Fireplace questions (1 Viewer)

Can you convert a wood burning fireplace to a gas fireplace so that you can burn wood whenever you want, but also be able to just use the gas to heat the house if say, you run out of wood?

If so, how much money we talking here to convert something like that?

Just looking cause it would be nice to have a heat source if/when the power goes out.

It seems like you have an issue getting wood.
I certainly don't have an endless supply.................................. :kicksrock: :violin: :help:

Read up a bit on cost. Doesnt seem to terrible depending what you get.

Any suggestions? I would like an option that would heat the house on it's own. 2000 square foot bi-level, and it gets rather cold in Ohio folks.

You can have a gas line in a wood fireplace. You would have to (re)install the gas burning logs when switching from wood to gas. It is possible but doubt you would be heating much more than the room the fireplace is in.

Does the blower also run on gas? Without that blower, you wont be heating much. A simple generator sounds like a much better option?

yeah I have a portable battery that I am sure would run just the blower.

Another question, had chimney sweet today and there are some cracks a few tiles down, probably midway between the fireplace and the top of the chimney, so obviously below the roof line.

The guy (just a worker, not owner of the company) who has done this a log time told me if it was his own house he would use it as-is, but also recommended a stainless steel liner. Anyone know the cost on these? Bi level house. I think he said like 23 feet or something.

Also, do I NEED this? I don't plan to use the fireplace as a main heat source, mainly just if the power is out and maybe a few other times randomly throughout the winter.

Obviously it is hard to tell cause you cant see the cracks yourself, just that the guy said it wasnt really bad and he would use it himself as-is just not as a main heat source.
