Frandsen ruptures Achilles, open door for Velez (1 Viewer)

However, the Giants did obtain Jose Castillo off waivers, but Eugenio Velez could prove to be the better option for both the Giants and fantasy owners.

Here is some recent news on Velez from Rotoworld.

Kevin Frandsen-2B- Giants Mar. 24 - 7:44 pm et

Kevin Frandsen ruptured his left Achilles' tendon in a minor league game on Monday.

Frandsen was testing an Achilles' injury he originally suffered on March 16. GM Brian Sabean declined to comment on the injury pending an MRI, but there's a chance he could miss the entire season with the injury. Eugenio Velez already figured to fill in for Frandsen at the start of the year, but now he could stick around all season and take on a major role. It's also less likely that we'll see Ray Durham traded anytime soon.

Eugenio Velez-2B - Giants Mar. 22 - 7:16 pm et

Eugenio Velez went 3-for-5 with a triple, a double and four RBI as the Giants defeated the Brewers 8-1 on Saturday.

He would have had two triples and five RBI had his shot over Gabe Kapler's outstretched glove in the eighth inning not bounced over the wall. Then again, had the Brewers still been playing Tony Gwynn Jr. in center field, it very likely would have been an out. Velez's chances of making the Giants took a hit with the move to claim Jose Castillo off waivers, but there'd still be room for him initially if Kevin Frandsen goes on the DL. He's hitting .323/.361/.492 with a league-high 13 steals.

Eugenio Velez-2B - Giants Mar. 14 - 8:05 pm et

Eugenio Velez had a two-run homer, an RBI single and two steals after replacing Ray Durham in Friday's 11-6 defeat of the Diamondbacks.

Velez's homer came off Brandon Webb. Outbursts of power will be few and far between from Velez, but he now has nine steals in 11 attempts in 43 at-bats this spring. If he wins a spot on the Giants, that speed will give him some fantasy value.

Eugenio Velez-2B - Giants Feb. 29 - 8:17 pm et

Eugenio Velez had two hits, two steals and two runs scored as a Giants split-squad beat the Cubs 8-6 on Friday.

With Omar Vizquel out and Ray Durham banged up, Velez is in position to receive a long look this spring. He could make the Giants as a reserve if Vizquel opens the season on the disabled list, and his speed would make him worth using in NL-only leagues for however long he's on the roster.

Alrght, that sounds bad. Worst case scenario how long is he looking at the DL?

I was really hoping Frandsen would get a full season worth of at bats this year. His healthy might be the only roadblock to that occuring. I thought it was pretty reasonable with Ortmeier (awful), Durham (he will get hurt), Omar (already hurt), ____insert 3rd baseman here_____ (we don't have a starting 3rd baseman).

It'll be interesting to see what Velez can do if he gets a shot.

Ray Durham is doing his part to help out Velez according to Rotoworld:

Ray Durham missed Tuesday's game with what GM Brian Sabean described as a "touch of flu."

Durham missed the previous five games due to a tight hamstring, and the front office seems to be growing increasingly annoyed. A day after manager Bruce Bochy threatened to put him on the DL if he "can't" return, Sabean suggested Eugenio Velez could be the starting second basemen if Durham doesn't start playing. "I don't know what the big deal is," Durham said, when asked if he was concerned, adding that he'd "probably" play in the team's final three exhibition games.
