Game Thread W12 - Pittsburgh V Baltimore (1 Viewer)

Just absolutely wretched play calling at the end of the half there. Dixon has done nothing but good things, why not give the kid a chance?!?

What a joke. They're at the 40 yard line with 15 seconds left and they run the freaking clock out? They essentially have a free play to attempt a throw downfield. At worst, Baltimore intercepts the pass and the clock essentially runs out. At best, they get into field goal range. It made no sense at all............

I would bet Ligshesky's out, barring a total 180 by his coverage units. Even then maybe not.Unless his O starts chugging along at "Gilbride/Sherman" level Arians'll be there til his contract is up.

It wasn't Arians that got lucky. The Steelers were in a lot of close games last year, and had problems moving the offense at times. Then they would get into a hurry up and Big Ben would call his own plays and/or improvise, and the Steelers pulled out one big win after another, including the SB. Arians didn't have much to do with that. I hate to evaluate offensive coordinators because franky I'm not smart enough, in terms of football, to know what goes into to making play-calling decisions. But there seems to be little doubt that Bruce Arians is overly conservative and cautious, and it has cost us this year.

It's not that he's overly cautious at all, IMO. Think about some games this year where he's come out and got greedy and had it blow up in his face. That problem is that he has NO IDEA how to playcall situationally. If things are plugging along and the Steelers are moving the ball well, not getting into many third downs, etc. etc. Arians seems to do just fine.(Or Ben makes him look good by calling audibles, which we really can't know 100% of the time) But situationaly, Arians just sucks. If a playcall needs to be bold, he'll invariably call something like the "draw for a 2 yard loss" kind of thing. If it needs a conservative call, he'll call for the double reverse PA to the third TE. Poor clock management, poor RZ/SY calls, etc etc.

What's frustrating is, despite the injuries, the Steelers should be a better team than last year:

1. We have a healthy Mendenhall, which means a better running game than last year.

2. The offensive line should be more of a cohesive unit than last year. Against San Diego and Denver, I thought they looked great. Since then, they've seemed to regress.

3. The Steelers have Mike Wallace this year, a big upgrade for the 3rd WR.

4. Daniel Sepulveda is healthy this year; compare him to who we had last year (Berger).

All of these things should equate a better team than the one that won the SB. Yet it hasn't happened, and if the Steelers lose tonight, they are in real danger of not even making the playoffs.

Losing Aaron Smith and Troy for most of the season is pretty hard to make up on D.

Not to mention that their special teams has been abysmal compared to last season.

True, but the defense hasn't been awful this year.

some of it, yes. The return coverage is at an all time low, but the return game and punting game is worlds better this year.

I guess the reason it's so noticeable is because the return coverage is directly responsible for a few of their losses this year. Maybe I just haven't noticed it but I haven't found their return game anything special this season. I'll agree with you that the punting game has been a major improvement this year.
 
Not really sure why the Ravens have been removing Rice as much as they have. The offense just seems to move better with him on the field.

 
Great defensive stand. I think the Steelers are better than this team, and we can win this game if Dixon is just allowed to throw the ball.

 
Big time plays back-to-back there by Woodrow and Timmons. Keep Flacco jumpy and keep chipping away at the score.

Ravens have had their big play on O, the Steelers should be due for theirs.
