Ford Fusion is a POS (1 Viewer)

Insoxicated
Was rear ended a couple weeks ago and finally have my car in the shop. They (enterprise) gave me a Ford Fusion as a rental during this period. I had never driven one, but having heard Ford's big advertising push about how "surprisingly good" their cars are.... I was down to give it a shot.

It took about 5 minutes in the drivers seat of this thing before I was tempted to turn it around and demand something else. Zero acceleration, droning engine noise, poorly laid out chintzy plastic interior, craptastic suspension.... there are pretty much zero redeeming qualities to this car. Hell, my Nokia phone 10 years ago had a nicer screen than the in dash backup camera.

I'm not sure what sort of ruse Ford is trying to pull here.... but this thing sucks.

my neighbor who is a giant right wing flag waving blowhard got a Fusion because America #### Yeah, without doing the research that it's 99.9% built in Mexico and they bring it thru Michigan for basically floor mats and a quick once over.

It just looks like it could fall apart at any second.

Their trucks are great.  Big believer in their trucks, whomever and however they make them.

We're a Ford family. Love my Explorer, wifey loves her Escape and we owned a Taurus years ago. But I've heard bad things about the Fusion. My Uncle owned one briefly and he hated it too.

I actually got online and read a review on Car & Driver that was pretty glowing about ergnomics, suspension, etc.... pretty much everything that sucks about this car. I was confused until I realized they were reviewing the "platinum" edition which is pretty well loaded out. There must be some pretty dramatic differences between the (likely) base model I have, and the high end model.... or that review was blatantly bought and paid for.

Keep in mind I'm coming from a Jeep Wrangler and a Hyundai for comparison here.. it's not like I'm expecting to be carted around in a 7 series. This thing truly is just a giant turd.

I also wonder if they sell the absolute stripped down version to rent car companies.  I usually drive Chevy Malibus when I travel and wonder who the hell would ever buy this thing as well.

Drove an Edge as a rental when I was in Milwaukee.  Thought it was a nice ride.  No experience with Fusion.

You're surprised a base model 4-cyl fleet car isn't very impressive?

Most Ford trucks sold in the US are made in their Kentucky Truck Plant (in Louisville iirc).

Super dutys are from Louisville. F-150 are from Kansas City (which is really Claycomo) and the old mustang plant (now dearborn truck)

I had one as a rental over Labor Day weekend and wasn't crazy about it. I think it looks good from the outside but I wasn't feeling the layout of all the controls (entertainment, climate, etc.). And I agree that it had no acceleration.

Yeah, the outside styling is actually pretty decent, especially for a car at this price point.

Which one got rear-ended and how bad was the damage?

I spend a decent amount of time in rental cars. Presumably many are "base-model fleet" cars.

This one is particularly unimpressive.

There are 2 turbo charged Fusion engines - you probably got the naturally aspirated 2.5L base engine.  The 2.0L EcoBoost has plenty of torque.

The 2017 is taking me a bit to get used to as it has a knob instead of a traditional gear shift.   My titanium is quite nice, but I am not a fan of mid-sized sedans in general.

I travel a couple times a month for work and get 1-2 rental cars a month - most are base level turds.  I had a Sonata in Nashville that did nothing for me, but it beat the Camry I got in Jackson, MS.

A few former co-workers had them.  I thought they were fine   much better than my focus

Brother has a Taurus which is pretty nice

So in summary I'm shocked that a rental car sucked

Genesis got hit. Damage seems to be contained to the bumper. The infinity that hit me had a lot more damage (was barely driveable).

That must be the case. It sure SOUNDS like it's doing work when I hit the gas... but it doesn't actually seem to translate to any sort of acceleration.

Wonder if it is fleet sales?   Rented a Camry in California last month and it was total garbage.  Having never driven one and hearing reviews I was expecting much better.  It only had 22K miles and besides being very plain it was a rattle trap.  Slow acceleration and handled like a truck.  It did have nice leg rom though.

But when we have a pole about buying a rental car people tend to be ok with it.  I think they're nuts.

I got a 2016 Fusion last September and I love it.  I got the turbo and loaded it up, leather seats, navigation, bigger nicer wheels, etc.  so far, so good for me.

I would never buy a rental.  I drive one like my own car but I have buddies who think because it is a rental the floor it off every light, clip curbs without caring and basically have total disregard for the vehicle.

Was given a series of Ford cars for work over the years.. the Fusion and the Edge were both great.  Drove 2 each 2008-2014.

In the past year I've rented two Malibus, a Fusion and I think a Cruze. To be honest, all were completely forgettable. That's rentals for ya.

Got stuck with one 2 times recently while on travel... My opinion of the Fusion being the car of the idiots that used to drive Pontiac G cars (G6, Gran Prix, Grand Am) all now drive proves to be true, however the car handles so bad is such an overall steaming piece of ... that maybe there is another reason...

Got stuck in a rental one of these for work a while back.  I'll never drive one again.  I'd rather drive a Yugo.

Same exact cars for me over the last year but add the Camry.  I hated the Cruze and Fusion, was meh on the Malibu, but really like the Camry.  That and the fact that I've got connections with the local Toyota dealership who got me a great deal, led me to buy a Camry.

Yea, I have a 2014 Fusion as a company car, and it's a pretty basic version.  It's completely uninspiring to drive.  It seems to handle basic A to B okay, but there is nothing remotely interesting about driving it.  Of course, it does have the smallest of engine choices, and not the Ecoboost.  We used to have Tauruses as company cars and they were much more enjoyable to drive.  If my daughter's 2007 Acura TL is around, I'm much more inclined to take that out for my errands.

I had one of these once and thought it was the biggest POS around and I'm usually a "Chevy" guy.  A guy at work got one for a commuter here and it was like a completely different car with the version he bought

My daughter just bought a Fusion Hybrid in December, she loves it. We took it on a 9 1/2hr trip recently and it was pretty awesome

My companies owner's wife drives a Fusion Hybrid, it is really nice, we also have a regular Fusion as a company car, not a great car.   They are two entirely different vehicles.

Every time I rent a compact car they are stripped down crap and usually brand new.   It amazing how a new car can feel like you are driving a tank.   Best two rentals I ever had were a Camry and Altima and both were hybrids.

I drive a 2012 Fusion. Pretty much the base version, so I got a great deal on it. Definitely has poor acceleration, but it rides smooth and quiet and gets good mileage. A great value in its class for those who aren't in a hurry.

They definitely do this with American cars and can't for the life of me understand why.  One of my friends has a Malibu that is pretty nice (not amazing by any means) and I've had a couple as rentals and they are total garbage.  I've also rented Camrys and they seem to be exactly the same as what you buy at a dealer.

The car gets good reviews in general.  I rented one with leather and all the fixings last year and thought it was great, rented a few stripped down versions that were OK.  I am not much for the Malibu or Impala, every time they try to give me one of those I ask for something else.  The Impala in particular is a huge piece of crap car, but my sister has one and thinks it's good.  Whatever, I drive a Honda Fit, what would I know?
