Whoever Fitz agent is... he should be getting more (telephone) rings after this one.

I don't get why you think he'd have to sign a long-term deal to get $26M over the next 3 years - any team would offer that with all guaranteed money for a guy who's right in his prime.
And I can't imagine why you think any team would offer him $26m guaranteed on just a three-year deal. When has any team made an offer like that on a young player?
When has a 25 yo guy like Fitz with two 1400 yard seasons ever hit the open market? Deals like that rarely happen, but if he did choose to go that route he'd sign a record contract for a WR.Think about it this way - the Lions had to spend the #2 overall pick on Calvin Johnson plus guarantee him nearly $30M.
You're missing my point. CJ was guaranteed $30m on a six-year deal. You're saying Fitz could get that on a three-year deal. That's a huge difference. No way does a team give any young player that much in guarantees unless they can lock him up to a long term contract.

What is exasperating about this signing is what took so long? Everyone knew Fitz was due a big payday whether his $14 million or a new contract and yet the Cards for whatever reason chose to do very little until now. Could this have been a conscious decision on their(Cards) part to avoid committing more money to free agents by using Fitz's contract as an impediment? There was no reason for this to not have been renegotiated well before free agency began. It's not like this whole thing snuck up on them(at least one would hope not).
There are extenuating circumstances here.1) Fitz' huge cap numbers in 2008 and 2009 were created because he reached a ton of incentives. His position that he EARNED that money is legitimate, because the team clearly wouldn't have felt compelled to pay him those extra millions if he fell short of those incentives [many that were considered unlikely to be earned at the time of the signing].2) Fitz is only 24 (he'll be 25 in August) and didn't want to commit to the Cardinals for the long-term. The Cardinals wanted him to sign a six-year deal; he didn't want to be beholden to them until his 30th birthday. Can you blame him? The Cards went 8-8 last year and it was considered a triumph. Yet, the Cards had to get him to add extra years in order to spread the bonus out enough to lower the 2008 and 2009 cap. They finally met in the middle, signing a 4-year deal [which is what Fitz wanted in the first place].

Bottom line:Good player stays on bad team:Winner is: All the other good teams that don't have to worry about another good team getting better by getting this guy.Fitzgerald will be a millionaire, but will never make the Hall of Fame because he didn't go to where he has a chance to win. So when his career is over and a thread is on here about "Does Fitz get into the Hall of Fame, " the answer is no because he played for Arizona, was content to play for a team who's arguably a better franchise than the Lions, which isn't saying much.If money is what matters, he's a big winner. If championships are and playing in a winning environment is, he's a big loser. It all depends on perspective.
New coach and .500 record Lost several close games including two to the niners otherwise they would be in the playoffs.Your statement is nieve to think the Cardinals will continue to be a poor team. I have zero doubt they will win the west this year. Larry and Q will both be Hall of Fame canidates barring Injury. I would rather lose Larry than Q.
