for those in point for 1st down leagues (or anyone w/ an opinion) (1 Viewer)

the idea of giving a point for earning 1st downs (for non-QBs) is being batted around in my league and i thought id seek the opinions of those of you that have been in leagues that use the rule (or anyone else w/ an opinion). My league currently gives 6 points for TDs for all positions (including QBs) and no one is in favor of reducing QB TDs to 4 points, so point per 1st down was proposed as an alternative. This rule would be in addition to points that are awarded for yardage, but for non-QBs only.

I never been in a league that awards points for 1st downs ... so i dont' know how many more points a player would earn on average, which position(s) this favors etc. ANy thoughts on the subject are greatly appreciated

Here's the reasons why to go for this:

Points Per Deception

Basically this avoids the PPR issue of a RB or WR catching a meaningless catch for 0-2 yards but getting a point for that.

Breaking it down in the article, it is about 2:1 in favor for WRs to get a point vs. RBs.

see .. that's what i was thinking, that it would give a boost to WRs (and even TEs). And how many 1st downs would a player get in game? 3? maybe 4? It's not like WRs and TEs are suddenly going to be the biggest scorers in the league. And as far as from a "enjoyment" standpoint, wouldn't it give extra importance to the already important 3rd down? I mean, every 4th play is a potential "point play".

I think i'd support this rule but too manyowners are worried about the repercussions that it could drastically alter the scoring heirarchy of the league. I dont' agree with this thought

I'd vote for it in my league. What service are you using that provides the data?
I put this feature in my league 4 years ago and it works great. It is a stat on CBS.Now I do not give RB's the 1 pt per 1st down reception, only WR and TE, although we do have special other bonus categories for RBs for gains > 20 and > 40 yards, plus rushing average. This coupled with the Super Flex (can start a 2nd QB) has really done a nice job in "levelizing" values amongst QB, WR and RBs.I highly recommend it, plus it eliminates the "reward" of a 4 yard out pass on a 3rd and 7 situation.

Our league awards points for first downs. When your RB gains 1 yard on a 3rd and 1 or (even better) a 4th and 1 carry, it means something to his team. Furthermore, he isn't focusing on breaking a long one, but only on getting across that invisible yellow stripe. If he succeeds, it should be worth something.
