Fitzgerald calling out Floyd via Twitter (1 Viewer)

One of the beat writers (I can't remember if it was Somers or not) recently said that the coaches have made it clear they have no intention of rushing Floyd into the lineup, and that they're very comfortable with Roberts and Doucet as the 2/3. That seemed like pure rhetoric to me at the time (and it might still be), but this wouldn't be the first time a rookie came into the league needing to earn his stripes over veterans that we in the fantasy community didn't view as threats to the rook's playing time (only to be proven wrong as the season progressed).
While this is true, I don't see it as related to the camp issue. I think it's more of the coaches not wanting to anoint a kid, particularly in the press, when there are veterans who have already paid their dues. This is from two weeks ago: (Rotoworld) Larry Fitzgerald says first-round pick Michael Floyd impressed him during Cardinals OTAs and minicamp. "He really looked good in our Saturday practice out at the stadium making a couple of plays," Fitzgerald observed. "He consistently catches the ball. He's strong and physical at the line of scrimmage. He's an intelligent young man. He's really picking up and grasping things. Coach [Mike] Miller will tell him one thing one time in a meeting, and the next day you see him apply on the field."

From a month ago: (Rotoworld) Coach Ken Whisenhunt had praise for Michael Floyd's work ethic after the Cardinals' minicamp. Analysis: Floyd has done nothing to discourage the Cardinals' staff since they took him No. 13 overall. "He's worked hard," Whisenhunt said. "That's one of the things we liked about him."

Character concerns? They aren't all equal. Not directed at Jason Wood, but a lot of the noise in this thread is coming from people who've heard "character concerns" and had no idea what they really were. Was Floyd an angel in college? No. But we can do a little better than hearing something as vague as "character concerns" and jumping to the much more particular conclusion that he lacks work ethic or drive. Geez.
FWIW, I never mentioned character concerns.

Latest tweet from Fitz:

Just finished another strong workout with @Wellefast. @MichaelMFloyd killed it 2day & led the group in all drills & squaded 400+. #beast

Fitz runs a voluntary, private camp. Is Blackmon there? Or is he keeping the beer cold in the back of his car out in the parking lot?
Blackmon is in Jacksonville, all the way across the country.

Right. You didn't. I apologize if that's what my post inferred.

It was sarcasm. Is this the camp that Fitz runs for anyone in the league? If that's the case, why isn't Blackmon there? Is this the camp we get all giddy about and bump WR's when they attend it?I actually don't care. I just think it's odd that Floyd takes grief for missing the first couple of days of a voluntary camp that most WR's in the NFL are not attending and people see it as a red flag.

If Fitz sees it as a red flag, we should too.

Do you ever wonder or think these guys do these things just to mess with media/public?

I can totally picture Fitzgerald and Flloyd talking about having a little fun with everyone.

They just use the media to call out guys not showing up. Chris Carter did the same thing when Sid Rice missed a few. In this league if you're not working to get better, someone else is working to take their job.

On the plus side, apparently Floyd is working with Larry Fitzgerald between allowable team offseason stuff. On the other hand, sounds like he may not be all that dedicated to it:

Just finished a great workout with @Wellefast. I'm charging @MichaelMFloyd with a DWI "don't want it" he missed a 3rd straight workout 2day. -- Larry Fitzgerald
you know what i dont want? twitter.

This is so overblown. They are working out together. I expect them both to be in great shape. Dot Dot Dot End of story.

Its just a shame the QB isn't there practicing also.

1. Did Fitz call you up and verify that he thinks this is a red flag? He took a little jab at Floyd. Could be more good-natured vet on rookie ribbing than anything.2. Are you throwing red flags on all WR's that aren't attending Fitz's camp, or just the ones that miss a couple of days of it?3. What are the other rookie WR's from this draft class doing with their time right now? Picking up the red flags thrown at them?Much ado about nothing.

1. Fitz didn't call me directly, but he did let me know via twitter that Floyd wasn't there. 2. All other WR's aren't rookies on Fitz's team and aren't expected to attend.

3. See #2.

I agree that in the big scheme of things this isn't that big of a deal. But I guarantee it would have been a very big deal if Floyd had not attended at all. If you are a rookie on Fitz's team and he wants you at his camp, you'd better be there.

Here's a blurb from the Card's website about the situation:

To start, a disclaimer: Just because a player isn’t in Minnesota taking part in Larry Fitzgerald’s offseason workouts doesn’t mean anything particular. Guys can work out lots of places and be ready for training camp, and they are, even if the glare of a TV camera or a reporter isn’t around.

But it bodes well for the Cardinals that, after Larry Fitzgerald needled rookie receiver Michael Floyd on Twitter Monday for not coming out — like Fitz, Floyd is from the Twin Cities and is there anyway this time of year — Floyd showed up Tuesday and worked hard alongside some of his Cards’ teammates.

“That was my fault (not being here), just stuff with the whole situation,” Floyd said. “But it’s great. I know he wants the best for me and every time I’m out here with him, I work hard.”

Fitzgerald was teasing Floyd with his first message, but there was definitely substance to it. More and more, Fitzgerald — despite just being 28 — talks about being on the back half of his career and running out of time when it comes to getting back to a Super Bowl. It’s an exaggeration to a point, but it also speaks to Fitz’s desire to win a title. He needs guys like Floyd to be ready sooner rather than later. Maybe once in a while, that means a little nudge.

He had praise for his understudy today. He tweeted in part that Floyd “killed it 2day and led the group in all drills and (squatted) 400+ #beast.”

Like Floyd said, when he’s with Fitz, he works hard. Fitz will take that every time.

So then we agree that a tweet about Floyd not being there is really just a tweet about Floyd not being there. It doesn't mean that Fitz is actually worried about Floyd or his work ethic.Everyone should keep in mind that you don't have to be a Card to attend this camp. Each year we hear about players from other teams that attend. Is it a good thing to go? Sure. But we don't throw red flags on the multitude of players that don't attend it. Do we even know if Doucet or Roberts are there?

And are we holding the other rookie WR's from this draft class under the same microscope? Anyone even know what the other rooks are doing away from their organized team activities? Who are they working out with? Who's keeping them in line? Training camps haven't opened yet so I have to think that Blackmon, Sanu, Wright, et. al. have the opportunity to be there too.

I don't agree with your first statement. As I said in my post, since Floyd did show up, I agree it's not a big deal now. But if Floyd had not showed up, it would have been a big deal.Don't you see that it is different when the leader of your team is a guy like Fitz and he expects a rookie to show up for his camp and he doesn't? Can't you see that is different from some other rookie on another team not showing up?

And yes, Andre Roberts was there.
