Don't you guys have good local burger places that blow away 5 Guys, Fudruckers, etc.?
No. Every time someone tells me you have to go to "xxxxx, they have the best burgers" I try them out and always leave disappointed. Too many gimmicks to try and be the best. Local magazines and papers list best burger places, and they're mediocre at best. I can grill some 80% ground beef with no seasoning and throw it on a potato roll and it's better than almost all of these "best burger" places. I will drive 20 miles to Fudruckers if I really want the best burger. I think the bun might be the most important part of the burger and theirs is perfect. The toppings are prepared exactly how I like (shredded lettuce, diced onions, hot liquid cheese). Just outstanding.

Couple kids from my son's soccer team wanted to go out after their game the other day. So we all went to Red Robin (let the kids choose).

Their normal burgers are average and overpriced.

Got the tavern double (without the thousand island crap).

It was actually pretty good. More like a good greasy bar burger.

6.99 with the bottomless fries.

Not great...but still tasty and at a good price.

I think our place is one of these.

Frankly, destroying 5G is our main goal when it comes to burgers. I think 5G has a nice burger, and I think the lesson from them is that a basic solid burger has gotten a little more difficult to find over the years. They are taking an 80/20 chuck patty (though I wouldn't be shocked if they are using 70/30 beef) and grilling it fresh. It's very simple, but with probably 8 out of 10 burgers sold in the US being of the "pre-cooked, heaven knows what kind of filler is mixed in" variety it seems damn near revolutionary.

5G arose when the burger landscape was, in many places, either fast food burgers or "pub style" burgers from either chains and highish end local places charging an arm and a leg because they throw it on a brioche bun with some aioli and smoked gouda.

While I think there's a certainly a place for the latter, I think there's a huge market in between these two. Solid burgers grilled to order. 80/20 chuck with some simple seasoning, a nice light char from a flat-top, not overcooked, on a nice bun is pretty damn good and doesn't need a whole lot of help.

Anyway, we are using the same formula as 5G, generally, though we use a much better bun (though still not fru-fru), don't overcook them like 5G can sometimes (unless our resident old lady happens to be near the grill by accident), a little less expensive (thank God beef prices are way down), and our place is a whole hell of a lot more fun that 5G. I suspect we are using the same type of beef (80/20 choice chuck) and patty size (1/3rd lb), though again, I can't say for certain 5G isn't going a hair cheaper or smaller. We also have a full lunch and breakfast menu alongside the burgers, with more burger options and toppings.

There is one local place that has a particularly huge burger following going a similar route. Their burger is inferior to ours in a number of ways, though, I might be biased.

Can someone tell me about Culvers?

Haven't seen a mention in here.
I've driven by ours a million times and just went there a few weeks ago. It's pretty good burgers, chicken etc. Fries are good too. Primary thing you miss out on if you don't go is the frozen custard. Ridiculously good.

This place is on my to try list.
I like the concrete mixer with chocolate chip cookie dough, or with marshmallow and bananas...kinda glad I'm not near one anymore because that stuff is addictive.

Culver's is meh all around to me. Very forgetable. There was one right around the corner from my old work. I went two or three times as an easy option to McD's when I didn't have time and really didn't want McD's.

If you have to go there again, try a Red Robin Cheeseburger with relish.

I think it is only in Chicago but there is a place called Buona Beef. I always kind of thought of it as a lesser version of Portillo's.

However.... I went a few months back on a lunch break. They have a Grilled Chicken Avocado Jack sandwhich. Freaking amazingly awesome. Basically what it says there with onions, mayo and some fried jalapeno things on it. One of my favorite chicken sandwhiches I have had anywhere.

Can I get a Pollards Burger in 5 minutes?

Do you have one of those fancy flavored pop machines?
Yeah, it takes right about 5 minutes.

No fancy flavored pop machines. I think those things cost about 1/5th of the value of our entire restaurant. Just a 5 head fountain. I looked into just trying to get some damn Mello Yello (though I'd greatly prefer Sun Drop), but that would take a minor construction project to pull off.

Even if it required a whole new building, it'd be worth it to get sundrop in the door....just sayin'

Agreed. We heard about it from friends but the only location was a bit away so we went there one rainout weekend recently. I'd never go back. It was just OK. I've had a couple just OK burgers at Five Guys, but the average burger and fries was much better than Culvers. My wife and kids thought the same. We all just said it was OK but we would never go there again. Not worth a 20 minute trip.

had a smashburger recently and it was great.....side of spicy fries (franks red hot sauce in powder form on them)...

tgif actually has decent burgers the last few times I went

just a basic cheeseburger with bacon but fkn delicious

sweet potato fries were good too

also their Tuesday $3 any pint is pretty ####### good with their 25 beers on tap

Beer 88 menu looks good. BBQ bacon wrapped meatballs? Wow, yes please. Also like the Hardywood selections

And jesus the prices are cheap!!

Good to know. I've driven passed the one in Bolingbrook a hundred times and never stopped. I'll have to check it out

Burger Fi is damn damn good and their fries and onion rings are incredibly delicious.

It's my go to burger joint in South Florida.
We have one in Virginia (Leesburg). I've heard good things about this place but never made the trek (about 45 minutes away).
Well that is a long way for burger and fries. But if your in that area for other reasons I would highly suggest you eat there.

It's pretty awesome.
