For those waiting on qb, what tier is your qb2? (1 Viewer)

for those waiting on qb and getting someone in the ben/freeman/schaub/ryan/bradford/stafford/eli range, do you plan on soon drafting another one of these (qbbc) or do you plan on relying on qb1 all year (solidifying depth at rb/wr)?

i guess i'm asking if this tier is worth relying on all season for productivity or should you play it safe and get a couple of these guys to play matchups or in case of injury. i think ben and freeman may be in their own tier above the rest so you could rely on just having one of them, but interested in what the pool thinks.

Confident in: Ben, Freeman, Ryan

Need to grab another solid QB: Schaub, Stafford, Eli, Stafford

Short of needing to back up Stafford twice (jk), that's how I see it too. I would be on the edge with Schaub. I would probably say I'd be a little less aggressive with him.

In my opinion it reeally depends on how confident/strong you are at your other positions. I'll tell you this, four teams made the playoffs in one of my leagues last year. the QBs in the p-offs were Rogers, Ryan, Schaub and Eli (though ironically Freeman was used in the finals)

Personally Stafford is the only one I would reeally shy away from and that is only becasue of the injury concerns.

I think that if you're able to get 2 of these QBs, then you'll be in good shape. In the mocks I've done, you can usually go QB in both rounds 7 and 8 and end up with 2 of these guys.

A lot is of course dependent on your league's scoring and your league-mates' tendencies.

Depends on when everyone else is grabbing their QB2s. If they are going earlier than I like (rounds 8-10), I might just forego a QB2 to start the year, preferring to make a trade or work the ww later, even if I get a riskier QB1. I'm actually more likely to burn a decent pick on a QB2 if I landed an elite QB early. My thought process is that if I take a QB later, I've decided to build the strength of my team elsewhere and I'd rather have a handcuff to my star RB than a middling back-up QB. But if I burned an early pick, I need a better QB2 to protect my heavier investment.

This might make more sense if the only risk associated with your QB1 were injury. But when you take your QB1 late, you get the added risk of poor production, making it more likely that you'll need a productive QB2. For this reason--and others--you should take your QB2 earlier if you wait on QB1.

I am of the notion to plug and chug, meaning, get your guy, start him every week and roll. You should draft your QB1 as your guy you will be playing every week. If he is not good enough for that, you probably waited too long or drafted the wrong guy. The guys you list are of the plug and chug type, you are talking 1 fp diff per week avg. Once you start overthinking, your QB on your bench blows up, you start that guy the next week and he bombs. You then kick him back to the bench he blows up, repeat nightmare all season long.

Agree with this. It's extremely difficult to play matchups with QBs.

I'd put Eli in the "confident" category, but otherwise I agree. In my redraft league QB1s tend to go early and it's based in Detroit. So unless I get Vick or Rodgers at the #10-14 range, I will probably end up waiting as others fill their QBs. In that case I'll aim to get two of Freeman, Eli, Flacco and Cutler.

IMO that's only true if your QB1 is a risky pick. Eli IMO is the ideal value - solid QB who many will wait on because he isn't elite and doesn't appear to have huge "upside"

I think a lot will depend on league scoring. But if you look at ppg totals across the past two seasons, here's what things look like:

1 Aaron Rodgers 24.25

2 Drew Brees 22.60

3 Peyton Manning 21.61

4 Ben Roethlisberger 21.52

5 Philip Rivers 21.08

6 Tom Brady 21.04

7 Tony Romo 20.81

8 Matt Schaub 20.34

9 Eli Manning 18.99

10 Kurt Warner 18.86

11 Donovan McNabb 18.77

12 Kyle Orton 18.37

13 David Garrard 18.36

14 Jay Cutler 17.98

15 Matt Ryan 17.71

16 Matthew Stafford 17.31

17 Joe Flacco 17.01

18 Carson Palmer 16.89

19 Brett Favre 16.79

20 Josh Freeman 16.70

I realize that those numbers have limited usefullness, as a lot has changed in two seasons and many of those guys are in completely different situations. The bigger the sample size, it seems like the tiers become more defined. I still would be happy to have any of the top 8 listed here (plus Vick) with a fair amount of confidence. After that, the dropoff in playing someone else might be just cause for concern IMO.
