Updating a previous item, Adam Schefter, of ESPN, reports Pittsburgh Steelers LB Larry Foote will earn $3.9 million in the first year of his three-year deal.

What does that do for Timmons owners? I would think he is the odd man out in this deal.... They must not be too thrilled with him...

I was comfortably ready to argue that Foote's signing was to provide some veteran depth and flexibility -- and it may be -- but the 9+ million over three years is giving me pause. The fact that Foote had other suitors than the Steelers and is coming back to a situation he seemed happy to leave this time last year seems fishy, too. I don't think Foote is clearly better than Timmons on early downs at this point in their respective careers and I don't think James Farrior is yet in danger either. But there may be more to this one.

As a Levy owner in every league, this news made me very happy.As a Timmons owner in many leagues, this made me slightly concerned.

A quick excerpt from the Post-Gazette this morning, but the whole article is worth a look.

But, like all the other unrestricted free agents signed since last Monday, Foote is not projected to be a starter and was told he will back up Timmons at his old spot.

However, the Steelers are looking at Foote as insurance in case Farrior, who turned 35 in January, continues to show more signs of decline in training camp.

"Don't start wasting your paper about me replacing Farrior," Foote said. "I'm here to rejuvenate him. If I'm here I want him to be here, no doubt about it. Him being here was a big reason why I wanted to come back. I'm just here to give depth and help us win somehow, someway.

"I'm quite sure I'm going to play. The amount I don't know. Right now Timmons and Farrior are the starters. I'm glad to be back and the football part will take care of itself."
