FFA Official Horror Movie Thread Catching up on Shudder and Various Streaming Platforms (4 Viewers)

Headed to see Don't Breathe tonight, expecting to like it a lot.

@Scoresman, for those of us who aren't fans of gratuitous violence (Green Room ok, Bone Tomahawk ok, Hostel no bueno), which of the movies from your list would you recommend first?
From that list? Behind the Mask or Monsters probably, maybe Them too.  Santa Sangre if avant garde is your thing and you want to check out what many consider a classic in that subgenre.

It's a shame though because Martyrs and Audition are by far the standouts from what I watched over the weekend, but have a lot of gruesome violence.

I don't mind violence per se, it's just the kind of violence where like half the movie is a victim being slowly tortured.  Bone Tomahawk had a really violent, gruesome scene but I was cool with that as it fit the movie

You will not like Martyrs then, especially the last half.  Audition you may enjoy but you'll need to look away for a good 10 minutes off and on at some point.

Wife was out of town all weekend, which allowed me to greatly reduce my queue.  Everything below is on Amazon streaming, some require the Shudder add-on, which I highly recommend.

Audition - Finally watched this classic about a widower who holds an audition to find a girlfriend.  It starts out like a sweet romantic comedy until you get to really know the lady he chooses to court.  This really is a masterful horror film.  The wonderful acting and character development of the film's first half makes the payoff at the end so much more gruesome and terrifying.   Japanese with subtitles.

Martyrs - A young woman's hunt for revenge against people who kidnapped and abused her as a child leads her and a friend on a terrifying journey.  Wow, I have no idea how to review this movie.  The action starts out immediately with a bang and never really lets go.   By the end, the movie takes you in a direction you could never imagine.  The movie is so violent it can almost be categorized as "torture porn" but it is so much deeper than that at the same time.  I came away from the movie feeling sadness for the protagonist as well as anger over the way the antagonists were so detached from what they were doing.  Either way, its a rare horror movie that affects you like this after viewing.  You may not be able to finish watching this one, or it may just piss you off, but either way, I highly recommend giving it a shot.  It's in French, but subtitled.

Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon - Imagine that being a serial killer in a slasher movie was an actual career.  Now imagine a documentary crew following an apprentice "slasher" around as he plans his first killing spree and you have this movie.  It's a horror comedy that works really real and is very cleverly made.  It's hilarious watching the young killer dissect every cliche from slasher movies into something that is intricately planned as part of the "script".  The last half of the movie also takes a twist that is very well done.  Horror legends Zelda Rubenstein and Robert Englund make appearances.
Very nice - 3 of my favorites from the last decade or so!

Agree that Martyrs is one of "those" movies that you see on lists of hardest movies to watch, and deservedly so.  It is probably one of the goriest and hardest movies to watch that I have encountered.  That said, I really loved the concept of what was going on with the movie.  There is definitely a plot and an interesting idea there.

Audition is a movie that might cure somebody of their attraction to Asian women.  ;)   I always make sure to reinforce to people to get through that initial 30 mins or so.  Like you said, the first part plays like a rom-com, but it makes the payoff that much better at the end.

Behind the Mask was on my list of favs of the 00s.  Such a good horror movie, and anyone who liked stuff like Scream needs to check it out.

I did like others on your list too.  You seemed to like Monsters (don't bother with the sequel), have you ever seen The Host? Well done "monster" movie from the director of Snowpiercer. Just barely missed my top 100.

Just added it to my queue, thanks!  Creature features and monster movies are not my favorite genre, but I've really been taking a liking to foreign made horror recently.

One of my favorites.  I've been pimping this one awhile.  Wish they made more creature features like this.

Don't Breathe was awesome.  Super suspenseful and I thought pretty well paced and acted.  The old dude had a terrific physical presence that made me believe he could really do the ###-kicking he was doing.

That actor has to be on HGH.

Not sure how many you have watched, but if you just started on the foreign horror, here are ones I would rate highly:

The Orphanage

A Tale of Two Sisters

[Rec]

Let the Right One In

Dead Snow (sequel is also good)

The Vanishing

High Tension

Inside

Frontiers

The Eye

Pulse

Battle Royale

Thanks.  I've seen [Rec], Let the Right one In, and Inside, all fantastic.  Will check out the others.  Another one I liked that came out this year is Baskin.

This evening I will be watching what is supposedly one the most controversial and disgusting movies ever made.

1979's Canibal Holocaust - Uncut blue ray remaster.

So wish me luck.

One of the few movies I had to turn away from a few scenes.  I did not like this movie in hindsight.  The way the director treated the natives as well as the real animal cruelty just makes me think he's a despicable, sadistic dude and left a sour note on the whole thing.

Also, it has to battle with A Serbian Film for the title of most disturbing ever.

Yeah I  remember years ago ordering the uncut Cannibal Holocaust and paying way too much for it because it was supposedly banned.

I watched it once and that simply was enough. I love love love gory movies but this movie was over the top. Even though it's been years since I've seen it, the movie darkens my shelf gathering dust, I can still relive moments from that movie in my mind. Some things cannot be unseen.

BTW I really liked Monsters. The Mexico settng really gave it a gritty feel and I just liked the concept all around.

Part 2 was okay but nothing special.

Paid 19.99 for it....and am prepared to be sickened.

I believe Cannibal Holocaust was the first of the " found footage " movies that Blair Witch and others would replicate.

And yes...love Audition...starts slow but the last 30 minutes are almost unwatchable (in good way).

Saw Don't Breath as well...really good movie, top notch stuff, glad to see it making money.

Damn, I really need to make time to watch this movie.

So we watched Cannibal Holocaust. Uncut. First fall the blue ray transfer was fantastic. For such an old low budget film it was pretty remarkable. The audio was also excellent. I used my Sony Golds as I watched this in my den on my PS4.

Let me just preface this by saying after I had finished the film I felt really disgusted and ashamed I actually watched this. The film is an awful exploitation movie of the highest order. Horrendous animal cruelty that simply disgusted me to no end. I could not believe I was watching some of these scenes. Just too many liberties were taken with rape, animal cruelty and some other unspeakable horrors. This film was exactly as advertised. As bad as it was......I could not stop watching.

The acting was extremely bad. So much so I laughed in pure b flick joy. I felt the first half of the film was actually far better than when they actually found the footage. And you found yourself rooting for the Cannibals after seeing the disgusting liberties the 4 film crew people took as they went into the Green Inferno in search for the Tree People tribe.

It is a must see film if you are a hardcore gore, low budget horror buff. It is a shocking and tragic film and the sound track is pretty damn amazing (and perfectly transports you back to 1979).

2.5 out of 4 stars.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I watched a pirated version of Cannibal Holocaust and I'm ok conscious-wise not giving any money to that kind of venture.

Anyway, new stuff I watched on Amazon streaming.

Dagon - A group of rich douchbags shipwreck near an Italian town devoted to worshiping a lovecraftian beast.  This one would've been way better if it had a budget higher than a typical sci-fi channel movie.  Great concept, but most of the effects were lame and the acting was porno level bad.

The Orphanage - A woman and her husband purchase the orphanage she grew up in and strange stuff starts happening.  Kind of a lame description but this is a terrific ghost story with some great acting and great directing.  You might shed a tear at the ending which is rare for horror.

Love, love ,love this movie.  The tension, the spooks, the drama, the great acting and a novel story.  I watched this on my pc at home, all alone, at 10:00pm with the lights out and headphones on.

The hide and seek scene left me breathless with dread.  If I were a kid I would have covered one eye while watching.

never seen it.. not really sure I want to either

I can watch most gore movies but animal cruelty is kinda iffy

I watched "Baskin" again over the weekend and I think it might be my favorite horror movie of this year. It starts off a bit slow but once it gets going wow... some really brutal and intense scenes.  If you are a fan of Hellraiser you must check this out.

Glad you like the Orphanage.  The one other one sounds interesting, but I think I will pass on the porno level production.

We Need to talk about Kevin - A mom struggles to find her life again after her evil teenage son shoots up his school.  This isn't really horror but I saw it on Shudder and heard good things so I gave it a shot.  This is a VERY depressing and unsettling movie. The acting is fantastic, especially Tilda Swinton as the mom.  The sense of hopelessness she gives off is amazingly well done.  The various kids playing the son were good too although I had a hard time believing a kid could be so evil and hating of his mom at such a young age.  This kid gives Damien from The Omen a run for his money.  This is a great movie, just dont watch it if you're already depressed.

Good write up... I love this movie

Mum & Dad - Amazon (Shudder) - A British indie about a girl who goes to her co-worker's house and meets her mum and dad.  Not a typical British family as you can probably guess.  This one is great all around.  Characters, acting, humor, lots of tension, and the grotesqueness is off the charts.  Seriously, it has stuff such as

a guy using severed body parts as a fleshlight and you can see the semen dripping out
and

a bloody dead guy hanging on a wall as a Christmas decoration with his ##### nailed to his thigh
.  Best part about the movie is how they manage to mix the humor and tension with just the right amounts of each.

Shows as "unavailable" on Amazon. ???

Yeah, it's available through Shudder.  There's a lot of good stuff on Shudder.  I find it worth it but will probably drop it once I've gone through it all.

The Others - amazon prime -While awaiting her husband's return from war, Grace(Kidman) and her two young children live an unusually isolated existence behind the locked doors and drawn curtains of a secluded island mansion.

It was 5 of 10 at best.   First there was not one person I cared about for the most part, it was okay if they all died.  Plus old dude was super smart and did really savy things while everyone else didnt have common sense.   For example, just throw something anywhere when someone is shooting based on sound.   To simple not to do.

I thought the girl and her sister were pretty sympathetic.  And what you're saying about not having common sense you could say about just about any horror movie.  I thought the concept was original, well developed, and pretty well executed.

Your rating is too low!

The Wailing - Amazon Rental - This is one to add to your watchlists.  A Korean movie about a village undergoing random deaths and illness after a suspicious Japanese man moves into town.  First off, this movie is in Korean and subtitled, AND it's 2.5 hours long so there's a bit of effort required here.  You will be rewarded for the effort, however.  Paraphrasing from an IMDB review that put it best, "by slowly unveiling the real nature of certain characters, the last 45 minutes of the movie will change your perspective on the whole thing. Every few minutes you will switch sides when trying to determine whom to trust and only when the big reveal comes do you realize how detailed the setup to get there was.".  This movie will stick with you, having you asking lots of questions about the characters and their motivations.  The characters are portrayed well, especially the dad and his daughter.  I put this on my best of 2016 list.

OK, so it's October tomorrow and since I'm still 100% into my horror phase, I'm going to try to make a "thing" out of it.  I'll kick it into overdrive and will watch one movie a day and post about it.  I may not post everyday depending on schedule, especially on weekends, but I'll stick to the schedule of watching one a day and there will be 31 reviews come Nov 1.  I'll also keep a rankings list of all the movies watched.

I'll stick to movies I have never seen.  Here's the tentative list of films in random order based on my Amazon and Netflix queues:

Honeymoon
The Gallows
Tales from the Darkside the Movie
Children of the Corn
Home Movie
Lockout
Pulse
High Tension

Look  forward to the reviews.  Always have high hopes to do this, but seem to run out of steam quickly.  I think the most I have gotten through is about 20.  I do have some coming in on bluray that I haven't seen in a long time and I am curious to see how they hold up: American Werewolf in London, The Thing, The Exorcist, Texas Chainsaw, Halloween, Rosemary's Baby.  Going to try to sprinkle in some that I haven't seen too.  I have my eye on Krampus, Ravenous, Eyes Without a Face, Late Phases, Kill List, Oculus, and a bunch of others in my Netflix queue.

You have quite the mix of movies in your list - a lot I haven't seen, and handful look to be from my suggestions, so I hope you like those.  I completely forgot about Deadgirl which was, um, interesting.  Sleep Tight was also creepy as hell and unnerving.
