Furries?? (1 Viewer)

So I was in Rosemont, IL this past weekend for a softball coaches convention.. As we were pulling into the hotel, it was apparent that some other type of convention was going on.  We saw a ton of people dressed up in animal costumes, walking around.  After a little google research, there was a "Midwest FurFest 2021" going on at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center.

After looking at the convention schedule, it was "interesting" to say the least..

Now I'm not looking down on these people or trying to insinuate they aren't anything other than normal....but I'm just trying to understand.  I'm taking the Ted Lasso approach, "be curious not judgemental"

Anybody have any experience in this situation?

@AAABatteries  goes to these things, maybe he'll want to chime in.

fwiw- we saw a tv doc about these people... damn... 15 years ago? a long time. their outfits are constructed for the sex apparently.

Was just coming in to post the same. I think it was one of those HBO adult docs they used to do

You’re definitely in the right place for feedback.

we have a friend my wife went to school with- good lucking, super talented, really charismatic, loved by all... but weirdly non-sexual ever since she first met him. I tried setting him up with girls and guys- always shot down. and keep in mind- most of our friends are gay and this guy is in fashion- being gay wouldn't have ever been an issue, so it was always strange to all of our friends that he never declared or participated one way or the other. when we saw this doc, we looked at eachother and immediately thought of him... maybe Gary's a furry? Gave me some happiness thinking that he was at least getting some satisfaction somewhere. after 30+ years of knowing him, he finally came out this year. took away that little happiness of thinking he was furry.

That's a long, deep closet. Good for him.
absolutely... we had a collective exhale for him.

but again- so strange... lived in NYC all this time, working in fashion, surrounded by gay friends. if there was a closet, it got emptied out last century.

still kinda bummed he's not a furry.

oh... just made the mistake of googling that documentary to try to find it. I shudder to think what google and my ad-space is going to have in store for me in the coming weeks.

Honestly, Floppo, not in some people's own heads. And he probably had very personal, conflicted reasons.

I can't relate, but I know I have my own neuroses or things I wouldn't like public. And they won't even earn me approbation from certain quarters.

oh- I hear you. but if he was going to be closeted anything, it would've been a closeted straight guy.

or were you just trying to come out about being a furry? I want to be there to support you, gb

And they were probably scratching their furry heads wondering why people would get together for a convention about coaching softball, to each their own...

Indeed.... Hence my post to try and figure them out a little better.  Maybe there's a post right now at furryguys.com about the strange convention going on next to the FurFest in Chicago..

Just wondering if it's based on sex??  Or??   Like I said, the itinerary was a little interesting..  quite a bit of 18+ stuff..

what I remember from the doc... combo of cosplay stuff and sex.

All I can think is about what the inside of those costumes smell like.  If I found love at one of these things, imma require a Silkwood type shower beforehand.
Being Santa for a day or a team mascot does have its downside. Warmer climates for sure.

I'm thinking that a convention of softball coaches would have a higher level of weirdness and depravity than a furrie convention.

I’ve heard of them, but I always thought of them as folks who were just uncomfortable in their own skin. It’s not for me, but I’m not about to vilify anyone if they’re ultimately harmless.

Were you at the Hyatt? My wife worked there for years and the furries convention happens annually. We were actually staying there once when it was taking place. So many of them! Prime people watching.

Is the furrie thing always sexual?

Like if I wanted to dress up in a carebear outfit and knock back some PBRs with some bros, is that NOT being a furrie?

Might replace elliptical bikes.

I am actually.. and the dog costume scene is weird... but I guess I never knew it was a "thing"
It's a "thing."

Honestly, the people who dress up like and then act like animals/pets I find even stranger. Nonetheless, and most certainly, to each his own though and if others enjoy it and it doesn't hurt anybody - have at it.

Saw a gaggle (I assume this is an apt description?) of them at the wharf in Santa Barbara a couple months ago.  I was tempted to run down from the 2nd story restaurant I was at to get some selfies.  That woulda made for some good Facebook/IG commentary.  I chose to continue to drink my beer tho.  Oh well.
