FFA Official Horror Movie Thread Catching up on Shudder and Various Streaming Platforms (3 Viewers)

V/H/S/85

Definitely better than some of the other recent sequels, but not award winning by any means. If you pay close attention, you’ll see a quick clip of GWAR’s first concert (seriously) towards the end. 2.75/5

Found Footage movies - I saw a lot of inventiveness from this subgenre over the month and a lot of my favorite watches were from here. However, I don't think I like this trend of movies like Dashcam and Deadstream where we have 1 lead and the shtick of also seeing the comments on the screen. I get why it's going that direction, but I'm too old for that and hope it doesn't tilt too much in that direction.

Do you have a full list of these?

No, and I could be exaggerating. I was thinking of those 2, Host, and #Alive. Just a trend I noticed specifically from newer ones coming out in the last few years.

You're not exaggerating. It's almost as if found footage has exhausted the amount of fresh new ideas there are out there.

As for a list, I would consider these great, essential found footage

The Blair Witch Project
As Above, So Below
The Taking of Deborah Logan
REC
Lake Mungo
Grave Encounters
The Sacrament
The Borderlands
V/H/S 1 and 2
Paranormal Activity
Creep

Also noteworthy:
Noroi
The Poughkeepsie Tapes
Hell House LLC
The Atticus Institute
The Bay
The Den
Devil's Pass
Be My Cat: A Film for Anne
Trollhunter
The Last Exorcism

Yeah that one is messed up. Another that will really get to you is Megan Is Missing. I usually don't recommend it because 90% of the movie is just ok, but the last 10% is very messed up. If you have young, or teenage daughters, think twice about watching that one.

I disagree unfortunately. This movie is the American remake of REC and is inferior to the original in every way.

The Borderlands is an interesting movie. Never saw it before today. I like the low budget look of it and its simple premise. 3.25/5

I like it because it takes the typical "everyone dies and their footage was later found" trope and does something interesting with it, by having them
descend into what they think is a cave, but is actually the mouth/belly of a demon.

We have a pretty bad track record of remaking foreign horror movies.

Quarantine - Rec
Martyrs
Let the Right One In - Let Me In
The Wicker Man
Goodnight Mommy
Pulse

The only one I can think of that is probably as good as the foreign original is The Ring and even that's debatable.

I loved Ringu......I really liked The Ring.....I thought they did a very good job creating a scary movie from the source of a very good horror film.

I saw the Original Martyrs.....never saw the domestic remake.

But I agree with the general sentiment you expressed. We have not done a great job.....so tonight I am going to watch REC and check back in. Because I did really enjoy Quarantine and had no idea it was a remake of REC......so not having that source material I had no point of comparison.

Awesome, I'm sure you'll love it but will be curious to hear. It's funny though that the two movies are only a year apart, which is really fast for it to be a true "remake", maybe more of a concurrent production.

Don't even bother with the Martyrs remake. Just awful.

Tonight it's Carrie. I've only actually this once before and I forgot how weird the opening soft core porn locker room scene into tampon period blood thing is. It's weirdddd.
Yeah the slo-mo boobies goes on a bit long. DePalma being DePalma. It's still an all timer for me, mostly based on the performances.
I don't think there is a single bra worn in this entire movie lol
70s, baby!
Sissy is so perfect in this. It's a tough role to sell being awkward and unpopular but also being super cute and lovable. She's gorgeous in this movie and so sweet.
Agreed. Piper Laurie (who just passed) was also incredible as mom Margaret.

I could have misread, but I thought @shuke was asking about specific ones I was describing and that trend- where it's more of a live feed with comments, not found footage in general.

Ah ok. One that is really good that I believe is kind of in this format is The Den. It's a lot of footage from video chatrooms and such. I dont know if it has comments though. It might.

There's also a series of recent movies from one director where the entire movie is told from the perspective of social media posts/video chats/facetimes. They are called Searching, and Missing. So for the entire movie, it might start with the guy searching facebook, and you are basically seeing the computer screen with the mouse, etc. then it'll switch over to the guy doing a facetime call and you'll see it from the perspective of seeing a facetime call on your phone. Then he'll find an SD card with videos and you see him watching the videos. It's an interesting format and the stories had enough twists to keep it interesting. They're not quite horror though, more like a drama/thriller.

Here's a trailer. Again, not quite horror, but definitely in the found footage genre.

I might have to check that one out now. I just have mixed feelings about the trend. It's distracting and annoying for an old fart who hates social media and videos like that, but I will admit sometimes they are funny. I liked how Deadstream handled it more because it was interactive. E.g. a follower would link up a video of some info or ritual that was related to the shenanigans going on. I liked your list you posted and agree with the ones I've seen (I need to get to As Above So Below and a couple others), and also agree with the American remakes of foreign horror. I don't know what gets lost in the translation, but besides The Ring, none have been near as good. Others that surprise me are ones like Funny Games, The Vanishing, and The Grudge where they are the same director doing the remake.

OMG, thank you! Agree with the above. Quarantine was one of the worst of the remakes I watched. Not sure if it was THAT bad, or I just like [rec] that much.

I think found footage peaked about 5-10 years ago. I'm a huge fan of the subgenre, but there really are a lot of stinkers out there. It can be hard to find the good stuff and there hasn't been anything worthy of a list in a few years IMO.

Also, I think for next year, we should spend Aug-Sept coming up with a definitive 31 movie for 31 days list, kind of how we did the top 100 70s/80s/90s threads, but with more people. Then the list would be ready for the thread to watch and discuss during October. Is that what you already suggested? I cant remember.
I was going to present options to the group soon while we are in horror mode for opinions on categories and if they should stay or go. I think we could get a good idea on the categories now. What I thought would be wise for next year is repost the categories at the start of Sept. That way people could get an idea of what they might want to watch for those as they look what is on streaming and plan for things. I thought that month could be people throwing around ideas for the categories and where it is streaming, and less debating what the categories are. I hope that makes sense.

Last year I watched Unfriended and thought itl was pretty good. The whole movie takes place in like a Facebook page or Zoom meeting.

22nd - The Sadness (on AMC+). I watched this based on some recommendations upthread. What a frenzy this was! I found this to be like World War Z isolated in one Taiwanese city, with one disturbing wrinkle. These infected retain their cognitive thinking and memory while acquiring an uncontrollable urge to create suffering. Very gory and action-packed, with just enough breathing room to let the fright develop, something WWZ lacked until the end. This gets high marks. Grade A

The Sadness was pure insanity!!!!!

When it was over I was like “WTF did I just watch”

No, looking for a list of found footage. Love the genre. Huge fan of Blair Witch and The Last Broadcast.
Gotcha. I usually just look at wiki or google for an extensive list, or search "best of" for recommendations. I 2nd Scoresman's list, and have a bit of crossover. My favorites off the top of my head:

[rec]
Taking of Deborah Logan
One Cut of the Dead
Lake Mungo
Cloverfield
Hell House, LLC
Grave Encounters
Last Exorcism
Houses October Built
Trollhunter
The Tunnel
Host
The Bay
Creep
Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum
Paranormal Activity.

Looks like a lot of crossover with his list. Also looking at lists and recs now, it looks like there are more than I thought I haven't gotten to. Ones that looked good I just wrote down:

The Den
They're Watching
Unfriended
Butterfly Kisses
The Sacrament
Wer
Searching
The Conspiracy
The Medium
Incantation
Holes in the Sky
and set in Green Bay, I'm not sure how I don't track down Gags the Clown now too.

To narrow it down for a few recs I don't think people have gotten to in general if you want scary for me that's The Taking of Deborah Logan. For a lighter tone, I love One Cut of the Dead so much.

These are all excellent except for Holes in the Sky. It was just kind of meh. Replace that with Horror in the High Desert for a recent, decent flick.

Good to know. I will see what is streaming and get to a couple this month since the wife likes them too.

How about we talk out loud and brain storm? I am trying to keep this pretty simple, fun, and giving people choices. But I do want people to get introduced to new things or watch stuff they might not have. So I trimmed down the categories and thought something like:

Categories (10)

Slasher or Giallo
Found Footage
Horror Comedy
Religion
Folk Horror
Sci-Fi Horror
Body Horror
Psychological Horror
Foreign Language
Horror Anthology

Monsters (10)

Werewolf of Land Creature
The undead (vampire or zombie)
Ghost or Poltergeist
Witches
Demons or Devils
Kids and Teens
Water Creature
Clowns or Dolls
Machines

Makin' Movies! (5)

A movie from Romero, Carpenter, or Craven - but NOT from their main franchise (Dead, Halloween, Nightmare)
Female Director
Horror Debut
A movie with Tom Savini effects
1st role for a famous actor

Misc (5)

A movie from your birth year
Rewatch a movie that scared you as a kid/teen
A 5th movie or higher from a franchise
Pre 1980s sequel or remake
Low budget horror ($1M or less?)

Watch one of your personal favorite horror movies (1)

I really like the categories and I think they cover a lot of ground paired with some of the monsters like Witches and Ghosts to cover other subgenres missed there. I also like the Makin' Movies ideas. Where I am iffiest on is the Misc and Monsters categories. I would love to hear ideas on tweaks or if people don't like this at all and want more specific ideas.

I also thought we could come up with "bonus" goals while you are filling out your lists, like making 1/3 of the movies foreign language, take a movie from 8 or more different decades, 80% new to you movies, stuff like that.

Thoughts??

@Ilov80s - I couldn't make it through Skinamarink. I couldn't imagine being a critic and having to get through that one in a theater without warning what it was. I got through about 25mins then hit the FF to see if anything else happened or it seemed to shift at all. Yep, it just got weirder. I will always give kudos to people trying weird crap, but it wasn't for me last night.
I watched it for about 10-15 minutes and gave up. My wife and I are usually pretty forgiving when it comes to horror movies but this was really annoying.

I didn’t get it either. Too artsy and lacking substance imo

Thoughts??

Under Misc - Movies where the dog dies. Just to mess with people.

I rewatched Hell House LLC last night since another one in the series is out soon.

It's a pretty spooky found footage/mockumentary with a decent twist at the end. This one gets points for being spooky throughout. So many found footage films are a snoozefest for the first 90% of the movie with all the good stuff at the very end. This one does not fall into that trap.

23rd - The Empty Man (on Hulu). I saw this based on a recommendation from a coworker. The beginning was pretty intriguing. Then it jumps ahead 13 or so years and it lost me, never really getting my interest back. Then it shifts into another kind of movie, sort of. This is the type of film that wants to be three different types of movies instead of doing any one type well. A couple decent visuals keep this from the bottom spot but I was disinterested for most of this. Grade D

The Night of the Living Dead (1968)
The one and only. I've probably seen this more than any other movie and is Top 3 all time if not the top of my favorites. I'm not sure how old I was when I first saw it but my parents let me stay up late to watch it. Not only did I have nightmares that night but they started up all over again the next night! I would check the TV Guide every week to see when it would be replayed.

24th - Vampyr (on Max). This had been in my queue for over a year and I finally followed through. This will be the oldest movie on my list and the only older horror I have seen is the silent Nosferatu (Frankenstein was released first but these two were filmed concurrently). This doesn't meet that standard, but fans of Nosferatu and the Dracula novel will recognize some tropes. But this has enough uniqueness to this to keep things interesting, including some ghostly imagery. Grade B

Going to see Five Nights at Freddy’s with my son up in Raleigh NC (Parents weekend).

He is a total addict on all the games, lore etc. Should be fun.
