G.Wilson or E.Coleman? (1 Viewer)

I'm in a dynasty league, and both of these guys should be available when I pick next. Gibril Wilson is a starting safety on the NY Giants, and Erik Coleman is a starting safety on the NY Jets. Who do you guys think will have the better career?

I would have to go with G. Wilson. When he played last year, he was a top 5 DB. If he can stay healthy, I see him putting up solid numbers for the next few years. Durability is his only question mark.

I'd have to agree.However...if you believe both players have equal ability/opportunity/etc, your safe pick may be Coleman given his ability to avoid the injury bug. Wilson's shoulder injury was hush-hush last year, but it sounds as if he suffered nerve damage.

Where did you see that it was nerve damage? Did he have an injury history in college? How about Coleman? I know he was healthy last year, but how about his college career?

Also, seeing as you are an Alabama fan, you might not want Wilson on your squad ;)

I'm NOT an Alabama fan. My team name is the Pachyderms, and their logo was perfect for my team.Much to your disgust (after last year's Capital One Bowl game), I am an Iowa Hawkeye alum, and I'm loving life lately! I especially love those game-winning hail mary's as time expires! :lmao:

Gibril Wilson Injury (This is just one of many articles on the web... G-O-O-G-L-E?)As far as injuries in college, Coleman played in 45 games, starting 31 over 4 years.

Wilson only played two years (He also had one year at City College of S.F. - do they even HAVE a team? If so, he didn't play), 21 games w/ 13 starts, all of the starts in his last year. So, it doesn't appear that either had any injury issues in college.

While I think both of them should go on to have long fruitful careers, I cant get over the ball hawking skills that Wilson displayed before he got hurt. He literally turned the Giant defense around. They have not said much about his injury lately and if is healthy this year he should have a very nice fantasy season, even if moved to free safety.

No happy returns for safety Wilson

The injury to Giants safety Gibril Wilson continues to drag on, with no end in sight.

The rookie did not practice yesterday, still suffering the effects of his hit on Cardinals quarterback Josh McCown on Nov. 14, and he might not play again until 2005.

"Obviously," coach Tom Coughlin said, "I'm very concerned right now that every week, I basically get the same story from the medical people. There is progress, but not fast enough to put him back on the field."

The team has called the injury a "burner," which indicates a nerve problem. Wilson said the injury is in the area of the deltoid muscle on his left side. He said he is able to move his arm, lift weights and do most normal activities, but that he is not ready to hit in a game.

NYG Rooke SS Gibril Wilson was inactive for the second straight game with nerve damage in his shoulder. Wilson hurt the shoulder against AZ 11/14 when he collided awkwardly with Cardinal QB Josh McNown, trying to avoid a personal foul as Wilson expected McNown to slide. Wilson was conscientious of hitting McNown because he had been fined $7,500 by the league early in the season for a hit on CLE QB Jeff Garcia. Despite not practicing last week, he reported the pain subsided and flexibility had returned. However, on Sunday he reported it was again sore and range of motion was limited. Treatment will continue and he hopes to return next week. Terry Cousin started again for Wilson at SS and had 3 tackles. Barrett Green returned to the starting lineup at WLB for the first time since hurting his knee on Halloween. He had a good day with 9 tackles (5 solo). Green was ejected in the fourth quarter after an altercation on the Giants sideline with PHI LB Jeremiah Trotter, who had hit QB Eli Manning out of bounds and was flagged for the late hit. Green's actions caused offsetting penalties. Nick Greisen, the man who replaced Green, was inactive nursing an ankle injury suffered the previous week. With all the injuries in the front four, DE Chuck Wiley and DT Kendrick Allen were recently added for depth. Wiley tore his ACL Sunday and joins the list of casualties at end. Former Saint Allen had his first sack of the season and 4 tackles. DT Norman Hand hurt his groin and did not return Sunday, so Allen could quickly see his role increase. Desperate for more help up front, the team signed Regan Upshaw, who was released prior to the season by Washington.

Analysis: Gibril Wilson became the starter at strong safety after Shaun Williams was lost for the season. Surprisingly for a rookie, Wilson not only did an acceptable job, but he dramatically out-played any other safety the Giants have had in recent memory. In fact, DE Michael Strahan said he was the best defensive rookie he's played with since Jessie Armstead. Wilson plays like a cornerback. He is extremely athletic with excellent speed and quickness. Wilson also has a nose for the football as demonstrated by his three interceptions in limited playing time. He is a very aggressive player as a hitter, tackler, and blitzer. The big downside to Wilson is his size (he looks smaller than his listed 6-0, 197lb frame). And Wilson is coming off of a serious neck injury - a burner, which is basically damage to the nerve. It is anticipated that he will recover completely with time, but he missed the second half of the 2004 season with the injury. One wonders if a position switch to free safety or even corner is not far off in his future.

How about Coleman? I know he was healthy last year, but how about his college career?
From what I read about Coleman, he missed time his Freshman and Sophomore year in college due to injury. With that being said, I wouldn't be too overly concerned with injuries that occurred 3-4 years ago. Coleman obviously recovered and was named both 1st-team All Pac 10 and Honorable Mention All-American in '03. Plus, we know what he did last year.

Although I'm a big fan of Coleman and feel he'll improve on his big play numbers this season, Vilma the Tackling Machine may be too much to overcome to push him into elite territory.Gibril Wilson produced equally when his team was ahead or behind, and outperformed Shaun Williams, who had been off to an excellent start. Shaun Williams is cheap for the Giants this year (750K), but next year has a contract number of 3mil. Wilson may have to contend with Williams a little this season, but I think he outpoints him easily, especially with the Giant LB corps. In 2006, Wilson probably moves firmly into elite DB range for the foreseeable future.Coleman isn't chump change, but he'll have to put up Ed Reedish big play stats to crack the top 5 anytime soon.Very interesting year for young safeties. Turning your defense into a dynasty may hinge on how you value Gibril Wilson, Erik Coleman, Madieu Williams, Sean Jones, Bob Sanders, Bryan Scott, Terrance Kiel, Ken Hamlin, Glenn Earl, and Michael Boulware to name a few.

Giants MLB Antonio Pierce may also affect the Giants safety numbers the way Vilma can affect Coleman. In Henderson's defense, Coleman will see time at both safety positions this year, most likely. I can see him as SS in standard formations, and moving to FS on passing downs especially when there is a big TE to cover. This is really the only hole in Coleman's game, his height (5'10") creates a mismatch when covering TE's in the pattern. I think either one of these guys is a solid pick, but I'd probably go with Wilson, mostly because the Jets have depth and youth at the safety positions. Even if Williams can stay healthy this year, I doubt he's there next year, due to his salary cap hit. Wilson is a lock to start for a long time.

CCSF is one of the strongest CC programs in the country that routinely sends players into major programs. Last year Wilson was drafted, this year's alum is Lance Mitchell.Tom

Hmm.. when I saw that he was listed there but played no games (they just listed '-' all the way across the stats line) I figured that they showed the CCSF year just to indicate that it was a year of college eligibility. So, who's on their roster now?
