FFA Official Horror Movie Thread Catching up on Shudder and Various Streaming Platforms (8 Viewers)

Whew...Eden Lake is a tough watch. Not sure what genre it would fit into. Is it horror? It's definitely a horrible situation.
Either way, besides the fact that the couple made some questionable decisions, it's an intense ride and an endless gut punch.

Saw The Substance in the theater couple weeks ago. Holy **** that's a wild movie.

Also been rewatching tons of classic giallo on Tubi.
Anything that stood out that you'd recommend?

The first one that comes to mind is one I hadn't seen before: Mario Bava's A Bay of Blood. Pretty great if you like giallo. Some good kills, and one of the most insane endings you'll see in a movie.
BTW - good to see you in here, gb. Hope all is well.

Thanks for the recommend. It looks like that is on Prime/Shudder so I will bump that up. I also wanted to get to Deep Red soon since I seem to see that at or near the top of most lists.

I'm a big fan of Argento's Deep Red and Tenebrae. Enjoy!

Putting on MadS tonight

This was absolutely WILD.

Defiantly getting baked next time for a rewatch.

Nobody else bit when I posted about this the other day. It’s an amazing hidden gem.

The combination of…

the characters slowly turning into zombies while at the same time being on drugs and having bad trips works SO well with the one shot camera gimmick. The resulting feeling of paranoia makes it absolutely nightmarish as a viewer. Exactly what you want from a horror flick.

Agreed. It will be a great rewatch too because of the way it's filmed.

I LOVEd some of the "lull" points too. Being on hold while racing home to get the alarm

Also loved the slow roll out of them being zombies. You're unsure whats going on at first besides a bad trip on the drugs.

ETA; if you want to play a drinking game during this; take a shot every time you see the cameraman's shadow

ETA2: don’t watch the trailer

I need to see Daddy's Head it sounds like

It was ok. I’d watch it, don’t think it deserves the praise it’s been getting though. I’d probably give it a B / B-
Just got done watching so this is first impressions but man, it had some good creep factor in it and most of it was because we cared for the characters, imo. I agree it wasnt a perfect 10 so B+ sounds right. Definitely a watch for any who haven't seen it before and like their horror set at scare rather than gore. Good atmosphere and nice filming added to a solid script to bring out some chilling vibes. Similar to Oddity in level and feel, imo.

Yeah I think that’s a fair assessment, mainly I didn’t care for the ending

29th - Sting (Hulu) A creature feature about an alien spider that grows quickly in an apartment building. The opening scene gives a lot away, but after that, it's a good little movie. Touches of humor but not really a comedy, and it has family drama as well, but not too much. There isn't that much originality going on here but what it does, it does well. Maybe not one to go out of your way for but I enjoyed well enough. Grade B-

That leaves a double feature for tonight to get me to 31. Thinking the wife will pick a new (to us) one and I'll follow that up with a rewatch; most likely the original Halloween.

This sounds awesome, pics?

hey todem since tim is apparently devoid of taste and left smokey and the bandit off his list intentionally can you put it on your list in memory of the late great burt reynolds and jackie gleason who when paired form one of the most formiddable thespian powerhouses ever assembled they are basically the voltron of 70s movie awesomeness take that to the bank brochacho

I like Oddity a lot more than Caveat. Maybe I should have watched Caveat first. It’s weak and the twist was kind of obvious imo.

Frankie Freako - Temu Joel McHale is…I don’t know just weird and summons some Freakos (little goblins) and hijinks ensue
It’s like Troma level quality but some cool effects

30th - Little Monsters (Hulu) The premise for this one is a zombie attack at a field trip for schoolkids at a theme farm and features Lupita Nyong'o. Don't be fooled by the premise though - this is very much a Rated R zombie movie, albeit with a good amount of comedy and more than a little sentimentality. Although not quite what I was looking for on Halloween night, I can't deny its entertainment value. For a horror comedy, it's actually quite good at both aspects. Grade B

31st - Halloween (AMC+) The legend on the night of its namesake. I would imagine everyone reading this is very familiar with John Carpenter's masterpiece. What stood out to me specifically on this rewatch was that the pacing wasn't as slow as I had remembered. True, there's some time getting to Halloween night but the things that happened during the day were eerie and definitely build anticipation. Needless to say, this gets a... Grade A+

I thought the male lead in this was a shockingly bad actor. The kids were more convincing. Fun movie, Nyong'o was great. It's weird to see where this is in her filmography - I assumed I'd look it up and find it was her first movie or something, but this was post-Black Panther.

Final List

New to me-

Fright Night(remake) - 8/10, Started out more light hearted than i thought, then got into it. Fun for sure

Hush- 8/10, Really enjoyed how they built tension here, love the lead actress too.

Oddity- 8/10, One of the better jump scares imo, my wife almost fell off the couch.

The Invitation (2015)- 7/10, Slow build of anxiety during a dinner party with a group of old friends.

Significant Other- 7.5/10, a few twists and turns as a young couple go backpacking in the woods. really enjoyed this and didn't expect a few of the twists.

Apartment 7A- 6/10, First semi dud of the month. Julia Garner is great in it, but the story overall is meh.

What You Wish For-7/10 - Nick Stahl really has changed his look. Enjoyed this chefy, rich people dinner flick, but yeah it get depraved.

Deathgasm- 7.5/10, Heavy metal meets demons. Fun old school type of gore-horror/comedy with practical effects. Enjoyed it.

The Nun II- 7/10, Enjoyed it more than the first one and i liked that one too. Enjoyed the characters and The Nun is just creepy imo

The of House of the Devil- 5/10, College girl that needs money takes up a babysitting gig in a creepy house, but nothing really happens until the end. Set in the early 80s, and they captured that well, even filming-wise. Lot's of zooms and long shots, that said, it was pretty meh.

Malignant- (2021) 7.5/10, If movies were races, The House of The Devil is a turtle race and Malignant is an F1 race. Lights out and away we go! The lead is plagued by dreams of people being killed...but they end up actually being dead the next day. I thought it was well done for what it did and how they tied it together.

Session 9, 7.5/10, An asbestos removal team takes a job at old insane asylum. Liked the slow build into everyone potentially losing it and them not trusting each other, really liked the ending.

The Endless, 7.5/10, Two brothers journey to a cult camp that they were at years ago. Thought it was well done and built to a good ending. Mixed in a little sci-fi which is always nice imo

Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse, 7.5/10, Very fun zom-com... Shawn of the Dead meets Superbad. This will definitely go in the rewatch routine

Mother!, 7/10, Jennifer Lawrence and the dude from no Country for Old Men start having house guest arrive at their house. It's filmed in a different way, lots of following around and camera turns from front to back, if that makes sense. We enjoyed it, but it does pump up the anxiety a bit of just not being in control. My wife texted my this morning saying it gave her nightmares lol

V/H/S 2, 7.5/10, Actually surprised I hadn't seen more of this series as I really enjoyed the first one. Love the shorts tied into the main storyline, will defiantly watch more of the series soon.

Lake Mungo, 6.5/10, Really slow FF flick, some decent "spooky" things going on but the middle of the story is very thin and slow. Worth a watch, just make it through the slog in the middle.

V/H/S Viral, 6.5/10, easily third best so far out of the three i've seen. That multiverse one was meh and the skateboard kids went on a bit too long. Also the weakest "wrap around" story of the three.

As Above So Below, 8/10, Finally got around to watching this as it was recommended for The Decent fans and it did not disappoint. Very well done and you get the same claustrophobic feel as The Descent.

Anything For Jackson, 8/10, An elderly couple try to bring back their grandson from the dead. Really like the couple, they were very good imo and you kind of feel for them as they lose control of what they were trying to do.

You're Next, 8/10, One of the baddest *** final girls ever imo. Fun home invader movie with some nice kills

The Blackcoat's Daughter, 6/10 - I liked where this one started out and the middle was good, but didn't like the way they finished it off. Well done and very stabby, but for the most part it was just ok.

The Devil's Backbone, 7.5/10- Love del Torro, so this has been on my list for a while and i finally got around to it. A little Lord of the Flies-like as it's a bunch of boys who end up trying to escape a hold during the Spanish War. Wasn't as much horror as I expected, but it gets intense and is well done. Kid acting was good too

Daddy's Head, 8.5/10- Really enjoyed this one, it got a few gasps from me that most movies don't. Loved the setting of this too, thought it was pretty original and still didn't go down the road i expected. Thanks @Keith R

MadS, 8.5/10- Wild, wild ride! Do not watch the trailer before going in imo, but it is in French and subtitled. A night out partying escalates as some kids try out a new drug. It's told in one continuous shot which was neat. I really enjoyed that acting and the continuous shot makes you focus on what's going on as you figure things out along with the characters.

The House at the End of Time, 7/10- Spanish haunted house flick that did a very good job of mixing in time travel.

Ouija: Origin of Evil, 7.5/10- I would have never watched this without a recommendation, glad i did. Thought it was very creepy and one character in particular was very well done.

The Substance, 7.5/10- A past-her-prime TV star tries a new substance to make herself look younger. This was fun, different and lots of ladies doing aerobics in tights...like A LOT lol. Also, WTHECK was that third act? :lmao: it went completely off the rails in a wild way. A little long, but worth it.

Rewatches-

Evil Dead Rise
Shawn of the Dead
The Thing
It Follows
Van Hellsing
Mama
Hereditary
Terrifier
Midsommer 🐻
V/H/S
The Ritual
The Witch
The Hand (1981) 👋
Silent Hill
The Shinning

Ichi the Killer was pretty crazy but ultimately pointless, imo. Unless extreme violence, blood and gore was the point then I guess it succeeded.

I had meant to do this sooner, but better late than never. My final list

19th - The Stuff (AMC+). Grade C+.
20th - MaXXXine (Max) Grade C-

28th - Caveat (AMC+) Grade B-
29th - Sting (Hulu) Grade B-
30th - Little Monsters (Hulu) Grade B
31st - Halloween (AMC+) Grade A+

Champion of the Month - Oddity (on AMC+). Grade A+. In my opinion, this one was practically perfectly done, from originality to characters and story to pacing, and it earned the scares it produced. I remain blown away by this over a month later.

Surprise of the Month - Host (on AMC+). Grade B+. I saw Oddity based on an online recommendation and Daddy's Head because of @Courtjester 's post, but this one came out of nowhere. A found footage gem that really surprised me.

Rewatch of the Month - Invasion of the Body Snatchers (on AMC+). Grade A. I technically rated Signs and Halloween higher, but am much less familiar with this 1970s legend. A film that has so much depth. Truly a product of its era yet with a message that really resonates today.

Theater Watch of the Month - none. I couldn't get to see The Substance, had already seen the Danish version of Speak No Evil and wasn't motivated enough to check out any of the sequels.

Trash of the Month - Are You Alone in the House (on Prime). Grade F. The best thing about this is the title.

Disappointment of the Month - I Saw the TV Glow (on Max). Grade D+. The grade for this may be harsh, but I had high hopes for an A24 horror film and this was not scary at all. This may be a better general movie than a horror movie, but given the mindset I was in when I saw it, I was really let down.

Streamer/Network of the Month - AMC+/Shudder. All my top awards went to AMC+ films, plus it has the great Daddy's Head, Late Night with the Devil (which I saw twice earlier this year) and a cavalcade of classics, indies and foreign films. Worthy of special recognition.

Watched these over the last few days

The Substance - pretty bonkers, love that a lot of it is old school effects not CGI

You’re Next - enjoyed this one as well, these home invasion type horror films are always the scariest to me just because they exist in the realm of possibility

Blink Twice - didn’t really care for this one, a little too much social commentary for me

I finished Maxxxine (Max). I liked the background stuff from the era (Scout and RX-7 on the road, Tab in the fridge, etc.). Mia Goth was good. The movie... it was pretty straightforward. I think everyone probably knew who the bad guy would be, and while there was a pretty grisly scene on a staircase, there wasn't much/any suspense. It was more like watching the Dan Akroyd Dragnet or something. It was well made and was fine overall, but nothing special.

I watched It Comes at Night (Max). Good cast (Edgerton, Riley Keough, the guy from Possessor), but jeez this was a dismal movie. Just dreary from start to finish, with it taking sadder turns any chance it had, without even asking any interesting questions. Ugh, sorry I watched this.

Finally got around to watching The Descent. I hesitated because of my claustrophobia. 5 minutes into the cave and I had to turn it off when the one woman got stuck. I went back to it the next day and there weren't any real issues after that. I had no idea what the movie was about so was surprised by it all. Not bad. Kept the tension throughout and some cool fx. There's actually an alternative ending that you can find. Apparently they thought the UK version was too dark for a US audience.

Cube (1997) had an interesting premise but the horrible acting and lack of explanation about the what and why of it all held it back. Still, entertaining enough. I see there's a Japanese remake in 2021 but I won't be watching it.

I watched Cube multiple times over the years and like the enclosed prison environment and the sometimes gnarly kills. The no explanation thing works for me cuz we are put right into the thick of things like the characters, with no rhyme or reason for our situation. There a a few sequels and they try to aid in the backstory but each movie gets progressively worse wit the last one I saw looking like it was filmed in a garage for $40. Not worth the effort to keep going with them, imo.

I could be interested in a reboot however, if done right. It's a ripe story for one.

I'd be all over a Japanese remake of Cube. It's a cool "concept" movie.

Have at it. It's on Prime...report back.

I watched the Salem’s Lot remake. I wasn’t overly impressed with it, but it wasn’t the worst thing I’ve ever seen. Meh. 2.5/5

I almost gave up on Malignant but I guess I'm glad I stuck it out. Craziness at the end made up for a fairly generic horror movie with too much cgi. Still doesn't mean the movie was very good but at least it wasn't all bad. Not recommended.
