinda liked it.
Escape Room- This was better than expected. Kind of like Cube but with group puzzles
Legend of Hill House - now through 8 episodes and it's getting even better
Was going to watch Escape Room2 but couldn't find a free option.
4) The Menu- really good slow burn with great performances by Fiennes and AT-J. More thriller than horror but classified as a comedy. 7/10
5) Blood Red Sky- A Netflix original so wasn't expecting much, turned out to be pretty good. Other than the kid the acting was good and better than expected effects. Probably 20-30 minutes too long but worth a watch. 6/10
6) Immaculate - Sweeny is great in this religion based horror movie. Good buildup and really liked the last 30 minutes. 7/10

It's one of the zombie variants of vampire movies, along with 30 Days of Night.
ETA: That's a positive for me - I don't like sexy vampires.

6th - A Nightmare on Elm Street: Dream Warriors (AMC) My first rewatch of the month and my first entry from cable instead of streaming. This has always been my favorite of the Nightmare series for rewatches; maybe not as groundbreaking or scary as the original but a nice callback to it while using better effects, a better cast and a fresh setting. This is also when Freddy really became quite the jokester, for better or worse. Watching this one on cable didn't really take away much from the experience. Still a fun watch. Grade B
Dokken

1st - Immaculate (Hulu) Grade B
2nd - Wind Chill (Tubi) Grade C
3rd - Oddity (AMC+/Shudder) Grade A+
4th - The Wicker Man (1973) (Freevee) Grade B
5th - I Saw the TV Glow (Max) Grade D+
6th - A Nightmare on Elm Street: Dream Warriors (AMC) Grade B
7th - Salem's Lot (2024) (Max) Grade B-
8th - The Deliverance (Netflix) Grade D+
9th - Stephen King's Riding the Bullet (Freevee) Grade D.
10th - What You Wish For (Hulu) Grade B+

11th - Apartment 7A (Paramount +) This prequel to Rosemary's Baby recaptures the setting of the first film very well; 1960's New York is practically just as it was in the original. The main character is nuanced and carries the narrative well. But beyond that, there isn't much. But for some original traits of the protagonist, it's largely a retread of the original, without the gaslighting element that was so crucial. Not awful, not great, its greatest accomplishment is reminding one how great Rosemary's Baby still is. Grade C

12th - Are You Alone in the House (Prime) A stalkerish movie, the flash forward at the beginning tells you what the pivotal event is going to be and then spends the next 2/3 of the movie getting there. The supposed mystery is extremely thinly veiled, diluting it of any drama it could have had. Filmed like a 1970's TV movie on a budget, it lacks any skill or charm in its style. The best thing about this movie is the title. Grade F

I’m finally watching The Evil Dead 81 for the first time.
Man, old flashlights were the worst.
This movie is… irritating. The screaming sound they used for the demons is just awful, and not in a cool creepy way, just in a really annoying way.

The effects blew. Makeup was notably bad too.

The blood in the basement was pretty great, though. I’m not sure it made sense, but that pipe was my favorite scene. Well, and the eyeballs. I forgot that I had read a description of that scene when I was young and it scared me.

It might have been great if I had seen it long ago. With no nostalgia for it, I can’t see watching the sequel.

7th - Salem's Lot (2024) (Max) This is the third version I have seen and the first that isn't a miniseries. As such, it trimmed a lot of the fat from the earlier versions as well as a little bit of meat. Keeping this set in the late 1960's was a wise move, as it gave the film a nice feel and played into some key late scenes. The vampires' appearance wasn't as realistic as I would have liked, though it was in the style of the original. I did like some of the characters, the atmosphere and the pacing, though I thought the ending was rushed. Still worth checking out. Grade B-
I haven't read the book but I think the movie had the story taking place in the mid-70s based on the films that were advertised at the movie theater.

I haven't seen a proper giallo movie to my knowledge, so I did a double feature of:

Blood and Black Lace ('64) + The Bird With the Crystal Plumage ('70)

I dug both of these quite a bit, and just wrote down a handful of others I see on lists as good in the subgenre. I will admit it could be the recent staleness of the more modern slashers that had me embracing the colors and sleaze of these two movies. Blood and Black Lace had me thinking about Black Christmas made a decade later. This is not a subgenre I could marathon, but I might check out a few more this month. I would give both of these solid 7-7.5/10 with room to move in rank as I see more movies from the decade and subgenre.

Watched Strange Darling.

It was almost as good as advertised. Starts a bit slow (talking like the first 5-10 minutes) but then it takes off.
Very interesting twist I wasn't expecting.

3rd - Oddity (AMC+/Shudder) Wow, now this is a must watch. I am very hesitant to mention anything about this film, as I don't want to ruin anything about it at all for anyone. It's got a great story, eerie atmosphere, characters you care about and is scary at all the right times. I fully expect this to be my Number One for horror this month and quite possibly for the year. This and Late Night with the Devil will justify your AMC+ subscription alone. Grade A+
(y)Good movie to add to the October watch list, really enjoyed it and fit my style of horror which is creep and spook. Don't think I would have seen this if not for this rec. Thanks Keith!

Ripped off a couple short old movies last night with:

I Walked With a Zombie ('43)
Quartermass 2 ('57)

I liked both of them for what they were, but more in an intellectually curious way vs. a want to rewatch them or recommend them to others way. I seemed to like Zombie a little better, but that was probably a function of run time. Quartermass had a more interesting concept, but it dragged a bit even with a short run time. Probably around 5/10 for each on my scale.

Now I have all the decades crossed off, I am going to fill in my 31 with a few more newer movies. I still need to watch the 2 Terrifier movies, so I thought I'd do that on my day off Friday. I stumbled on a movie that is an adaptation of another novel by the author of Let the Right One In.

13th - The Sentinel (Prime) This relic from the 1970's must have been a direct ripoff of Rosemary's Baby, despite the lack of a pregnancy angle. It has a loaded cast of supporting players, from Eli Wallach and Burgess Meredith to a very young Christopher Walken and Jeff Goldblum among many others. While it was a lot schlockier than Apartment 7A, at least it was more original in its approach and storyline. YMMV but I found enough here to rate it a little higher. Grade C+

I actually love The Sentinel!!!

My dad took me to this at the tender age of 7 years old...lol. Imagine my eyes lighting up at the orgy scene and gratuitous nudity as well as a young and super hot Beverly DeAngelo getting herself off in front of Alyson Parker.

The neighbors were all great. A freaky premise.....a very spooky story, some scary moments too. I think this is an underrated devil/supernatural/haunted building flick. Burgess Meredith as usual was great.

And that creepy older lesbian roommate of Beverly saying to Alyson "Have a hat and noise maker....for the party". Creepy!!!!

I give it a solid B

What You Wish For - Nick Stahl really has changed his look. Enjoyed this chefy, rich people dinner flick, but yeah it get depraved. 7/10

I'm not familiar with the book or previous films but I thought the new version of Salem's Lot was OK. It's not a classic but was certainly watchable.

There were some early pacing issues due to cramming in a lot of exposition but the movie eventually righted itself to the point of seeming to rush to its conclusion. The spookiness and creatures had a throwback feel to them.

It Follows

Decent enough even if it doesn't all quite come together. Hard to tell is it's paying homage or is simply derivative.

Seems like a move that teenagers would watch during a sleepover.

Really enjoyed this. Didn't hurt parts of this were filmed about 10 minutes from my house.

Thought it brought something new and creative to the genre.
I'm pretty sure they're working on a sequel. News is about a year old, but here's some more info on it.

This movie really does not need a sequel. It was a very well-done, thoughtful, stand-alone film that should stay that way.

I had a chance to add to my list yesterday at the theater but instead saw the Joker sequel. Not horror, just horrible. Consider this a PSA - avoid at all costs
Not being a jerk, but didn't you see any reviews ahead of time? It's been getting hammered.

I did, but I was dead set on seeing a movie at a theater yesterday and the times didn't work out for Speak No Evil or The Substance (I've seen the Danish version of Speak No Evil, so I didn't force this one in; I guess I should have).

I wasn't in the mood for anything too scary or that required much thinking so last night I tried:

Crawl ('19): I get it, there was no mystery what this one was about, but I was still a bit bored. I need a little more humor in a silly monster croc movie. 4/10

Fright Night ('01)
: I saw this one pop up on Peacock and had a hazy memory of being surprised by it when it came out. After a rewatch, I would still say this is worth a look and a surprising modern remake. It's not amazing or anything, but it's a fun comparison to the 80s version. Here Evil is played by McLovin' and he actually had me laughing a bit and is a much better hang than 80s Evil. I also like that Farrell is good here and menacing from the start and I like that they dropped the sidekick thing. I also forgot some of the acting - namely the moms - Toni Collette as Charlie's mom and loved seeing Lisa Loeb as Evil's mom in a brief scene. All that said, I really didn't like Yelchin as Brewster and could not care less about his GF or their relationship, that is a big whiff vs. the 80s version. Tennant was funny, but I also prefer the 80s version of this role and that it was a campy late night host vs. vegas magician. 6/10

ETA: that gets me to 13 on the month. I dropped some of the categories from the list I posted, but I am still going to try to fit these in that outline. I thought a lot of different years/decades, 25% foreign language, and 80% new to me movies sounded like reasonable benchmarks as well to get a variety.

I have the day off today for the concert, so I might knock out the first Terrifier this morning. My son and I are going to a horror movie on the 22nd on our day off. It will either be Terrifier 3 or Smile 2, so my homework before then is watching the first 2 Terrifier movies and do a Smile rewatch.

Deathgasm feels like a great way compliment a day off before a metal concert too, so I might rewatch that yet again instead. Love that damn movie.

Watched this last night based on the recommendations. I full agree that the unique story, atmosphere and characters are great. However, I also felt it was fairly predictable and did not really go anywhere that was unexpected and fell a bit flat for me. I would give it a B+ but prob would not rewatch.

Uhhh, how old is your son? I love the Terrifier movies, one was good, the 2nd was GREAT, but extremely un-child friendly. And I heard the 3rd pushes the boundaries even further as to what may be acceptable to put on screen.

Watched a few movies in October so far
Hulu
What you Wish for which was mentioned in here a few times. I dug it. Very low budgetty, but I'd recommend for a watch anyway. Easy enough and Imogene is easy on the eyes, imho.

Two on Peacock
Hell Fest - cheesy slasher film but pretty decent. Again, I'd recommend, but temper your expectations. It is what it is.
Malignant - I must have missed this one when it came out and don't recall anyone mentioning it either. James Wan movie. Had some very cool effects. Story was borderline ridiculous but there were some tense scenes, some jump scares, and some good gore. I'd rank this one first of the three I watched.

I'm not sure I could go right into Terrifier 3 after just watching the first 2.

He is 18 now and he is the one who has seen the first 2 already and suggested us going. He seemed as interested in Smile 2, so it could very well end up being that.
