Game Thread W14 - Pittsburgh V New England (1 Viewer)

So what? Minnesota can't line up and throw the ball so I'm not sure what the difference is. They never attempted to try and be a smash mouth team. They also don't have Adrian Peterson.
Well... Minnesota is clearly better than them at that... and obviously a great rushing offense. I know NE is a great offense. But, they clearly are not such a great offense that they could put a bum in at QB and win. Minnesota can.

There is no penalty for faceguarding in the NFL. There is no rule that says you have to turn around as a defender. Its just that most referees call pass interference if the defender doesnt turn his head. This was covered ad nauseum after last years AFC Championship game when the officials called a bogus pass interference call on Ellis Hobbs when he never touched the defender but also didnt turn his head.

Ok. :goodposting:

Some of you guys can continue to argue about the Patriots. For me, as a Steeler fan, I've seen enough. the Steelers have a good team and a very good defense. Overall, they are perhaps a better team than the one that won the 2005 Superbowl. But they are getting crushed today because they are facing the best offense ever in the history of the sport. Period. I don't need any more convincing.Let's be honest. Nobody is going to stop the Pats this year. Not now, not in the playoffs or Superbowl. They could have lost last week, but that was their last off game. Not going to happen again. As much as I don't want to see it, it will happen.
Pats are very very good in a big big way but the stillers are not as good as you seem to think they are.
Actually in the LR I hope Pats go undefeated... I believe they will fall in the playoffs if the go undefeated. If they lose 1 game.. probably be more hungry.
Dont kid yourself. The Pats are plenty hungry.

Good game by the Pats.... this game sure wasn't decided by the refs. Pitt did not come close to matching Baltimore's intensity.

They came back after half time... and their adjustments and game plan sucked....... and they seriously just caved in like a deck of cards. I don't know why they didn't just keep smashing it up. But, whatever...

*EDIT* To add... If they were playing for pride it would have been about continually putting the pain on... but, they had in their mind winning.. when it started looking bad.. frankly, they look like they gave up.

Good first half by the Steelers. Coaching adjustments weren't evident at all in the 2nd and since the Pats seemed to, it looked almost like they gave it away. I don't "get it", really. It was like two different teams playing for them today. Their coach is either getting an earful from the GM or owner or banging his own head against a wall.

I understand Phil Simms' point how it's hard to defense that real quick pass to Welker but when they jumped on it, Ike swatted it. That would have been one adjustment they should have made IMO. I don't imagine Welker burning them deep so...go for it.

That trick play where Brady heaved it to Gaffney(I think it was Gaffney)...didn't the Steelers burn the Pats on a similar play? The announcers said something then but I couldn't make it out with a baby son crying.

Pats are clearly the better team today. Congrats to the Pats fans who aren't dooshe-bags, you know who you are.

I hope we get a chance in the Playoffs to redeem.

Appreciate the kind words, A. This game was certainly no cake walk. There were just too many huge plays in the New England O that broke the back of the camel. But this was a week to shut up from my personal perspective as a fan, due to the highest regard possible for your boys. Still have tons of respect for that team. If they matchup again in the playoffs, it will be another battle, and again Id show the same respect. Good luck the rest of the way.

gawd the steelers were outcoached, outplayed, out-everythinged today by the much better team. belicheck showed his stuff with the second half adjustments--just completely dominated from a coaching standpoint. tomlin better give anthony smith and the defense the works. they looked defeated after that trick play.

Observations, in no particular order.

Had I elected to start Warner versus Ben in my fantasy league, I would be advancing to the next round of the playoffs, despite Warner's 5 (!!!) picks.

:ptts:

I was stunned at the lack of offensive output from the Steelers. Lots of yards for FWP, but that's about it. This was a GREAT turnaround game for NE's defense after being Baltimore's ##### last week.

It was also a turnaround game for New England's offense. I have say it looked like the coaching staff targetted Anthony Smith in it's game plans.

The difference between Moss with the Vikings and Moss with the Patriots is the latter goes over the middle and is the go to guy when a first down is needed. This is Moss's best year, not just in terms of receiving TDs.

I saw the exact moment when **** Lebeau gave up blitzing. It was right after Wes Welker's third straight reception (4 yards in the first half, 70+ in the second half). NE completely neutralized the blitz package in the second half; it was a thing of beauty.

Pitt didn't play a bad game, but they were flat. They'll get another shot in the playoffs.

:bag:

I will be pulling HARD for the Steelers next week with the hope that this does not happen. Nothing against the Jags but I would rather the Pats face them and either the Colts or Steelers, as opposed to the Colts AND Steelers.

Good game Pats, Brady is so good it's ridiculous. The Steelers played pretty good defense in the first half and still allowed 17 points.... kinda shows how good the Pats are playing this year.

I was surprised by the two long TD passes by the Pats because they were uncharacteristic of Pittsburgh this year. Until today they had only allowed one play over 40 yards.

And I am more surprised by the 13 scored by Pittsburgh that the 34 scored by the Pats... the Steelers needed to convert those first half FGs into TDs in order to have a chance. No matter how good your D plays you still have to outscore the Pats.

Also, I hated the calls on 3rd and goal, and 4th and goal where the Pats made the GL stand, but it wouldn't have mattered. I liked attacking Harrison on 3rd down, but not a jump ball to a guy with a bad ankle... Holmes is quicker than Harrison so I would think a slant would have been better. Then the 4th down gimmick to H. Ward... dumb. I don't think Davenport is an exceptional short yardage runner, but (as they said today during the game) he's only missed on one short yardage opportunity all year... you'd think they'd give him a chance... or at least run some sort of play action from a fake to him. But what the hell do I know

I hope they get to meet again in the playoffs (Pats fans probably do too after today  ).

see? Steeler fans are really likeable.good game both teams

Even though I'm a Steeler fan I predicted a 34-17 final score and came pretty close to that prediction. Being on the road, I just didn't see the Steelers slowing down the Pats passing attack today. That backup safety spouting his mouth off didn't help the cause much either!

Steelers pass D played like they have on the road against non-divisional teams all year. They made Denver, Jets & AZ passing games look stellar...then they allow Brady to ...well to look like Brady when on all cylinders!

Actually the Steelers didn't play that bad on offense and it appeared that the running game is back on track.

Proves my theory that a great offense (Pats #1) more times than not outplays a great defense (Pitt #1)

Actually, your theory is usually wrong. A great defense will usually outplay a great offense. See the Bucs beating the Raiders in the Super Bowl, for example. Today, the Patriots were just too much for a Steelers defense that probably isn't the best in the league, despite their numbers.

I'm going to do some research on that theory. I'm not sure if its right or not, just a gut feeling. I recall SF with #1 offense clobbering SD 55-10. I think SD had the #2 or #3 defense that year ('94?)

Do you think there are any great defenses in the NFL this year? I don't.

Pittsburgh's offense didn't get on the field in the second half. I still have serious concerns about the Pats' defense.
They shut 'em out in the 2nd half. What else do you want 'em to do?
Pittsburgh moved the ball well when they were on the field, although the goal-line stand was nice. It doesn't bother you at all that they cannot stop the run?

The Chargers were 14th in total defense in '94, the year they lost 49-26 to the 49ers in the Super Bowl.

Truly great? Absolutely not. The Steelers have been great at home, but not so good on the road, and that includes their defense. Don't get me wrong, their defense is very, very good, but their number 1 defensive ranking was helped by a very weak early season schedule.

The Pats have had a couple of drives where they've struggled against the run, but they've been much more susceptible to the big pass play. If you want to beat the Pats, you need to be explosive, and you need to shut them down on defense. Running the ball is great, but New England can still play bend but don't break defense with the best of them. If you're relying on the run, it'll be really hard to keep pace offensively. In the playoffs, I'd much rather a team feel they have to run the ball against the Pats than pass, because I think that's a bad strategy for a single game. But in the regular season, I really hope that teams try to pass, because I don't want the already thin front seven to get hurt.

Ya gotta attack a weakness and the Steelers best player was sitting this week so....

But it's more than just a couple drives. The Pats have given up 150 yards or so in two straight games. Given their schedule the teams they face the rest of the year are going to have to pass to keep up. In the longer term, I don't think you need to shut them down. You need to slow them down, hopefully force some turnovers and try to win a shootout. One way to slow them down is to run the ball - I think Dallas and Indy both lost patience with it earlier this year.

Palomalu has missed other games this year and the defense hasn't given up the big plays so it was surprising.
