Five Guys thread, a 130+ page swordfight. (1 Viewer)

You've had it though. You know what it is. What does it matter that you aren't currently right next to one? If someone had never eaten there they wouldn't participate in that part of the conversation. Five Guys isn't in every state maybe we shouldn't discuss that place either? Let's stick to Starbucks and McDonalds. Hey guys, who has better coffee Sbucks or McD's? No, it IS a legitimate question because everyone lives near both of these and per Aaron that is required.
I'm referring specifically the part of this discussion that revolves around value.

anytime someone tries to say something is a good value, people respond that it's not as good a value as In N Out. Ok. Great. Now what?

You guys have a chain that offers great burgers at a low price. Congrats. We're all very happy for you. Now maybe the rest of us can figure out where to get a burger that doesn't involve hopping on a plane.

Question for the In-N-Out crowd:

In-N-Out claims to not have a freezer. In-N-Out claims it makes shakes from actual ice cream. Discuss.
:headxplode!!11!!:
It's slightly more expensive to make your claims actually true, and not just FDA true.
Submitted to In-N-Out customer service:

This may seem like a silly question but I was having a discussion about the excellent food quality of your products and I mentioned that you have no freezers in your stores, which you state as a marketing point indicating that we know the food must be fresh. My friend asked me a follow up question that has me stumped.
If you have no freezers then how do you make real ice cream shakes?

Thank you for your timely reply.

This is about your own personal frustration. Has nothing to do with what we're talking about her.

You don't have to do that. I know what they do.

You don't have to do that. I know what they do.
You trying to build suspense?

We're comparing I&O and FG because it's an interesting comparison. Who cares that they don't overlap perfectly all over the globe?
it's a fine comparison at some level, obviously. They are two of the best burger chains.

but falling short of I&O on some aspects doesn't make it horrible. doesn't seem reasonable to argue that because I&O sells things for one price that any other good burger chain has to charge a similar price or else not be worth visiting. it comes down to what options people have imo. most of us don't have I&O as an option.

I think the expansion of 5G is a good thing for most consumers as it offers a quality product at a reasonable price. If I&O opened more locations, I'd be psyched too but they aren't going to do that.

In order to be considered "made with 100% real ice cream," an item doesn't actually have to be made with ice cream. It just has to be made with an ingredient mixture with certain ingredients which contains 10% milkfat.

They have a vat of "ice cream mix" in their walk-in (which doesn't quite reach freezing temperatures and is therefore not a freezer) which they pour into, essentially, a Wendy's frosty machine.

in looking around today, I think I read that I&O uses 100% ground beef while FG only uses 80%. Seems like that's an area people might want to focus on, especially since I&O is offering them at a lower price point.

No, FG uses 20% fat ground beef. 100% of it is beef, it's just 80% lean.

thats what I meant.

I&O website says "100% pure beef"

FG says "80% lean beef" I think.

that's a meaningful difference, no?

Those are two different measures of things. "80% lean beef" is still all beef, with 20% fat. Which is the ideal burger beef.

Again, I really don't see that argument being made.

While I prefer the double-double I still think the 5G burger is very tasty.

I also can totally agree that, at their best, 5G fries are better than In-N-Out's. My only real problem with them (ignoring my unbelievably misunderstood value stance) is that the 5G fries are so wildly inconsistent within a single batch, you gotta sift through a ton mushy/mealy ones to get to the excellent ones.

Maybe in the real world but we're talking about it in a thread on the internet. We understand you don't have In&Out as a daily option. Can we move past that now?

1: Do you like snow skiing or water skiing?

2: Well, I love snow skiing but I live in a warm weather climate so it isn't an option therefore I prefer water skiing.

1: OK, but if you didn't live in a warm weather climate which would you prefer?

2: WHY DO YOU INSIST ON COMPARING WATER SKIING TO SOMETHING MOST OF US DON'T HAVE THE OPTION TO DO? :loco:

Put McDonalds in the crap category and we're good. My daughter did an experiment for school where we left a McDonalds cheeseburger sitting out on our kitchen counter on a paper plate. After a month the burger looked almost the same as it did day 1. No mold nothing...the only noticeable thing was the burger shrunk a tiny bit. I won't eat that disgusting crap ever after seeing that. My kids used to love McDonalds and haven't requested us going there since.

What if I live in a landlocked mountainless state? Am I still allowed to have an opinion?

I understand the FDA regulations but do you know anything about the actual ingredients In-N-Out uses? Could it simply be heavy cream, milk, sugar, eggs etc? I need to know this answer and am willing to do the research.

100% lean beef would suck as a burger.

You can do the research, but it's my understanding that it's a trade secret mixture.

Now, Roy Rogers, they actually hand scoop the ice cream out of the containers, mix it with real milk, then mix it together in an old fashioned milkshake machine all right before your very eyes. And, it's a better value than I&O.

that's right, I'm going east coast chain on y'all.

Sounds great.

How are their burgers?

you can order online at Five Guys.

Regular Cheeseburger (2 patties) is $5.59 Little Cheeseburger (1 patty) is $4.19 Regular Fries are $2.59 Regular Drink is $1.99

Little + Fries + Drink = $8.77 + tax

Regular + Fries + Water = $8.18 + tax

is $5 for a burger really worth complaining this much about?
Update:

Regular Cheeseburger is $6.59, Little Cheeseburger is $4.79, Regular Fries $3.49, Little Fries $2.49, Drink $2.29

Little + Reg Fries + Drink = $10.57 + tax

Regular + Reg Fries + Water = $10.08 + tax

Looks like prices have gone up.

If I was going in, I'd probably order:

Regular + Sm Fries + Water = $9.08 + tax

$6.59 is a little on the high side for the burger, but the real ripoff seems to be $2.29 for a fountain soda. $2.49 for the small fries doesn't seem bad to me given that they are good and give you a ton.

Not bad. Of the true fast food chains, I'd put them on top. Double R burger is awesome.

I answered this earlier. Wasn't trying to evade the question if it was asked.

for just the burger, I like I&O better

for the overall meal (including fries), I like FG better

for value, I agree I&O is better but not enough to make a huge difference for me.

seems that I&O crowds make it a little less enjoyable because you often have long lines and a lack of seating. obviously that means it's popular/good but the online ordering at 5G is pretty nice.

Lol at the science nerds here. O.K experiment was a bad word sorry I'm not a science guy. Her class was talking about nutrition specifically the use of perservatives. The teacher gave them some examples of some things they could try home to demonstrate her point and my daughter wanted to see what would happened to a McDonalds cheeseburger. So no control group but I know most real buns would development mold after a week or two tops. I'm guessing a real hamburger would too and at the very least would smell funny.

Basically, your way would require them to make ice cream from scratch on site. You could have a fairly small batch ice cream maker, but I highly doubt you could get one with a small capacity and low cooling time to not need a freezer.

Finally, an answer like the fries at InNOut, honest. Thank you. Why didn't you jump down the throats of fudruckers/red robin crowd for making their comparisons? Why the anger for a burger you supposedly love?

I'm not angry. :lmao:

I've said all along I like both places. I wish I&O was more widely available but it's not. Their limited service area probably helps them keep the costs down and quality up.

I think Fuddruckers and Red Robin are also both national chains.

Amongst all this bickering, it's nice to know that we can all agree that Fudruckers has the best food and value. I feel like it's been glossed over in this debate for 2nd place.

Been about a year since I've been there so I don't remember the exact prices, but I'd say a little cheaper than wendy's.

I wish I&O was more widely available but it's not.
If if and buts were candy and nuts we'd all have a merry christmas. I wish I had an In&Out 10 steps away from my front door but I don't. You gotta move past this. If you were Tom Hanks in apollo 13 the spaceship would have blown up because after the #### hit the fan all you'd do would be to stare at the moon out the window. Time to worry about getting back to earth, commander.

If someone who lived a thousand miles from Buffalo told you BW3 was comparable to the other wing places in town what would you say?
In general, I'd assume they're crazy.
Aaron?
how is this comparable?are burgers a specialty in California? I don't get the point you're making.

if it's that most national franchised chains are terrible compared to local places, I'd tend to agree.

In N Out makes a really good burger at an affordable price and they have a large and loyal following as a result.

Five Guys makes a pretty good burger at a normal price and they are available everywhere.

I get a regular 1 patty cheese burger and a small order of fries for lunch once in a while at work for $8. This is a ton of good and highly competitive with other lunch options in downtown DC and less expensive than a place like shake shack. I'm not sure what your complaints re: the price are all about.
