Five Guys thread, a 130+ page swordfight. (2 Viewers)

Never heard of Five Guys. Coming home from the gym last night I saw a sign that they were opening up about 3 minutes from my house in Thousand Oaks, CA. Now, In and Out is 5 minutes, The Habit is 2 minutes, and the Original Tommy's is 10 minutes, so it better be good or they have no chance of staying in business with the local competition.
Which cross streets? All this debating is making me even more curious.

And as I've said before, I admit $10 worth of burger, fries and Coke at Five Guys tastes better than $5 bucks of burger, fires and a Coke at Wendys. It's just not twice better to me. Five Guys just isn't worth it to me to pay twice as much for, even though I admit it tastes better.
you're not getting an equal amount of food though so it's not a very good comparison.you're probably getting a bigger and/or better quality burger(s) at Five Guys and much better fries with way more of them included in that price.also, the fries at wendys are basically inedible, IMO.
Why do I need MORE food? More food is more calories!Isn't five dollars of food from Wendy's like 2000 calories? If I really want more food, I can just order a second burger and fries and it still wouldn't be $10 at Wendy's.
Again, take it home. There's no rule that you have to eat everything they give you. I've had leftover 5 guys twice now. The fries need 'something' out of the microwave, whether it be ketchup or mayo (what can I say, I'm a fry and mayo guy) but the burger out of the micro isn't bad.
I'm not going home. I'm at lunch during work. I don't work in an office with a fridge either. The food would bake in the back of my car while I'm doing my sales calls. I don't care how much food they give me for $10. It's a waste to me. I'm glad it works out for you. I'm not trying to convince people who like Five Guys that they shouldn't. If it works out for you, then great! I'm just with the group of people here who don't get it.

Have some good friends that went to HS in TO in the late 80s....

Neither here nor there. Just sayin'

The only thing I dont like about Five Guys is they wont make a triple for me. They just wont do it. I told them charge me whatever you have to, but they say no every time. And no, Im not going to order a double and a single and then take the one patty and put it on my double. If I wanted to build a burger, Id work there.

JUST COOK AND MAKE ME A TRIPLE CHEESEBURGER, DAMMIT!!!!

I think it's going in on Moorpark Rd and Brazil (between Hillcrest and Wilbur just north of the Janss Mall).Saw it yesterday for the first time and thought of this thread.

bacon cheeseburger, Lettuce, Tomato, Mayo

Cajun fries with ketchup on the side.

I'd eat about every 8-12 months,imo.

This thread had me all riled up.....hit the search location for 5 Guys....

find out there's 1 appox 5 miles away. (SWEET) !....Throw on my sweatpants for

some big time munchin and off i go. :lmao: Roll up on the place and see its just a shell, in the

process of being built. FARGIN BASTAGES....Hit the new Fairway Market and loaded up

on some Sheppard's Pie and Bass Ale's....Will try again soon.

got to try 5 Guys for the first time this weekend. This place is a blatant rip-off of In N Out. Their menus are very similar, and even the decor looks like a copy. I guarantee In N Out did the fresh cut fries long before 5 Guys.

The burger was okay, but it reminded me of something you might get at a backyard BBQ. The toppings were great but the meat was not of high quality, nowhere close to a Red Robin burger.

Considering that the closest I-n-O joint is about 3000 miles from here, I'm not really upset about this.

You just lost all credibility. Red Robin is horrible.

Whiskey River BBQ burger (with "some pink") = $$$Bottomless fries = hot and good! What's not to love??In any case, if I'm going to shell out that kind of money for a burger, RR is vastly superior to the one that I had at Five Guys. I will report in this thread again, though, as my wife will probably want to try it. Maybe I just got a crummy one?

are most Red Robin locations in the mall? B/c all mall food should be automatically disqualified from these discussions.

I haven't read anything in this thread yet. Just wanted to go on record that I refuse to eat at 5 Guys because it is befuddling that they do not sell milkshakes. When one opened near us we heard all the hype so went to check it out. We checked out the menu and saw no milkshakes. Then we asked to make sure.

How can you be a burger and fries joint and not sell milkshakes? That's like opening a BBQ joint and not offering mac and cheese.

You go to a burger joint to eat burgers not ice cream. You're completely off base here.FWI: real BBQ places don't serve mac and cheese, where the hell are you from?

As I mentioned earlier in the thread, 5 guys did experiment with that at at least 1 location, but apparently there was not enough interest to keep it and expand it to the rest of the locations. Probably just as well. After eating the 5000 calorie burger and fries, the last thing I need is a milkshake.

Burger, fries and a milkshake. That's been an all-American classic combo for 50+ years, ya pinko!FYI: I'm not talking about "Famous Dave's," ya Yankee!

Around here (Philly area) every successful non-mega chain burger place (Jake,s, Charlie's, etc.) has milkshakes. Even the chain places (like Red Robin, Johnny Rocket's, etc.) have milkshakes. Even McDonald's sells shakes!

I'm not sure I'd call those shakes. Lots of the other local burger chains in this area (BGR, Elevation Burger) do shakes, and do them well. In fact that's probably one of their main draws as the hamburgers aren't nearly as good. Really surprised 5 Guys hasn't decided to give it another go.

Elevation Burger is actually growing on me. They make some decent burgers (I'm not sure they are as inferior to 5G as you seem to suggest) and they do have very good milkshakes.

They're ok. Just given a choice, I'll choose 5 Guys. Seem to recall Elevation burgers being more expensive too.

Actually it's a Coke not milkshake but either way it doesn't matter. You're definitely a Yankee if you walk into some of the best BBQ places in the world that doesn't sell mac and cheese and downgrade them for it. You go to BBQ place for the BBQ not sides, go to a Steak joint for the STEAM so seriously, go to your local ice cream shop if that's as important as the quality of a burger shop.

Ours is stand-alone.
I've probably seen a dozen or more Red Robins over the years and not one of them has been in a mall.I hadn't thought about comparing a Red Robin hamburger to a Five Guys hamburger as Red Robin is a full service restaurant (sit down and be waited upon) where as Five Guys is a fast food restaurant (order at the counter and carry your own food).

But now that I think about it, price and quality of a hamburger, fries, and coke at both restaurants are comparable. At least at Five Guys I don't have to tip the waiter.

At Red Robin, a burger and fries is like $10-$11, plus tip. Waaaay more than 5 guys.

5 guys:Bacon Burger - $5.79

Med Fries - $2.59

Med Drink - $1.99

Total - $10.37 + tax

RR:

Guac/Bacon Burger w/ UNLIMITED FRIES - $9.79

Blackberry Tea - $2.79

Total - $12.58 +$2.00 tip = $15 bucks

$15 is waaaayyyy more that $10.37?

actually, it's like 45% more.

love 5 Guys ... I take them for what they are ... a nice upgraded alternate to typical fast food.

...but I am wondering , what are the odds this thread has more pages than the number of 5 Guys Menu items.

You should add their menu to your sig so we can discuss it properly.

I'm shuked by the 5G vs. RedRobin comparison. RR isn't fast food.

If you're gonna compare RR to something, Johnny Rockets ( :blackdot: ) or Islands ( ) would be more appropriate.

Only thing I can think of is if you are already at 10 bucks for lunch you may as well spend a couple extra bucks and get some better food at a real restaurant.

Perhaps you've never been to Texas but I can't remember one single reputable BBQ joint here that serves mac and cheese. You go for the BBQ and while the sides can be a bonus it should never be the reason why you won't go or not. Same thing for burger joints.

Agree. For a few dollars more, you get plates, waiters and a choice of how your burger's cooked. If 5G really comes out to ~$10 for a combo, then I won't bother trying it.

Arguing what real BBQ places do is incredibly contigent on what "real BBQ" is defined as. People who do BBQ in Texas are usualy referring to Beef Brisket, where as people who do BBQ in the Carolinas are usually refering to Pulled Pork, whereas in a lot of other places in the country BBQ is a sauce you put on any slow cooked meat. In fact, some people say BBQ is the grill that slow cooks the meat. There could be no sauce or rub added to the meat at all, but because the meat was cooked on their grill, it's BBQ. It could be nothing more than a hot dog, but the hot dog has been BBQed.

Without agreeing on what "real BBQ" is, the question of what sides should be served with real BBQ could go on forever.

Arguing what real BBQ places do is incredibly contigent on what "real BBQ" is defined as. People do BBQ in Texas, usually Beef Brisket, where as people in other places mistakenly call what they do BBQ. Now that we know what "real BBQ" is, the question of what sides should be served with real BBQ is fairly simple. Some white bread is really the only necessary item - you know, to soak up the grease in the stomach. Anything else can be nice, but is entirely unnecessary.

Grew up in Texas, worked at a BBQ place in HS, I have never heard of Mac n Cheese with BBQ. Potato salad, macaroni salad, sure, but Mac n Cheese? Maybe I'm missing out on something?

It might be an east coast, deep south thing rather than a mid-west thing. If only we knew a true BBQ aficionado who could come in and drop some knowledge on us about this.

Normally I'm defending Texas barbecue against some pretentious %^&*@! who thinks the form begins and ends in Memphis. Good to know the same dbags exist regardless of regional preference.

Being from Los Angeles, I would kill for halfway decent TX, Memphis or NC style BBQ. We don't have jack ish out here except for a few places in the hood.
