Game Thread W17 - Pittsburgh V Cincinnati (1 Viewer)

"Today was the first time anybody put him on the spot," Porter said. "I asked him. He said he doesn't know. We love the guy regardless."

Cowher later walked through the locker room with a peaceful smile on his face and his black, double-breasted jacked comfortably unbuttoned. He stopped to embrace one player, then another, for a little chitchat about the game.

They all wanted to know the answer to the overriding question.

"They brought it up to me," said Cowher, who is 161-99-1 overall in 15 seasons at Pittsburgh. "It's hard when I see those guys.

"I know where I'm leaning. I want to make sure I'm thinking clearly about it. I'm not burned out. When I make a decision, it's a well-thought-out one. I'm not a hindsight kind of guy."

Who gets the better draft pick in 2007?
Not sure but the Bengals have the better conference record (6-6 vs 5-7). I am not sure if that is a determining factor or not.
Better division record too. Read on another board that the Steelers would get the 16th pick, 15th if Green Bay wins, which they did.

"That's just another game we shouldn't have lost to another team we feel were better than," said Carson Palmer, who rallied the Bengals with a pair of fourth-quarter touchdown passes.

Quotes like this is why the Bengals are so hated. They haven't won a thing in decades yet they think they are some type of dynasty. :lmao:

Steelers outplayed them twice this year and still Palmer makes statements like this. Better luck next year, Carson. :D

NFL Tiebreaking Procedures: scroll down to see selection meeting criteria.Unlike for playoff qualification and seeding, strength of schedule is the first tie-breaker. The Bengals and Steelers played 14 common games (counting each other as games 13-14), which means that the determining factor is the two other games:

Cincinnati: NE, IND

Pittsburgh: MIA, JAX

Clearly, Cincinnati had the stronger schedule strength, which means that Pittsburgh has the earlier draft pick. (The NFL considers Cincinnati "stronger" for having the same record vs. stiffer competition.)

For what it's worth, here's the draft order from about.com

1. Oakland (2-14)

2. Detroit (3-13)

3. Cleveland (4-12)

4. Tampa Bay (4-12)

5. Arizona (5-11)

6. Washington (5-11)

7. Minnesota (6-10)

8. Houston (6-10)

12. Buffalo (7-9)

13. St. Louis (8-8)

14. Carolina (8-8)

15. Green Bay (8-8)

16. Pittsburgh (8-8)

17. Jacksonville (8-8)

18. Cincinnati (8-8)

19. Tennessee (8-8)

*20. NY Giants (8-8)

*21. Denver (9-7)

*22. New England (from Seattle) (9-7)

*23. Dallas (9-7)

Palmer is in a dream world. The Steelers outgained them 482-295 and led the time of possesion by over 19 minutes on their home field in a game that meant everything to the Bengals. If it weren't for a Parker fumble on the 1 yard line and some favorable calls, the Bengals wouldn't have even been in the game. The Steelers certainly underachieved this season but the Bengals collapse was as bad if not worse. All the Bengals had to do to get to the playoffs is win ONE of their final three games and they folded like a lawn chair. If I were a Bengals player I would be very pissed at myself.

Well stated as usual, GB.Neither team covered itself in glory in 2006, but Palmer apparently is unaware that it is 11 games and counting since the Bengals last outgained the Steelers (Dec. 30, 2001 for the record). More to the point, in the past two seasons (spanning five games), the Steelers have outgained the Bengals 1971-1494, which is an advantage of 95.4 yards per game. That the Bengals have won two of those five games is more of an indictment of the Steelers than an endorsement of the Bengals. Of course, there's more to winning than compiling a yardage advantage, but in three of the past four meetings, the Steelers have outgained the Bengals by at least 119 yards...I'm sure Palmer is just trying to show belief in his team. It can be argued that this is good leadership, but at some point, the Bengals need to realize that while they are talented, they are not nearly as good as they collectively think they are. Palmer may have accomplished more good in the long term if he had focused on the less than inspired effort a potential playoff team showed in their final game against a heated rival. Steeler fans hope the Bengals continue to talk better than they walk, because if they ever get focused, they would be a serious championship threat. Every time the Bengals talk about how the better team lost (when it's them), they delay their progress toward true greatness. Last year of course it was Palmer's injury, this year it's the "better team" losing in at least 3, maybe 4 games. The only common element through these past few years is that the Bengals keep coming up short. That's not what the "better teams" do.What might be most interesting -- and unusual -- about this series is that only one of the past nine games between the two teams has been won by the home team (PITT in 2004).

:X It reminds me of 2001 when, after the Steelers lost to the Patriots in the AFC Championship Game, Kordell Stewart said the same thing. One of Kordell's biggest faults (and he had several) was his inability to accept blame for a loss. There was always some excuse or it was someone else's fault or "the better team lost".

Palmer is a very good QB, one of the best in the NFL, but he would be better off if he realized the Bengals weren't a very good team this season.
