FFA Official Horror Movie Thread Catching up on Shudder and Various Streaming Platforms (2 Viewers)

This seems a good place to ask this question. My 9 year old, who hasn't seen a real horror movie, is adamant about hosting a party and watch one with his friends. The hard part is, which movie? He's aware of the slasher/killer movies, which I don't think are quite appropriate, and Shaun of the Dead. I've personally been advocating for Poltergeist. Now I'm starting to wonder if that is even too severe.

Any thoughts on entry level titles?
Tremors
Arachnophobia
This is a great suggestion.

But I think Nicks kid wants to be really scared.

So when he does not have his friends over throw him into the deep end Nick.

Halloween.
Thanks everyone for the suggestions. We decided on a double feature to capture the most kids: Tremors and Poltergeist. Going to have about 10 kids for Tremors, and four will stay for Poltergeist. Will report back on Sunday morning!

Seems pretty big budget compared to some of the others (and I don’t mean all the video effects of the others), but it’s still meh. This one is extraterrestrial-centric. 2.5/5

While they are watching you should hide a couple clown dolls around the house!

I might have saved a few long tree limbs from fall pruning.

23rd = Black Christmas (1974) (Prime) Being really tired after the game, I wanted a rewatch that I wouldn't mind falling asleep to, but it kept me awake by being compelling. Much better than either of the remakes, this sorority house stalker story captures the feel of the 1970s as well as relevant subject matter and subtext. Good pacing and a good cast. It didn't make my Top 75 but it is a worthy entrant in the lower portion of the group's Top 200. Grade B+

Uh oh, Sinister (Max) might be a DNF for me - this is pretty freaky.
Update?
No update - I'm still paused.
Worth a finish imo. It’s very intense and has one of the best jump scares ever. (Not sure that helped me selling you on finishing it lol)
I read something saying based on heart rate monitoring, it's the scariest movie ever tested.
It's a really good movie. Highly recommend.

Terrifier 3

This is what I had thought the 2 was going to be more like. I ended up liking it more than 2, and my son was the opposite. IMO it had a better balance of the tone I liked. The opener was messed up and great and then there was a scene at a bar that was funny. There were actual scares too. It also was lacking a couple things I didn't like about 2 - Jonathan (in it, but much less so) and the pale girl (I liked the look of her, but not the humor - Art provides enough "jokes" ). The gore is ramped up and looked better. For example, I think the bedroom scene went on too long and was lit in a way that the warts and rubber started showing a bit. I didn't have that complaint here, or at least wasn't as bored with lore bog down to notice as much.

To me these movies are the best when it's more of "mistaken identity" and people are unknowingly messing with Art or just interacting with him like he is a crazy but harmless clown - pizza diner, costume shop, and bar scene. If I could get a movie that is mostly that as he stalks Sienna, that would be a 10/10 movie for me. As it is, this one is closer to 1 than the sequel was. - more a 6.5/10 to the first's 7.5/10. There was one specific scene I could have done without that dropped in down a tick, and despite the run time, I am convinced there is a 10-15 scene missing at the end and it felt weird. No spoilers here, but anybody interested and has seen it can shoot a PM - I am curious if I missed something.

To be clear, I am not sure how excited I would be to watch these again and they are for those with a strong stomach.

Open 24 Hours - A woman takes a graveyard shift job at a gas station. She was diagnosed as paranoid delusional, and had set her serial killer ex-boyfriend on fire at some point in the past. The movie uses her delusions to create cheap jump scares and tension. It gets crazy at the end. I guess it was worth a watch. 5/10

Also true to form I lost track of where I was for the month and what I watched. Watching all 3 of those Terrifiers in short order probably did some damage.

I have 18 written down, but I also pushed out a lot of rewatches this last week for a break between Terrifiers. I had a mild plan to watch the Hannibal Lector series since we decided Silence of the Lambs was horror, but Red Dragon wasn't as good as I remember. I forgot that both Shaun of the Dead and Snyder's Dawn of the Dead came out in '04, so I did a double feature of those. I also rewatched Deathgasm as people talked about it. A Craven double feature of Serpent and the Rainbow and People Under the Stairs completed as well. I am pretty sure I am at 24 on the month with all that, but I also think I forgot something else I watched. Hmmm.

Saw The Substance in the theater couple weeks ago. Holy **** that's a wild movie.

Also been rewatching tons of classic giallo on Tubi.
Anything that stood out that you'd recommend?

The first one that comes to mind is one I hadn't seen before: Mario Bava's A Bay of Blood. Pretty great if you like giallo. Some good kills, and one of the most insane endings you'll see in a movie.
BTW - good to see you in here, gb. Hope all is well.

Thanks for the recommend. It looks like that is on Prime/Shudder so I will bump that up. I also wanted to get to Deep Red soon since I seem to see that at or near the top of most lists.

Just finished X after watching Pearl first. I know it was out of order but I'm not sure if it would have made a difference. I liked Pearl quite a bit more and was hoping X would have been more of a psychological study like Pearl was, instead of a slasher. I know Maxxxine is getting bad reviews but I'll still finish off the trilogy.

I trapped the Devil - This is more up my alley, it's creepy, filmed dark, and is smarter than a 5th grader(in a good way). Being only 82 mins. it fits nicely into an evening watch after a long day. The story is interesting and with just a few characters it doesn't waste time getting going and for me I was drawn in from the start. A good watch, imo.

Eden Lake - very intense movie. I remember reading a few times in here or the count down thread that the ending was a gut punch and that’s surely the case. Definitely worth watching but probably only once.

Not a movie but I watched the first episode of Hysteria! on Peacock.

I can already tell it's going to be watchable but not great. It looks 80's and the soundtrack is in my wheelhouse but the teenagers don't act and talk 80's. We literally never said "literally" and nobody was categorizing anything as a "hate crime".

Julie Bowen has had work done but still looks great though

One of the things I really like about X/Pearl is that you can watch them in either order and it will totally "work." Of course, they were made with that in mind, but still.

The Substance - Well that was something. Still processing all of it so it's tough to give a grade yet but overall positive. Demi Moore is fantastic, might need a rewatch.
What we do in the Shadows - Love the tv show so I decided to check out the original movie and it did not disappoint. I probably prefer some of the tv characters better but as a fan, it's a must watch. A-

24th - Mercy (Peacock) Based loosely on "Gramma", a Stephen King short story in Skeleton Crew. The story stuck with me since I read it decades ago, which is why I checked this out. This has a good cast, albeit playing typecast roles. There was enough here to keep me interested until the third act, where the story really fell apart, which shouldn't be a surprise when it comes to movies based on short stories. If you're a King completist, it's worth checking out; otherwise, it's neither must-watch nor must avoid. Grade C

I've watched a few double features this month:

As Above So Below / The Descent - the underground, tight space claustrophobia is great in these two

Ready or Not / You're Next

Texas Chainsaw Massacre (Original and Jessica Biel remake) -
R Lee Ermey is fantastic as sheriff

Next up is:

Hell House LLC / Houses October Built - i hate the ****ing clowns in Hell House

25th - The Corpse Vanishes (TCM) My first classic era film this month, this came out in 1942 and stars Bela Legosi. An interesting premise, where young brides are dying at their weddings and their bodies are stolen soon after. This has a lot of tropes common to the era, like a mad doctor, freakish henchmen and an isolated castle. A clear step or two behind the legends like Dracula or Frankenstein, I still appreciated the essence of the film and liked the would-be heroine, a reporter trying to unravel the mystery. Grade B-

My parents put me in front of The Exorcist at around that age and while it traumatized me for a weekend, it also sparked a lifelong love of the genre.
Watched it with my son the other night. First time he had seen it, and his assessment was "it was boring." Little punk.

I would think many would struggle with pacing of 70s movies if they aren't used to that.

Definitely a slow build so maybe it's the ADD that's so common to his generation.

You burn through a ton of movies too. Do you do double features?

You didn't ask me, but I tend to do this a bit if I know I can get through 2. For me it's all about if they are good or not, it doesn't matter if they are the same or really different. Sometimes I do two quite similar like the above, but I am more likely to do 2 by a director/actor, by what I think the tones of the movies are, or just by a general tie in like "vampires". Speaking of, I am going to take @Tick 's suggestion and watch Tusk. I am going to start watching the Robert Eggers movies as I ramp up to Nosferatu, so I was planning a double feature with The Lighthouse.

I'll do double features, especially this time of year, but not of too similar subject matter. I'll double up on horror (or comedy, etc) but not found footage, zombies, etc. When that specific, I'll do my best to fully digest the previous movie before starting the next one.

Same for series; I will wait at least one day before moving on to the next episode. My wife hates that, as she is a Binger while I am a digester

No One Will Save You - As mentioned with Signs, I am a sucker for alien invasion movies. This one has quite a few unique aspects to it as well as a story that goes beyond the invasion aspect along with an interesting ending which I very much enjoyed.

The VVitch only gets better the more I watch it. Nothing else, the attention to detail and the fact this was Eggers' debut is worth the watch. If I was running a horror studio I would just give Aster and Eggers all the $. To me this is a 10/10 horror movie.

It looks like Tusk got to my library, so I will pick that up and watch it this weekend.

To be honest, when I pair movies I don't always watch them in one sitting. Most often it's just back to back nights, as I fall asleep early.

26th - Daddy's Head (AMC+) Saw this based on a recommendation upthread. This one took time to build the core characters, and then wow! This one was certainly unique yet kind of an amalgamation of The Babadook and Under the Skin with a dash of The VVitch. Not everything is thoroughly explained, which is a good thing. I honestly wish this had a different title, but if that's my primary criticism, it's one that can easily be overlooked. This one would be great on Halloween night. Grade A-
