FFA Official Horror Movie Thread Catching up on Shudder and Various Streaming Platforms (5 Viewers)

If you're looking for a film school level crappy b-movie style werewolf movie have I got a treasure for you. Werewolf Rising is sooo bad but does have a couple of great unintentional laugh out loud parts that almost make it worthwhile sitting through all 90 minutes. Dumb doesn't begin to describe this hunk o' junk. I watched til the end cuz I what else did I have going on last night.

10/25 - The Deep House
Hmm, a haunted house movie, but it's underwater!  This probably sounded good in theory, but in practicality it really wasn't.  The plot revolves around a young couple who explore abandoned locales that are supposedly haunted.  They learn of a secluded lake that nobody knows about which turns out to be a local hot spot.  But a friendly local takes them to a place where a house is completely submerged because of a planned flooding of the area.  Again, the premise is interesting but it's hard to make a haunted house too scary when the intruders can only swim so fast and the ghosts can only chase so fast.  I wouldn't recommend it. 2/5

I may light the firepit and put the screen up in the backyard for the kids if the weather is nice enough on Halloween.  Having trouble coming up with a good "scary" movie for kids (15's & 13's) that I won't get in trouble with the mom's for showing.  Looking for something that's not too gory or sexy or slow and maybe more recent so the kids don't tune it out for being an "old" movie.  Any suggestions?

Oh I know a good one leighh- the 2nd Jeepers Creepers. Set on a bus with a football team and cheerleaders stuck on a back country road in the middle of nowhere..

Don’t Breathe 2

I have no idea why they didn’t continue on from the original story, but this thing is a train wreck. Really laughed hard at all the forced foreshadowing at the beginning. It’s like someone read a Foreshadowing in Film for Dummies book.   Do not recommend. 2/5

I really think since they are teens.....they may love The Lost Boys from 1987. A great vampire movie that is a nice retro throwback.

The Conjuring will scare the daylights out of them.

The Shining will sure the daylights out of them.

The Ring is also a really freaky movie that should scare the crap outta them.

If we are going the don't want to get in trouble route, I was thinking The Ring or other pg-13 movies like that - The Gudge, Dark Water, Sixth Sense, The Others, Drag Me to Hell, Insidious, Mama, Last Exorcism.

Great call on The Lost Boys but my kids have already seen it.

Didn't realize The Ring was only PG-13 for as scary as it is, haven't seen it in a while but I liked it.

Host on Shudder

My girl wanted to watch something horror and we settled on this. The movie is shown via cameras from a zoom call that happens during the pandemic. A group of friends get together to have a virtual séance and... stuff happens. It is a little slow/annoying in the first 15 minutes or so, but quickly escalates from there. The scares were fun and well done. At only an hour or so long I'd say it's worth a watch if you can see yourself enjoying that format. 3/5

That may be true, but we all learned the Wolfman has nards from that classic!
I couldn't have told you the movie if you put a gun to my head but "Wolfman's got nards!" is in my brain to this very day :lmao:

I enjoyed this one quite a bit. If I recall correctly it was all done with whatever tech the actors could come up with at home and directing was all remote. Pretty cool idea.

10/26 - Nobody Sleeps in the Woods Tonight
Saw this trending and decided to check it out.  Come to find out, there is a sequel dropping today, so I've got my movie for tonight too!  Anyways, it's a slasher movie about a group of kids who are at a rehabilitation camp for people addicted to technology.  Hence the reason for said camp being in the middle of nowhere with no cell reception.  Anyways, a group heads off on a three-day hiking tour with a guide when they run afoul of a disfigured killer.  It's not bad for what it is, but it's pretty formulaic.  It's also a Polish movie, but the Netflix version is dubbed in English. 3/5

10/27 - Nobody Sleeps in the Woods Tonight 2
This is a sequel in name only.  It starts off shortly after the first one ends, but goes bonkers about 30 minutes in then goes completely off the rails as it progresses.  It's a complete deviation in tone and style from the first one and I don't even know how to describe it.  I was checking the time left about 1/3 of the way through as it just wasn't progressing then couldn't stop watching the last 1/3 but more because it was a train wreck than it was interesting.  I can see this becoming a cult classic in the vein of Killer Klowns from Outer Space or Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, but it just felt off to me. 1.5/5

Ahead of schedule- already got to 31!   The wife made a comment today as she was leaving for work about the movie I was starting, so we will watch Shaun of the Dead together tonight.   I am sure I will also watch Cabin in the Woods in the next couple days, as that has become my holiday ritual.

I am not going to take the time to rank everything I watched, but of the new stuff the top 5 I watched this month were:

Raw

Jennifer's Body

Lake Mungo

House on Haunted Hill

Houses October Built.

Of these, I've only seen Lake Mungo.  Might have to chase these recommendations!

I’m at 27 and likely a lot more to go these next 4 days. So far my favorite new to me movie was Train to Busan, my best rewatch was Carnival of Souls or Pans Labyrinth. Biggest surprise was The Birds. I had seen it before and didn’t like it at all, thought the FX were so cheesy. The Birds came as part of the Hitch 4K collection I bought last year so I have the 4K a chance and it was really good. I don’t know if they cleaned up the FX or what but it looked a lot better than I remember.

Saw Last Night in Soho on Dolby screen tonight. While not a traditional horror/slasher flick, it hit all the right notes for me in this particular Halloween season. Loved it.

10/28 - Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin
This could have been any found-footage film, but they stuck the Paranormal Activity tag to the title, so I guess it's part of the official canon?  Anyways, I don't recall any of the characters from any of the other movies so there was no continuation of story that I can remember.  It's not a terrible flick, but it hits all the found-footage tropes with jump scares moving the camera around and creepy stuff happening in the background.  The last sequence was pretty intense and the story was fine, but there were several moments where I thought, "Who in their right mind would be carrying a camera around right now?"  Not a bad watch, but don't go in expecting anything extraordinary. 3/5

His House

Interesting film about a couple who flee war torn Sudan and head to a small town in England where they realize they’re living in a haunted house. Some good plot twists and a nice change of pace for me. 3.5/5

Get Out is another that I worked hard to not spoil and then forgot about.  Will prolly check it out tonight.

Watched Halloween & Halloween Kills last night.....

Halloween is solid. Has some issues but is worthy.

Halloween Kills is steaming hot garbage. The Pavement mob scene (avoiding spoilers) near the end had me laughing at how bad it was. Not at all looking forward to them finishing this "trilogy" mess.

Like the 1978 original Halloween? You hadn't seen that before?

Ran through some short old horror movies that I had seen a bunch before since I didn't quite have the attention span last night to totally focus, had a few other things to do as well.

The Invisible Man- Claude Rains rules and brings such a fun sense of humor to it, the new remake completely missed on the spirit of the original

Frank and Bride of Frank- so well done and the sets are just incredible but my only complaint is the make-up from part 1 to the sequel was a major downgrade. I know it was really tedious and difficult for the original so I assume now that Boris Karloff was famous and had some leverage he put his foot down on the makeup. I get that but it does not look anywhere near as good.

Cabinet of Dr. Caligari- holds up so well and the Kino Lorber blu ray restoration looks marvelous. Other than the opening set-up, it's in better shape than a lot of restored movies from the 60s and 70s. Tim Burton must have watched this movie 100 times.

10/29 - Death of Me
The poster grabbed my attention and then the premise cemented it.  A young couple is on vacation and they wake up one morning with no recollection of the last 15 hours or so.  They find a video on his cell phone and, upon viewing it, things get weird.  It's a real mindf*** movie that messes with reality and time.  It's more of a thriller but certainly has some horror elements and is quite a good plot.  If you decide to try it, be prepared to focus as this isn't something to have on in the background. 3.5/5

No, I was referring to the newer Halloween that preceded Halloween Kills (why they used the same name is beyond me).

My bad, I thought that was clear.

Joe Bob Briggs has an episode with Cabinet of Dr Caligari

It is worth a watch

I went to see Antlers.

I am going to blame certain "medicines" I take for the following. In the last year I read a book called The Only Good Indians. It was a really cool concept with a pretty cool monster. For the life of me I thought Antlers was that book made into a movie. The result was I sat in the theater confused and wondering wtf was going on. The movie had just enough similar with the book that I figured they just used the monster and a loose premise. At some point I let that go and I enjoyed the movie.

The movie did drag at points for me, especially in the beginning. I also felt the acting was kind of stiff. The main kid in the movie was the standout actor in my opinion. Setting in the pacific northwest was nice atmosphere. LOTS of foreboding music. Once the movie gets rolling it's pretty good. The monster is fantastic. Special effects were top notch.

When I got home I looked up the book I read and found that it was unrelated to the movie. I will say the monster in the movie was what I thought the monster in the book would be like. The book happens on an Indian reservation and there is native american lore involved.

After Spiral last night I clicked on Saw 2 tonight.   So bad I wish I was watching Spiral again.

I thought I had watched most of these movies, but I think I only got through 3 or 4.

WE MADE IT!  My final two movies of the month were...

10/30 - Open 24 Hours
This is about a girl who just got out of prison for a crime that might be a bit of a spoiler so I'll leave it out.  She suffers from hallucinations and delusions that make the viewer wonder if it's real or all in her imagination.  It's a slasher movie with some PTSD thrown in but it comes together really well.. The title refers to the job she gets out of prison working the night shift (of course) at a convenience store/gas station that's open 24 hours.  This one was really good and I'm glad I stumbled upon it. 4.25/5

10/31 - Hell House LLC 3 - Lake of Fire
So, I watched the first one before October started and really enjoyed it then was let down by the second.  This one is very similar to the first for about 75% of the movie but then delves into an area that minimized the rest of the move but tied together the whole series.  If you liked the first one, this one is good for the majority of the movie and can overcome the ending. 3.5/5

Dammit, I was going to start in on "normal" movies this week, but a couple I wanted to watch last month popped up as now available on streaming:

It Follows - NF

The Fly ('86) - Hulu
