FFA Wagering Thread: THERE HE IS!@! (15 Viewers)

Long time lurker in this thread but don't post much. Not a serious gambler, but am going to put a unit on Penn State +6 for the first half.Penn State has really tried to play a grind it out style of play in this tourney, using as much as the play clock as they can before they shoot. I think we will see them trying to limit Ohio State's possessions and using up much of the time forcing Ohio State to play defense. Could easily see this being a low scoring first half with Ohio State leading by a few. Penn State plus 6 for the first half is what I like...Good Luck all...
I really liked this bet, but a last second 3 by Diebler pushed the lead up to six and gave me a push as well...Oh well..
I tailed it, looked like the right call. a push is certainly better then a loss

Sixers -3

Utah is something like 3-10 since Sloan left. Hard trusting the Sixers, but we'll give it a shot

I had 2 units on VAN -1.5, and another on VAN/MIN over 5.5. Empty netter with 3 seconds left = 4-2 Vancouver win! :moneybags:

I would post in this thread more, but I don't want to lose money for you guys as well. Just had to share some excitement with fellow degenerates.

Hockey tonight

Sharks +105

Sharks got mauled last night in Chicago but they are just better than Dallas and a plus number is nice to get even with the circumstances.

I like the Preds -115 tonight as well. gllllllll

CIT Tournament, 7PM: Ohio University (+7) @ Marshall...

Ohio University was a 2010 Big Dancer, where they beat Georgetown before losing to Tennessee. They are a MAC East Division Team, which I mentioned before was the stronger side of the MAC. Marshall is from a better Conference (CUSA), but they were decidedly mediocre, not upper echelon CUSA squad. Seven seems like too big a # to me here.

I also like ETennStU. (-4) vs Furman (CIT, 7PM)...ETSU (#2 Atlantic Sun) was in a 2-Team race at the top of the Atlantic Sun Conference with Belmont, before getting upset in the Semi's. They represented the A. Sun in last year's Big Dance as well. Much better Team than Southern Conference #3 Seed Furman, and they feature a Stud Player, Mike Smith, which is something I look for in the lesser post season tournaments.

Finally, I like Dayton (+5.5) @ College of Charleston (NIT 7PM) - Dayton is the higher seed, but since the First Four of the Big Dance is being hosted there, the game is being played in Charleston. Charleston was the #1 Seed in the Southern Conference, while Dayton was #9 in the A-10, but that was due to early stumbling in the Conference Schedule that wound them up at 7-9. They hit their stride late, and made it to the Championship Game where they lost to Richmond. Charleston is at home, and features a Stud, Andrew Goudeluck, but Dayton has a 'Big Three' core group who are better than every player on Charleston with the exception of their Stud. Dayton just played on Sunday, while Charleston hasn't played in over a week. Charleston could come out cold.

In the First Four, I like UAB as well, and I also like Arkansas-Little Rock. Solomon Bozeman is a S.T.U.D.

I'll be back. Good Luck!

####, forgot this play earlier today, it's for tomorrow:

1u Alabama St +3.5

There are +4s out there at some random places

I was going to just watch this one, because it should be sheer basketball enjoyment that might go either way, but as it ought to go down to the wire, I think 6.5 is too big of a margin...

UTEP +6.5 @ New Mexico

...if this game was anywhere but The Pit, it would be a Pick'm, I think.

Good Luck!

Interesting note: Sometimes you have to watch how things play out. Coaches/Teams watch plenty of basketball games, and can/do feed off how they play out. Here's what I mean: Alabama came out like gangbusters tonight, and worked over Coastal Carolina pretty good. That, to my eye, sets the tone that the Teams who were snubbed by the selection committee have come to the NIT to play basketball, and aren't consumed by a Pity Party...watching this, it would have been shrewd to at least have placed a speculative wager on Boston College, who's in the same boat. I think it's safe to assume they had an eye on this game while they were getting ready to hit the court vs McNeese St., and used it as motivation to come out and lay the wood, which they are engaged in right now.

To me, this makes Colorado and Va Tech absolute 'must play' 's. I also bumped up my wager on UAB, who is saying all the right things about 'folks saying we don't belong here.' With Clemson currently up 8 as I write this, perhaps I'm wrong about the flipside, but there's a lot of basketball still to be played, and IF UAB advances, we're all going to have to give Michigan, Michigan St., and Penn St. just a little more of a look before making up our minds about them.

I'm obviously a Penn St. Alumnus, but I'm absolutely shocked, and as a huge college hoops fan, somewhat unpleasantly, that Penn State got an at-large bid. Michigan, too. Michigan St. at least has plenty of cred to merit squeaking in, because they've overachieved in the Dance for as long as I can remember.

If I was Seth Greenberg, I'd be in jail and someone would be dead by now. Of all the questionable outs, theirs is the one that puzzles me the most.

...and on a neutral court, Va Tech would beat Penn St. at least 7 out of 10 times.

...but I'm getting off topic.

St Mary's, CA ought to be in the same boat, except that Kent St. is no joke, and will likely be coming to play themselves, since they were the MAC regular season Champion, and lost the Conference Championship game by 1 point to longtime bitter rival Akron. How the hell is the MAC regular season Champ a 7 Seed in the NIT, and a 12-point dog to @ St. Mary's? Silly, IMO.

I will not respect myself if I don't play this, so my last play of the night:

Kent St. +12 @ St. Mary's, CA

Good Luck!

good call. :banned:

Played Big East victories o14.5 and o15 at carib. Sportsbook currently has 15.5 -140 and greek has o16 +115, still like the over. Pitt/ND/Cuse/Lou/Uconn/WVU could all make deep runs.

ETA: it's such a massive conference and its spread out pretty well throughout the bracket so the teams don't knock each other out.

A few of tonight's games:

NCAA First Four in Dayton, Ohio:

I have the utmost respect for bmj, the system, and the picks. I've done quite well by him, and hate going the other direction. That said, I am backing UTSA tonight over Alabama State. Alabama State finished hot, including their conference tournament. Both these Teams were upset winners of their respective conference tournaments - neither was expected to be dancing, but Alabama State is by far the worst Team in this tournament by a number of metrics. They have an atrocious offense. While UTSA has an average, at best, defense, they DO have Devin Gibson, who is an absolute STUD guard who could come off an NBA Bench. Alabama State has seen precious few players like him, especially during the last half of the Season through conference play. Superior guard play is a solid metric on a neutral court matchup between two relatively similar Teams. Having a STUD is an even bigger factor. I got this at -3 last night, and it's now down to -2.5. if it drops any lower, I might buy some more.

CBI Tournament: Miami, Ohio (+8.5) at Rhode Island: I'm flummoxed by the line, but I'm not going to waste time questioning it. Miami, Ohio is a MAC East Team (the stronger division), and was the Conference 3 Seed, upset by eventual MAC Champ Akron. Rhode Island was 6th in the A-10. Home Game for Rhode Island, but +8.5? Come on, now...

NIT Tournament: Miami, Florida (-10) vs Florida Atlantic: Miami, Florida is way too strong, big and athletic. They could win this by 20. For those of you, like me, who have trouble betting HUGE spreads, this game would be a solid investment if you're nervous about betting Colorado or Va Tech , who are both favored by 20+, because this one is about as big of a mismatch at a much better price.

That's all I've got for now, but I feel VERY GOOD about these 3 plays.

Good Luck!!!

Hockey tonight:

Ducks/Blues over 5.5 (-115)

Anaheim is one of the better power play units in the NHL (4th), St Louis trends over and they've played three times this year all the games going over (last one had 12 goals, one before had 11). Price is nice, this one should be over by the early third. gllllllll

Looks like I'm swimming against the stream again...for VCU to win this game, they have to play a near perfect game. I'm on the Trojans, -4.

I hope to have some stuff up for the 10 PM starts...

Good Luck!

Somebody has to get things started today...

West Virginia -2.5

I think people are overreacting a bit to both Clemson's win against UAB (the five tallest guys from the FFA would have beat UAB that night) and West Virginia's loss to Marquette. WVU is a team that has beat UConn, Louisville, and Notre Dame in recent games; don't over think this.

Good morning folks! So what's the play today?

Memphis hype around town is very solid. Buddy works with ESPN RADIO locally and is hosting a remote at the biggest bar on the UofM college strip. 92.9FM locally... 92 cent beers. Took a half day off work... will be belly up to the bar watching the UT game by noon. :banned:

Tailing! :hifive: (most. Had to buy some points on some..some were a little too far gone).

Butler +2.5

Lotta hype about ODU, and I lot of it is warranted. But I'll stick with the tournament experience of Butler and getting +2.5 in a game that should have stayed as a PICK. I also like Butler's advantage in both free throw and three point shooting.

After speaking to my college hoops gurus, here is what I have going:

Richmond +3

Wofford +8.5 (This is my pick)

Wisconsin 4.5

K-State -2

Clemson +2.5

Lumpy having Wofford also convinced me that was the right play.

OUTSTANDING POSTING.Today is the day to make your money early, and then sit back and enjoy watching some great games that are too risky to invest heavily in.

West Virginia is a Final Four Team from 2010 that is battle tested and veteran laden. Agree completely about Clemson recently playing/fresh in people's minds beating a UAB squad that proved the critics right about not deserving their bid. Get on this now, get on this heavy, and if you can contain yourself, enjoy today's games while preparing for tomorrow's slate. This is the moneymaker.

lumpy, I like your card for the most part. Agree on ODU, Mich St., Bucknell, Wofford, Gonzaga and Wisconsin.

I SHOULD like Butler, being the defending runner-up, but they don't seem like the same Team as last year, and you're going to see an overwhemingly partisan crowd there for ODU playing in DC. Bucknell is going to get a TON of fan support here tonight vs UConn...conference affiliation be damned, no one around here has any love at all for the Huskies. BYU and St John's are ripe to go down today missing key pieces. Kalin Lucas isn't going out in the 1st Round of his final tournament. Belmont is a nice story, but they have neither the Defense or the firepower to take down the Badgers.

I railed Penn State yesterday or the day before, but you get inside this matchup, and it favors the Lions from a personnel standpoint plus they are going to have the crowd behind them, in a big way...As an Alum, one thing I do know is that Penn State has a HUGE fan base in Arizona - it's one reason why they accept Fiesta Bowl bids over other comparable invitations. Plus the fans travel well, and this is the senior year of easily the best player in school history since Frank Brickowski. If you watch this one, you'll hear it - this is a Home Game for the Nittany Lions, and they are diverse and talented enough to take advantage of at least this favorable matchup.

Games to stay away from:

Kentucky/Princeton - young, immature and supremely athletic vs veteran deep and much smarter Tigers. Too much risk.

Louisville / Morehead St. - these Teams have crossed paths in the NCAA's many times, but Morehead has never had a player like Kenneth Faried, and this isn't a standout Louisville Team. I love betting Louisville/Pitino, and I'm not touching this one.

Vanderbilt/Richmond - I made money with both these Teams this Season, and I know them well. One is a tournament choker, the other an upset king. Whatever. This is one of the most even matchups in the 1st round. Watch it, but don't bet it.

Kansas St/Utah St. - Pullen and company exited the Big 12 Tourney early, you pull the plug on Pullen, and it's lights out for K-State. Utah St. has the guys to put the clamps on him.

Good Luck!!!

One more: Florida (-13) v UCSB, and I'm going to be hitting this pretty hard too.

This is a true home game for Florida, and they are looking to put on a royal showing in front of an overwhelmingly partisan crowd. Also, UCSB is travelling across country, and this game will be taking place at 3:50 PM THEIR TIME...they haven't played a game this Season that early even on their coast, to the best of my knowledge. Looks great to me, spread be damned!

Good Luck!!!
