Footballguys is hiring (1 Viewer)

Cathy Fazio

Token Chick
We are looking for recappers for the upcoming 2006 season. Game recaps are an integral part of the inseason content, and the information written about specific players is included in our player pages.

For an example of what we are looking for, here is a great example from the 2005 season: Sample recap

If you are interested, please watch any preseason game, write up a recap and send it to me at fazio@footballguys.com, preferably as a word document. Also being sure to note if you have NFL Sunday ticket and if not, what market you are in or teams you could cover on a regular basis.

If you have any questions, please feel free to pm me or send me an email.

This is a solid way to "break in" to being a writer here.

Plus, how cool would it be to say that you "get paid to watch football games"?

I'm all-in for the Bucs :) .

FMI, how will competing game recaps work? Say you have a guy covering the Bucs and a guy covering the Ravens. Well since they play week 1, will you have two writeups?

Or are you planning on hiring a set of 12 guys and having them divy up the games each week?

Someone please clarify for me the difference in what I "should" know and what I "ought" to know.

I love FBG but I've never understood the use of these two words to differentiate the two sections of the game recaps.

Birdy,I've always understood is as a difference in the level of detail. "Should" know is a basic summary while "ought" to know goes into a bit more detail.

 The job isn't easy. But I did it for an entire season and it really can beef up your writing chops.
Can we get a little more definition on the word "hire"? I do have a family to consider so money does come into play and would help justify my "habit", I mean "work"!

What I tell the recappers is that the Need to Know section are the main points from the game. Usually the major things that any fantasy owner would need to take away - totals, trends, injuries, etc. The Ought to Know section breaks down the game by player and position and goes into more detail on the how and why a player performed great or poorly or mediocrely. Those are the player summaries that get linked to in the Player Pages.

PM sent.
Can I get a look at that PM too? I used to write for Xpert Sports, and Fantasy Asylum before that, and I would be interested in picking it up again.

Like JDogg said, it isn't easy. It does take a time commitment to crank one of those out every week, but it is very rewarding to see your work up on the WWW.

The hardest part? Being objective towards your favorite team/players when they stink up the joint. :towelwave:

Just joined the forums after finding out about this opportunity from the daily email Joe Bryant sends out. I’d like to find out any additional details if possible. Cathy will you please send me the PM you’ve sent to the others? Thank you very much.

Good luck and welcome.

I am incredibly interested in this. I'm not the most experienced, but I've written a few very detailed, nearly play-by-play descriptions of play off games, including the NFC Championship game between Carolina and Seattle.

I'd like to see that PM as well. Thanks a ton.

Like others I just found out about this opportunity from the email Joe sends out, and I am interested. I also look forward to being part of this site. I just discovered you all recently, and it looks like a great forum.

Cathy could you please PM me the information others have requested? It's not so much the money, but rather the justification that I need to give to my wife.

Also, what is the deadline after a game is completed to get the piece in? 12 hours, 1 day, etc.?

Thanks.

I would like more information via a PM and also whether or not the Dolphins or Falcons are already represented.

I'm asking very nicely for details, please. :P

Seriously, though, I'm really interested. Details, pretty please? 0=)

Cathy, I am very interested in this. Could you please send me the PM you sent the others with more details? I plan to do a recap for a pre-season Week 2 game.

I would really like the details as well. If you will please include me in sharing those details I'd appreciate it. Thank you so much.

In the interest of not having to pm multiple people, here is what I have been sending out. All of your questions in order to decide whether or not this is something you would like to pursue should be answered here.

And please especially note the last line. I will not be able to look at any of the submissions until the week of August 28th.

Thanks for your interest in the game recap positions.

What you need to do is watch a preseason game and send me a sample recap at fazio@footballguys.com. In your sample, you do not need to include the stat line or target information in the What You Should Know section per each individual player you write about. I would prefer if the recap was sent as a word document. Also, in your email, let me know what market you are in and whether or not you have NFL Sunday Ticket.

The game recaps pay $20.00 per recap. We pay once at the end of the regular season for all recaps submitted. Also included is a comped subscription to the site.

I have more recappers than games on any given weekend. So not everyone will cover a game every week. But I am careful that things get evened out throughout the season. Games are assigned on a weekly basis. I send out the schedule for the week on Tuesday morning.

Recaps are due by Monday at 5 am EST, that is when Joe and I begin the editing process. If you have been assigned a night game, that time is flexible, and the recap should be in by noon EST.

I will be gone next week on vacation, so I won’t be able to look at your submission until the week of August 28th.

Please pm me if your ever hiring people to drink way too much and make loudmouth comments.

I have references if you need them.

Is the site considered upping that fee? Is it negotiable?

I would guess not.

For the sample recap do you want mention of all players of just the starters? As you can imagine the stat line for these preseason games are much longer then usual and the info on each player is minimal. Please clarify what you meant by this "In your sample, you do not need to include the stat line or target information in the What You Should Know section per each individual player you write about." Thank you, im excited about helping out with this.

In the sample recap, you will notice that in the What You Should Know section, next to each players' name is a line that breaks down their stats for the game and includes targets if appropriate. You do not have to include that information when you submit a recap. Thanks to Doug Drinen, that info is pulled into the recaps when they are written to the site. We do count targets, but that is not necessary for your sample as well. As far as how many players you include, it would depend on how long they play. If a starter only plays one series, I am not going to get a good idea of your writing abilities should you just mention that. The sample should average to be around 1500 - 2000 words and that should give you a guideline when writing it.

This is alot more time and effort then i thought it would be. Hardly seems worth $20,add in watching the game and youll only getting about $3 per hour.

The value comes from a lot of different angles. First off, you're getting published. I'm going into my second year as a recapper, and I've noticed it helps me focus on critical aspects of the game, from both a fantasy and overall football perspective. Its also a solid incentive to leverage your football knowledge and FF expertise in a concrete way. Plus, there is something incredibly cool about pounding coffee at 3 AM after MNF to meet your deadline. Closest I'll ever get to journalism for sure. Also, its nice to spend the end of season money on the lady friend--it keeps me and football on stable ground.I highly recommend this...not as a financial investment, but as a way to invest in FF and FBGs, and ultimately yourself.
