Footballguys Magazine iPad Application (1 Viewer)

DetroitDragons

Footballguy
Good Morning,

I have heard talk of the impending release of the Footballguys Magazine iPad Application on the Audible.

Also read a recent with FBG Dodds discussing the release as one of the most anticipated and exciting upgrades offered for FBGs subscribers for the 2012 season.

Has there been a published release date or is there a string with additional details.

Searched forms for 'iPad' and did not see anything relevant.

Sounds like a merge/upgrade from the FBG Mobile iPhone app and MyFBGs.

Looking forward to the release.

Thanks for all the effort.

i dont have a definite date but I know it's happening soon. the writers just passed deadlines for the Ipad app. Stay tuned!

Am I the only one left that doesn't have an iPad?
i would say 80% of us dont have a iPad
I would say more of us probably have Android-based devices than iPhones/iPads. LISTENING, FBGS?
Quick google search found this as the second result. Doesn't give total numbers but sure makes it sound like you guys have it backwards..."Case in point: during the weekend launch of the new iPad Apple sold over 3 million iPads. How many Android tablets have been activated in the entire history of tablets? 12 million. Meaning Apple sold more new iPads in just one weekend than a quarter of all the Android tablets in the world, ever. That’s absolutely astonishing, and the parity in the total number of iPads vs Android tablets is only going to grow wider this year."http://www.cultofmac.com/154846/apple-sold-more-new-ipads-in-one-weekend-than-25-of-all-android-tablets-ever/Granted, it's a pro-Mac website but all I've heard is that the growth curve of iPhones and iPads is still pretty darn steep heading upward. So this iPad user is looking forward to an iPad FBG magazine ;)ETA: found another page that says iPads owns the lion's share of the tablet market, albeit before the introduction of the kindle fire. Here's a quote:"In short: despite the rush of tablets that have come out in the past year, many built on Google’s Android OS, Apple has managed to continue to run away with the competition, and how has 73 percent of the tablet market. No Android tablet maker, it notes, has more than a 5 percent share against it."http://techcrunch.com/2012/03/05/forrester-no-android-tablet-has-more-than-5-share-vs-ipad-how-does-amazons-kindle-fire-compare/

Crazy talk. I'd guess phones are about 50/50 but tablets are more like 85% ipad , 10% Fires & 5% the rest.
Typical iFanboy. Don't know about tablets, but for phones:Smart Phone Market Share

Don't want to turn this into a Mac vs. the world thread, but I did post some info on iPad market share a few posts up if you care to look at those. Definitely seems to indicate a very large majority of the TABLET market is owned by the iPad. And this thread IS about a magazine for the IPAD after all.

This will be available for Android tablets as well. Sorry I did not see this earlier. Head down to make all of this happen.

Here is what I can tell you:

- Release date should be on or around June 24th. We don't know the exact date as it has to get approved through the Apple iTunes Store

- Think Fantasy Football magazine on Steroids. Whereas a magazine / Draft Guide will be 200-300 pages, our interactive iPad Magazine will be closer to 3,000 pages by the time August hits.

- This is all independent of a FBG subscription. It is a stand alone product and will sell for $4.99 in the iTunes and Android markets. Subscribers need not buy as all of the material will eventually be released to the subscription. We will likely put a coupon code in the app though to save on a FBG subscription if you did not purchase during the early-bird. If you purchased an early-bird subscription, you are not eligible for further discounts.

- Besides lots of great FBG content, Aaron Rudnicki and a few staffers are busy tagging the best free fantasy football content. It will also come through the app for easy access to this web-content.

- Our magazine will auto-update all summer long so you are never using old projections or rankings.

- You can customize your scoring in our magazine so that when you read articles like the Running Backs, these pages rearrange to the order as predicted by our latest projections and your scoring criteria.

- Sections covering Beginner, IDP, Injuries, Auction, Dynasty, High Stakes, Social Media, Interviews, Training Camps and more.

It is still in development, but you will also be able to switch into DRAFT mode and conduct a draft or Mock right within the magazine/app based on your scoring criteria. And after completing the mock...just hit one button to Rate Your Team.

I was lucky enough to win a lifetime subscription last year so this really doesn't affect me, but it still brought the question to my mind. Why would we spend the money on a subscription when we can get the app for a lot less. I realize that this does not have the in season stuff but FBG seems to be concentrating a lot more on the mobile apps and passing up on other tools.Just my .02 and just wondering.

On this note as well, is FBG going to make the magazine available right on the site to save the 30% or so that iTunes will take? Some app creators are making their apps available in other ways other than on iTunes for this reason.

Making some serious progress on this. Here is the latest after talking with Joe.

We are going to sell it for $4.99. It will not contain any coupon codes for a discount on a FBG subscription.

For people asking why not just buy this instead of the subscription. For some that could certainly be a solution. The app will not include everything we do in the preseason. For example the app will have 5 spotlights at launch and then get another 5 during the preseason. The site will have 100+ spotlights. The app will have one Perfect Draft article. The site will have many variations of this, etc. The app will not have any in-season content. The site releases 89 features a week to subscribers. The app will not have any of the Dominator products, etc. The app will not have access to the Data Dominator, Game Log Dominator, Fantasy Schedules, etc. It's simply a magazine on steriods.

David--Any thoughts on having a separate offering of the DraftDominator on the iPad? That would be awesome?

I thought this might have been a different stand alone product but if you are a subscriber it doesn't seem like there is any reason to buy this .

Hi Bob,The Draft Mode app for the iPad Magazine will definitely be less powerful than the full blown Draft Dominator for the PC or Mac. It'll be cool on the iPad but it won't have the power or the flexibility that the the Draft Dominator has. I think people will LOVE it though. For guys that truly do want a real Draft Dominator for their iPad, you'll need to use a remote access program for your iPad where it links to your desktop machine that is running Draft Dominator. Bruce Henderson wrote directions on how to do that. Let me dig them up.Bottom line though, the iPad Magazine plans to have a fantastic Draft Mode app built into it. It will not be as powerful or flexible as the Desktop version of the Draft Dominator, but we think it'll be excellent.J

Joe or David: Can you comment on this? I'm reading things the same way that there's no reason to buy the app if you're already a subscriber other than the possibility of it being better formatted for the tablet or maybe the mock draft mode?

I can see an argument for that. If you've already purchased a FBG Insider subscription, you can view the FBG Insider on your iPad through the Safari browser just like you'd see any other website. The difference is that the iPad magazine will be formatted exclusively for the iPad with lots of cool iPad only style features swiping and such. The Draft Mode will be something the iPad has that the regular FBG Insider subscription doesn't have. We'll have screenshots and such when it releases so folks can see exactly. Bottom line is yes, it's maybe a bit of overkill if you purchase the FBG Insider subscription as it's really just cooler ways to view some of the same info. But if it comes out like we're hoping, it's going to be REALLY cooler ways to view some of the same info. I know if it were me, I'd easily spring the $4.99 to be able to see it both ways. J

I think the purpose of the app isn't to get subscribers to pony up the $4.99. The purpose of the app is to get non-subscribers to pony up the $4.99 in the hopes that they like the limited content that they pay for a full subscription on the site.

Then why not give subscribers free access to the app? Then you'd have even more people that have "bought in" to the FBG concept in total telling their friends how great all aspects are.

Why would they do that? They have your subscription paid for already. A good percentage of those that are willing to pay for the full site will be willing to pay for the app just to have the cool features of "swiping" as David put it. Perhaps not everyone, but even if 10-20% are willing to put the coin down for the app (on top of the regular subscription), that's 10-20% that they wouldn't have had if they gave it away for free to subscribers and there will be close to 0% dropoff of people going from full 1 year subscriptions to app only clients. I don't doubt that it's a cool way to look at things FBG related, but I'm not going to put down $4.99 for it, especially since the iPad has terrific web integration. I'll just go to the site. However, $4.99 is a good entry level cost to get people interested in the world of FBG (some people may not even know what FBG is before they see the app) so people then wander of here, look at the forums and perhaps 50%+ of them are going to be willing to drop cash on a 1 year subscription. That's the end game. Increase full price subscriptions and those not willing to drop money on a full price subscription now have an option of paying $4.99 for limited features. That's $4.99 more than $0.00 which is a win/win for FBG.

When it comes to Fantasy Football, I have no friends. I wouldn't let them know what tool I use to beat them in my league. This is my ace in the hole compared to the magazine drafters in my $$ league.I'll always be silent about FBG in my FF circles even if they divulge that they are subscribers here.

10-20% of all subscribers or 10-20% of those with tablets? I'm guessing it would be the latter...very specifically for the reasons you stated about being able to get to the site on tablets anyway. My point is that you are making some marginal profit off of those that are already supporting you on their current plan. Instead, you could forsake that marginal profit and give the app to the subscribers gratis. The reasons to do this are A.) increased satisfaction levels on the part of your current paying customer base (probably close to 100% of those with tablets would see this as a plus and be happier because of it), and B.) you have people that are already pro-FBG that will likely enjoy the app and become emissaries among their peers who are potential customers which will probably generate MORE sales/profit in the long run than the amount you would have made by charging and getting only 10-20% on board. You sacrifice some dollars now for more dollars later and a broadened customer base while at the same time strengthening the bond with your current loyal customers, which can't be understated. It costs a lot more to get new customers than to keep existing ones. This is a prime example.

Exactly what I was thinking (well not as well put, but hey)...bottom line if just one out of every 5.5 subscribers was annoyed that they do not get this feature and have to pay another $4.99 and DON'T subscribe to the site next year, it will all be a wash anyway. I don't have an iPad (my wife does) and I don't even know what "swiping" is, so as a subscriber, I will not be one to buy it, and am fine with what I get from the subscription (so bottom line is, I could care less), but if I did have an iPad, maybe I would think differently.

If you don't have an iPad you are missing out. .....and if your #####ing about the cost skip your latte tomorrow and you can afford the app.

if i dont buy a subscription and only buy the ipad app will i get any of the following:

IDP articles (eyes of the guru etc)

weekly projections

weekly cheatsheets

game recaps

check team status for FBG contests

Hi Fiddles,The iPad Magazine will only cover the preseason content. It will stop once the regular season starts. Also to be clear, the contests like the $35,000 Subscriber Contest will only be available to folks that buy the regular Footballguys Insider subscription. J

First off, big ups to you Joe for not resting on your laurels and dedicating the time and resources to develop this app and advantage of emerging technologies and platforms. Just another reason I blindly renew my FBG subscription every three years. And anyone who owns an iPad but complains that subscribers have to pay for a new tool that Joe & Co. took a risk developing needs to take an intro to business class. That out of the way, how bare bones is the draft component going to be? All I really need is to load teams & draft order, plug in scoring system to calculate rankings/VBD, and be able manually select guys to come off the board. All the other DD bells & whistles are nice, but that would be enough for me and I'm sure 99% of iPad owners.

Making some serious progress on this. Here is the latest after talking with Joe.We are going to sell it for $4.99.
Thanks Tom. The honest answer is that remains to be seen. We're hard at work putting the final touches on the Draft Mode. It won't have the computing horsepower (or development on our part) to be as robust as the DD but I think people will love what we come up with. Stay tuned and thanks for the good words.J

If you don't have an iPad you are missing out. .....and if your #####ing about the cost skip your latte tomorrow and you can afford the app.
Great Post! My sentiments exactly! You get what you pay for. Make a choice
How about when you pay for a full subscription at FBG and a lot of the staff resources are pulled away to work on an app that you'll be unable to use? (no iPad)I'm happy that iPad users are being charged for the app. Hopefully those revenues go towards paying for extra staffing or extra hours. Otherwise, it's taking away from the website content that I'm already paying for.I'm not complaining though...I think the little contests/games that go on before/through the season are enough to jsutify the yearly subscription cost. Though I'd prefer to see the staff working on something we can all use.
