Bronco, Ranger return said to draw look

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. -- Ford is considering a revival of the Bronco sport utility vehicle and Ranger small pickup in the United States, where truck demand is booming, said a person familiar with company's plans.

The two models would be built at a Wayne, Mich., factory that now makes small cars, said the person, who asked not to be identified discussing product plans. The move would help Ford preserve some U.S. union jobs amid contract talks. The company may assemble the Focus and C-Max in Mexico, a person familiar with the matter had said.

"It's a good move," John Wolkonowicz, a Boston-based independent analyst, said of reviving the SUV. "Gen Y has discovered the original Bronco. Ford has seen what the Mustang can do for them, and they are bringing back their iconic names."

The Bronco debuted in 1966. It has become popular with millennials in Southern California, said Wolkonowicz, a former product planner for Ford. The new Bronco would be will be a midsize SUV, built on a pickup frame. Ford made its last Bronco in 1996 and ended Ranger production in 2011.
It was always odd to me that they abandoned the Ranger before.

For the Bronco, they are saying it will be a midsized SUV. How will this differ from their current lineup of SUV's/Crossovers? I wonder if they will end up not finding a niche for it.

My favorite vehicle to this day was my 1998 Ford Ranger Sport. Then I had to get stupid and get married and stuff.

Just rebadge the Explorer. Thats how they brought the Taurus back. I had a 2001 Ranger & got rid of it for a 2001 F150 4x4. Gas mileage is not much worse on the F150. Bigger is better.

Apparently the Bronco is going to be built off of a truck frame while the Explorer (IIRC) has it's own frame. Maybe that will go after the Bronco kind of being a Ford SUV version of a Jeep- really built for off-road rather than family alternative to mini-van that the Explorer basically is?

I had a 2003 Ranger and turned it in a couple of years later for my 2005 F-150. It was nice having the extra space etc and as you said there was not a overwhelming difference in MPG or anything else that made you want to go Ranger over F-150 other than a F-150 cost more. If they bring the Ranger back, they really need to show why it deserves to be bought in comparison to the F-150 for some reason.

Owned a few late 80's Bronco II's back in the day... THOSE were fun... but don't try to take a corner too quickly..

Also, on the manual transmission one, I could put it in first gear, hammer the gas, let off, and repeat.. I could get the front tires

bouncing off the ground. My dad kept asking what I was doing that kept trashing the driveshaft ... I was like

:lmao:

Just kill the explorer. Who the hell buys that anymore?
It was our second choice from the Traverse/Acadia/Enclave. We (I) did a lot of research and we test drove most direct (and a lot of indirect) competitors. We liked the Explorer but the Acadia we got ended up winning over because of being a bit safer and we liked the ride better.

We had close friends who were going to buy the Enclave and ended up buying the Explorer instead. Have not heard any complaints.

I see tons of them on the road too. So.... I guess a bunch of people do?

130K units through July, plus 15K for police use.

That's really shocking to me. I can't really remember the last time I've seen one that wasn't some beater from the late 90s barely hanging on and looking like the tires might explode at any time.

That Edge seems to be much more popular as is the expedition. Explorer just seems to be sort of in a no-mans land as far as size needs today.

What about the Pinto?
That would be awesome. I still remember picking ours up at the dealer. I had to be 3 or 4. It was our only vehicle for a family of five. We finally got rid of it when the floor rusted through and we could see the road below us as we drove. We were probably just lucky it lasted that long and we didn't die in a fiery explosion.

Exactly. 200K of a vehicle is pretty great sales in the fragmented market we work in today.

And this Bronco rumor comes around every few years. People love that old beast.

Also, on the Ranger. Keep in mind that it's currently still a vehicle built by Ford and sold all over the world. Just not here. Wouldn't be that shocking for it to come back here.

Really??? I see them all the time. My FIL has one of the new ones. It's actually quite nice. It's a large SUV, but not HUGE. I actually wish there were more in that size-range. My ideal size is an SUV with a serviceable 3rd row without being huge. Most normal 2-row SUV's aren't really that much bigger than the smaller SUV's. Many of the 3rd row ones are huge.

I love the size of the Explorers...I just don't love the looks. Personal preference. Not saying it's ugly.

You live in the United States, right? These things are everywhere. Maybe you aren't thinking of the same vehicle.

I guess this is just truck country. Most SUV drivers are soccer moms now. Guys have chevy/ford pickups or something luxury sedan.

My first car was a Bronco II

College truck was a Ranger. I'd forgotten they discontinued those.

They should wait for OJ to get out before bringing back the Bronco.
Or come out with the limited edition OJ model. All white on the outside, all black on the inside with blood red trim, custom leather gloves included

Explorer is built in Chicago - that probably helps.

This has to be it. You know they have changed the design since the 90's :) . They look good to me has the front end look of a Range Rover.

I was so close to dropping 20k on an early 70s bronco recently. So awesome.

From the last time I was in Texas- I thought they outlawed anything other than trucks.

From my observation, most SUVs in or around major cities never leave the paved road. They are just "Cool" versions of the vastly underrated minivan & station wagon.

Disclaimer: I have a 2001 F150 and a 2001 Audi A6 Avant (wagon), so that may color my perception.

People wants these cars to come back, but they are far more likely to be a bastadized version, like the Chevy Nova, or VW Bettle, than something anywhere near as cool as the original.

Maybe I should say it is no better than a 50/50 shot it is something decent. You're right, there have been some good re-dos.

Don't remember the Chevy Nova re-do but the VW Bug was pretty much the same just updated to modern world. I have never been a fan of the Bug though so

Disagree on the Beetle, but my expectations for a rear engine probably weren't realistic.
Wait... you are talking about an 80's attempt at a Chevy/Ford/Chrysler product? 90% of what the big three did in the 80's was crap.
