FFA Official Horror Movie Thread Catching up on Shudder and Various Streaming Platforms (5 Viewers)

Today was an interesting double feature of:

Pumpkinhead (1988) - I've been focusing a bit on folk horror this month, and this is one I kept putting off through the years assuming it was low budget cheese. In an ironic twist, I ended up liking this one more for the story and emotion than I did the f/x since it's directed by Stan Winston. It stars a surprisingly buff Lance Henriksen as a shop owner who summons an entity to seek revenge on a group of teens after an accident. This was surprisingly good and even the teens weren't the typical cookie cutter teens of other horror movies. 7/10

Pet Sematary II (1992) -
This one, on the other hand I found to be quite bad. The PCP pod doesn't get everything right of course, and this was one they were talking about in an episode I relistened to this month. I saw it when it came out, but thought it was worth a revisit with fresh eyes. I was wrong, and I will admit that I started skimming through stuff because I was not having a good time with it. 3/10. Edward Furlong didn't help the cause, but I thought maybe Goose and Mr. Krabs would help a little.

According to my letterboxd, that was #36 and #37.

I thought Hill House (the show) tailed off a bit at the end and started to use unearned jump scares too much. Overall good, but for me was another example of why I think movies > shows.

The Loved Ones (2009) was better than I remembered. Sure, I remember the basic plot and a couple of the messed up parts, but I had forgotten some of the good emotional hits and how good the acting was in this. Certainly the gore and themes aren't for everybody, so I am not going to sugarcoat that part. I stumbled across some info about the movie and that the director had the idea of a movie that mixed Carrie and The Evil Dead. Splash in Misery and as I said earlier the dinner scene of TCM and that about sums up the tone here. I hate the term so much, but I'd guess it gets lumped into the "torture porn" category but for me most of those movies aren't about watching for that, it's that they don't shy away from realistic gore and consequences of messed up situations. It would make a great, WTF capper for an all-nighter. 8/10, and cuts to the chase with an 84min runtime.

An Australian movie, and the director wrote/directed another short movie - The Devil's Candy. That is another I know I watched, but don't remember. The other one he directed is 2025's Dangerous Animals, which has been sitting in my queue since I saw the title and premise, so I might give that one a go this weekend.

Clearly inspired in part by one of my guilty pleasures Night of the Creeps, this begins with an alien being discovered by a small town couple messing around in the woods. Although I had seen this when it hit theaters, I had forgotten how fun it was. The deliberately campy tone suits this alien creature feature perfectly, while hitting high tension at just the right points. An entertaining one to watch, especially in a group. Grade B+

22nd - Burnt Offerings (Prime) - Another wife pick, this one from the 1970s and it shows, in good ways and not-so-good. A family looking for a summer retreat finds an offer they can't refuse in leasing a huge and secluded, albeit somewhat aged, mansion... with a catch; they must also care for the owners' mother while they're there. Starring Karen Black and of all people Bette Davis, it's good at establishing the setting and an eerie mood, but this progresses a little too slowly for my taste. This is also the rare PG rated horror, though that doesn't really compromise the story being told. The ending sequence elevates this to borderline. Grade C+

Love Slither. Did your wife like it?

Firing up Terrifier 3
Another of your wife's picks?? ;)

Joint pick. It’s not high cinema but for pure gratuitous gore it’s a good series
I "liked" 3 better than 2, but it's a bit too much for me overall. I thought Art was at his best in the diner scene in the 1st one, then it gets carttoonishly gross from there.

It was one of the few times i paused and wondered what it said that it made almost 100M and became so mainstream.

Yeah, she really loved it, despite generally not liking body horror

I get that it has that element to it, but I would consider it more horror/comedy overall with it's tone. Nothing like a Cronenberg movie or others usually associated with the subgenre.

The Invisible Man ('33) was a new watch for me, and one of the OG classics I hadn't gotten to. I didn't realize he was already invisible from the first scene, so that was interesting to me and I thought some of the ideas and f/x held up. There is a bit of silliness that I don't remember being in others from the time, but that was also perfect for my daughter. She did actually jump a little when he started taking off some of the bandages to eat and other things and by the end we were both joking around and having fun. She seemed to like it a lot, but I found it to be a bit above average. We might try another one after work today - maybe Frankenstein or Wolf Man. 5.5/10 I would be willing to give it a higher mark or rewatch it again if not for the screeching woman at the Inn he stays at.

Dangerous Animals (2025) is a hard one for me to rate. The acting was surprisingly good, especially Hassie Harrison in the lead. Jai Courtney was also near unrecognizable to me, and also quite good in this. That said, I was pretty bored after awhile and will admit to FF in the middle for 10mins or so. The last 10-15 were also reaaaaaally bad. If I hit the FF on a movie, that usually means the rating is 2/10 from me (so my Pet Sematary 2 rating above is incorrect), but I think the acting is enough to give it another point and a half, so 3.5/10. Still not enough that I would stick out my neck and recommend it. I really needed to be shorter, have a few more kills, and not try to shoehorn in a romance. One of my few whiffs of the month.

Invisible Man is maybe my favorite of the old Universal movies. It's camp and Claude Rains is having a lot of fun with his evil scientitst character. I love his evil plan which is just to kill enough people to take over the world. The f/x are shockingly good too. It certainly has a different tone than Dracula or Frankenstein but I enjoy thay about it. The even weirder one IMO is The Mummy. That's more of a romantic tragedy than a horror movie IMO.

I had been meaning to watch The Witch for a long time. Didn’t enjoy it at all.

Hereditary was fantastic, glad I watched it based off recommendations here.

Going to watch Bring Her Back based off comments here.

Thats funny. I just did a rewatch of a few movies. I really liked The Witch the first time I watched it and liked it even more on second view.
I didn't care for Hereditary or Midsommar the first time and liked them both even less the second time.
Maybe we'll agree on Bring Her Back, which I liked a lot.

Heck of a list here for the your time watching them.

Bring Her Back is fantastic

Under the Skin - Watched based on multiple recommendations. I liked it, didn't love it. I'm really upset that I went 12+ years since this film was made not knowing how much Scarlett Johansen "reveals" herself. I had no idea. Nice surprise.

Love The Witch! What, you don't like watching some puritan chop wood really, really well while being a disaster at every other facet of life? Guessing thou would not like to live deliciously.
Lol. I was just coming in to post that.

My favorite was a customer saying it was a terrible movie because it's title is The Witch and you never see a witch. (Not suggesting balco is saying that).

To be clear, in general I don't love the old horror (pre-60s). I appreciate the craft and the history more than like watching the movies. Of the ones I've seen, I like Frankenstein the most, but even that I'd probably put a 7/10 or so on my scale. Invisible Man has been my 2nd favorite, but I had to take a point off for that lady's yelling. Nails on a chalkboard for me, so not something I'd watch again. I don't fully remember Wolf Man, so that will probably be my next watch for myself.

Weirdly, the silent movies have creeped me out more than the ones from then until the 60s.

No shtick? That's hilarious
100%. Knowing me, I am sure I was dumb enough to a "KP recommends" type talker on it. I remember having a mild argument about it and them getting grumpier when I pointed out that you see one doing a ritual within 20mins or so.

My favorite customer ever was the lady that would come in every other Friday, get a couple movies, come back on Saturday and saying "do you have any movies that don't suck?"

I wasn't expecting a masterpiece, I mostly had it queued for a dumb mindless night for the month. It was getting bumped down the list, but I was more interested after seeing the tie-in to the director of The Loved Ones. It wouldn't have been terrible if there was a few more kills and/or the method with serial killer wasn't exactly the same each time. It just dragged in the end.

I should have gone with my gut and rewatched Piranha 3D or Lake Placid, but I just HAD to watch a new one. I was thinking about possible fun ideas for the ANIMALS category of the all-nighter theme I posted a bit ago. I was thinking Piranha 3D (AMC+) or Monkey Shines (Prime). Those are probably my next rewatches.

The things I'd pick out from the cover pre-internet... while it's fun to think back to those days, I probably went about 15% on movies even reaching average quality.

 Very fair. We probably remember the great ones so much because you had to get through 9 others that didn't hit. Especially in this genre during the 80 and 90s.

You gotta go with Alligator then. It’s hilarious. I recently watched Rogue (crocodile). Not a half bad watch imo

Yeah the 30s/40s Universal have a little cheesy element to some of them or just the sound use isn't perfectly worked out. None of them are scary. Some of the silent movies are genuinely creepy even today.

Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers I am sure I rented this from Blockbuster or one of our local independent video stores with my best friend Gabe. We loved horror movies and this was right in our peak horror watching 6th-12th grade. But I had no recollection of seeing it and did not remember this was Paul Rudd's first movie. What a pile of garbage this is. Dumb story, kills suck. Dr. Loomis deserved a better final movie. But HBO Max has a few more Halloweens movies streaming and despite perhaps my better judgement, I am going to watch more this weekend. Next up is H20 which i 100% remember seeing with a bunch of friends opening weekend. JLC's return. Hot Hartnett. Josh Gordon Leavit, Michelle Williams, LL Cool J, Janet Leigh. It had something for everyone. This one was so hyped up when it came out and I remember liking it a lot. What I don't like is the fact it was made 20 years after the original Halloween and now it's almost 30 years since H20 came out.

Ok so I am looking at Halloween, Halloween 2, Halloween H20, Haloween Resurrection and Halloween DGG. How do these all work timeline wise? I think there are two lines here

Halloween -> Halloween 2 -> Haloween H20 -> Haloween Resurrection

and

Haloween -> Haloween DGG movies.

So I think I will try to do both. Seeing Halloween 78 twice in the next week is just fine with :)

Unhinged spelling in there. AI says:
  • The original timeline
    • Films: Halloween (1978), Halloween II (1981), Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988), Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers (1989), and Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers (1995).
2. The "requel" timeline
  • Films: Halloween (2018), Halloween Kills, and Halloween Ends.
3. The H20 timeline
  • Films: Halloween (1978), Halloween II (1981), Halloween H20: 20 Years Later (1998), and Halloween: Resurrection (2002).
4. Rob Zombie's remakes
  • Films: Halloween (2007) and Halloween II (2009).
5. Other continuities

I know how to spell Halloween. Just not paying much attention to what I a typing here, mostly watching football. Anyone with experience watching the movies in various orders? I am not touching the Zombie ones. I don't want to watch 4 and 5 again. Seen those enough before.

If Hocus Pocus counts as horror, I had the pleasure of watching that today and hating near every minute of that experience. 1 point for Stephanie Faracy in the Madonna costume, though.

I'm having about 8-10 niece/nephews (aged 4-10) over on halloween to watch this on my outdoor screen. It'll be my first time
:oldunsure:

It's pretty rare i do this, but doing a quick turnaround and watching Weapons again. Really enjoyed it the first time, listened to a horror podcast highlighting it, now I feel like it's a perfect time to rewatch and catch everything

Just finished Weapons. Kinda disappointed. It was ok but expected more from all the rave reviews. Almost saw it in the theaters and now glad I didn't. Wasn't scary at all but I didn't hate it. Doubt I'd ever watch it again.

In that format where a group of kids are having a blast and I am not watching every minute of it would be fun. I still hope I never have to watch that again.

I think it’s just as good on 2nd viewing where you know the plot and can watch just to see again how it all ties together.

To each their own but I think you probably would have liked to more in the theater. There were several moments that got huge audience reactions which I think enhances the scary and funny parts of the movie. If nothing else it’s the funniest horror movie I’ve seen in a bit.
