Not exclusive to football or even sports. Lots of financially successful jackasses out there who dont get fired because they are good at getting results.HS football is an odd bird. well, football in general but especially starting in HS.
are you a star player? do whatever you want
are you a marginal player but start? you have limitations but the punishment won't be terrible
are you on the bench? you better ####### toe the line absolutely perfectly in every way imaginable or your sports playing days are over, period
coaches and admin's find a way to make excuses if you're good. if you're not... too bad. suck it up and take the consequences.
if your kid is serious about football & is on the margin, better to send them to practice. if they're a star, go do some donuts on the coaches lawn and sniff coke off his daughter's ta-ta's before kickoff.. you'll be fine.
My wife and I have actually singled out the week of Labor Day 2-3 years from now to pull our kids out of school and hit Europe for ~10 days. So I guess me, I do.I don't see anything controversial about that but who books a family vacation for labor day?
And what's wrong with Six Flags? Kids love it. I personally would never go if not for the kids but that like 90% of the places I take my kids.
What Cjw said. Also, I don't think this is universal and depends on the coach/program. I've also seen this in other high school sports (ie, every high school sport my kids have played in). I have seen other programs not do things this way, but those are usually the programs that aren't any good. I don't say that to imply a cause and effect, but that if a program is terrible, they have less/no reason to cater to head cases.HS football is an odd bird. well, football in general but especially starting in HS.

Six Flags is a good place to get your kids killed by gang violence or perhaps catch the plague.
Exactly. Skip the crowds.Love it. I know we just had 3 months off from school, but we're gonna need a few extra days to check out Europe.
Is this high school? The local HS team here started the same day and had its only scrimmage last Saturday morning. The first game is this Friday. As a varsity coach, I can share my inisght
We start pre season on Aug 19. That is 2 weeks before school. I have a 3 day tryout where we dont work on any tactics.
So I then have 3 days before our first pre season scrimmage. we can debate having a scrimmage so early, but the best way to see what is wrong with your tactics is playing vs others.
So next week I have scrimmages on M, W and F. That leaves Tues and Thurs to fix problems from M and W. We already have a scrimmage on Saturday morning. No way I can give them 3 days off in a row. If they are already around on Sat, chances are they have no plans. And they shouldnt since everyone knew the schedule.
Our first game is on Thursday Sept 5th. So all in all we have few enough practices as is. We need to go Monday. I have it early and short, but its needed.
Although, I like the idea of going later for those families that do want to do something after the scrimmage Sat. Might do that. Think Nigel suggested it thx

Why so many scrimmages?
Not for my son. They have Sat and Sun off after Friday night games. Those kids that are banged up go in for treatment/PT on Sat morning and they are expected to watch game film which is posted online sometime on Saturday but typically they have weekends off. Our school got rid of varsity reserve Saturday games a few years ago.Actually, there would be football Saturday morning as well. Coaches like to keep routines as much as possible.
A typical week might look something like this...
M - Review scouting report, Introduce game plan, walk through game plan, run/weight room
T - Heavy Defense (Individual drills, group drills, team D), Team Offense, film of opponent
W - Heavy Offense (Individual drills, group drills, team O), Team Defense, film of opponent
Th - Team O, Team D, all special teams, team dinner
F - game night
S - Watch game film, run/weight room
Su - off
I get the bonus of having the day off, but to me, this does not seem to be an effective strategy for use of game film. Watching and having dialogue with the coaches regarding the details and nuances of what shows up on the game film has real value to it. We do have Saturday JV games with 10 AM start times. Varsity kids come in and are generally done by 10 AM.Not for my son. They have Sat and Sun off after Friday night games. I'm sure they do some film study as a group. I'm not a coach and I don't ask my son on what they do at all their practices. I just know they typically don't do much on weekends and he spends some time watching film on his own. Maybe that's his call and they watch again on Mondays I don't know. I could be misremembering it too as our first game is coming up this weekend. Even if they did have Sat AM film study my point still stands about preferring a Monday afternoon practice on Labor Day as opposed to am. You still have almost 2 full days with the afternoon practice even with Sat am football activities.I get the bonus of having the day off, but to me, this does not seem to be an effective strategy for use of game film.
