Calling for snow showers in denver this sunday night.......how will this affect the passing game for both teams?

PS: The Broncos better wear those orange alternate jerseys.

Even better news for FWP!! If anyone has Dookie, you should start him too!

Denver's passing game is very shaky anyway, but they also are more accustomed to the mile high snow showers, so they're prolly unchanged. Pittsburgh, I would guess, planned to run most of the day anyway, might just shorten the passing game to more slants, screens, and drops just over the LOS to the TE. I'd say this is bad news for Holmes, good news for Miller, FWP and Dookie, not much change for Ward, and a little downgrade for BigBen w/ fewer yards overall.

I'm out of the loop - who the heck is Dookie?

What is seen as the snowy/coldest city city Green Bay, Buffalo or Denver?

Most people would say GB or Buffalo.

The weather in Denver on average is warmer and sunnier in the winter than in NY. Yes, they get more snow storms off of the mountains, but they have something like ~ 300 days of sunshine and many days of 50/60 degree weather in Jan/Feb in between the occassional foot of snow that is dumped on the city

He was arrested back in college at the U for breaking into a woman's apartment and taking a dump on her carpet. Hence...Dookie!

east coast bias.
GB = East Coast :goodposting: I believe the snowiest city in the US is Syracuse. Being 150 miles due west of Cuse, I would have to go with Buffalo. Buddy of mine lives in Minneapolis and he said they don't get all that much snow. That a lot of times it's too cold to snow in that there just isn't any moisture in the air. I think GB is in a similar situation...

For purposes of historical accuracy, I believe the dump in question actually was taken in a laundry basket in the women's dorm room closet. But we digress...

Wasted thread. We should continue this on the weather.com forums

I have lived here all my life and this is just another typical Colorado weather pattern. It is 70 plus degrees right now and will be the same Saturday and then the low is 22 on Sunday with snow.

Many of the snowiest cities in the US are downwind of the Great Lakes, where lake effect snow can pile on pretty quickly. Typically though, lake effect snows don't start kicking up until later in November. But as to how early the first snow is, Denver's average is October 19th. I couldn't find that data on Buffalo or Green Bay, but the average date for International Falls, MN is October 20th, so I imagine that Denver would historically have the first snowfall between the three. Here are the top 15 snowiest places in the U.S. (minus Alaska):

1. Blue Canyon, Calif. 240.3

2. Marquette, Mich. 141.0

3. Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. 117.4

4. Syracuse, N.Y. 115.6

5. Caribou, Maine 111.6

6. Mount Shasta, Calif. 104.9

7. Lander, Wyo. 100.4

8. Flagstaff, Ariz. 100.3

9. Sexton Summit, Ore. 97.8

10. Muskegon, Mich. 96.1

11. Buffalo 93.6

12. Rochester, N.Y. 92.3

13. Erie, Pa. 88.8

14. Alpena, Mich. 84.6

15. Binghamton, N.Y. 84.2

weather :nerd:
We average 250+ inches of snow a year here....two hours west of marquette, mi and 4 hours north of Lambeau. Denver is always the first NFL city to get snow.

Whats T.Henry`s history in snow games(buffalo ect;)...with the 1 cut run game i would think even against the Steelers he could do well (i know, wishful thinking)

I did not realize a city needed to be one of the top 2 snow cities for people to not be surprised if there is a little light snow in mid/late October.

Note to world: It DOES snow in denver. The avg temp may be higher than NY etc, but it DOES get cold.

Why is this remotely surprising? Its going to be Ocotber 21st already, not Sept.

Snow is good for a passing game. Slippery turf makes change of direction harder on corners.

Walker having knee surgery means no TDs for Cutler?
Fixed.
K let me rephrase. Historically games played in the snow means don't start your QBs?
I can't think of a good reason to start Cutler this week even if it was 85 and sunny. He's been steadily regressing without Walker and the Steelers' defense is tough. In my opinion, he's a poor start this week regardless of the weather. If the weather becomes a concern it just makes him even worse. Honestly, I could see him throwing for about 150 yards and 0 TDs. I have a feeling the Broncos are going to get the living s**t beat out of them Sunday night.

Thanks for the replies. Well here's to living and dying with Cutler this weekend in the snow! Maybe it will snow so bad that he won't get picked and give me negative points!

Gotcha - thanks.I'm liking the sound of snow, as I need to rely on Dookie with LT on a bye.

Agreed. As a Holmes owner, I was already a bit pessimistic about the prospect of starting him against Denver's passing D, but combine that with snow and his upside this week seems very limited. Personally, in my PPR league I'm sending him to the pine in favor of Kevin Walter as my WR3. As risky as it sounds, Walter is probably good for a solid to great game in Andre Johnson's absence while Holmes range is probably a lot wider (from terrible to great) this week.

Shhhhhh! It's not true! The weather sucks here! Stay away!

Let me be the first to call to everyone's memory the Oakland-Denver snow game and the field day Jerry Porter and Ronald Curry had.

Do the same arguments against Holmes in the snow apply to Marshall in the snow? I know Denver is "supposed" to be used to this, but Marshall's a relative newbie. I was considering starting him (new #1 with Walker out) over Holmes until seeing this, now I'm thinking Berrian and avoid this like the plague. (No I'm not trying to turn this into a WDIS. Just curious about the snow's effect on Marshall vs. the effect on Holmes that has already been mentioned.)

Crap, I just realized I picjed up Jeff Reed to take advantage of the Mile High altitude for long field goals. I know there is an argument to be made that snow actually improves the passing game, but there's no way it helps kicking. Someone remind me, though, does the kicking game usually get horribly worse? I have visions of this getting ugly...

This is great news for Davenport. FWP, not so much.
Care to explain why.
Because it will make DTs slip and fall letting FWP walk by them for 60 yrd TDs.
How does that make it better for Davenpoop and not so much for FWP?
ummmmmm... I think - and I could be wrong -- Pigskins was being humorous.I can't explain the first post quoted tho.
I'm guessing he thinks that FWP is all about finesse and no power, and that Davenpoop will run the ball better with the power running game in the snow. He is wrong, but that is my guess.

They're predicting possible snow showers, not a 14 inch blizzard. The amount of snow actually laying on the field figures to be fairly small, and both teams play in it every season. Unless it becomes a major storm, the snow should have very little impact on most aspects of the game.

I'm in Denver. Today it's supposed to be near 80 degs and then the storm is moving in tonight. Here is the local forecast but it's a tricky thing to predict weather in CO.

KUSA - A relatively powerful storm system will move into Colorado this weekend bringing rain, snow and cold temperatures. Even the metro area could see snow.

9NEWS Meteorologist Ashton Altieri says the storm will move over the mountains by Saturday evening spreading accumulating snowfall from Steamboat Springs to Telluride.

A WINTER STORM WATCH has been posted for most mountain areas from Saturday evening through Sunday afternoon. The watch includes Breckenridge and all of Summit County, as well as the entire Interstate 70 corridor from Idaho Springs to the Flat Tops near Glenwood Springs.

Most high country locations can plan on 6 to 12 inches of accumulation by late Sunday.

Ashton says the storm will push a cold front over Denver and the Front Range on Saturday evening. Light rain is possible but not likely after 5 p.m. in the metro area on Saturday.

The chance for precipitation will increase around the metro area Saturday night and as temperatures become colder; the rain will change over to all snow by Sunday morning.

Depending on the exact track of the storm, the metro area could see the first accumulating snowfall of the season on Sunday, according to Ashton.

As of Friday afternoon, snow totals are expected to be minor especially with the ground still relatively warm.

It will also be very chilly along the Front Range on Sunday with highs only in the upper 30s to around 40 degrees.

Ashton says we should expect temperatures in the 30s under cloudy skies for the Broncos game against the Steelers Sunday evening. A few light snow showers or flurries are also possible during the game.

Saturday: Expect mostly sunny skies along the Front Range today with temperatures well above average for the middle of October. It will be breezy at times with southwesterly winds at 10-20 mph with occasional higher gusts. The strongest wind will be found on the south side of town in Douglas and Elbert counties.

Tonight: A winter storm will move across Colorado overnight. Snow will spread over the mountains before moving into the metro area. A mix of rain and snow will start in the metro area after 8 p.m. followed by a change to all snow. The metro area could see up to one inch of accumulation by early Sunday morning

http://www.9news.com/weather/forecast/default.aspx

Sunday: Cloudy and chilly with a good chance rain and/or snow showers in the metro area. Minor accumulation is possible. It will be very chilly for the Broncos game Sunday evening with a few flurries possible. Lows will be near 30 while highs will struggle to reach 40 degrees.
