Gates injury news (1 Viewer)

Figured we should get this started. Almost hoping this isnt more than a 4-6 week thing and us Gates owners can get by with backup TE until he comes back for the playoffs.

Antonio Gates' injured left ankle was in a protective boot following the Chargers' Week 6 loss to St. Louis.According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, "it doesn't look good." Gates was held in check by the Rams pre-injury, managing just 12 yards on two catches. He also has a long history of ankle problems. The Chargers didn't just lose Sunday's game to a much lesser-talented St. Louis team. They may have lost their top two pass catchers with Malcom Floyd (hamstring) also hurt. Oct. 17 - 5:16 pm et

Gates injured his left ankle in the second quarter. He came back on the field for a series before he was taken to the locker room late in the first half. He was not on the sideline for the second half.

Gates got hurt blocking on a carry by running back Ryan Mathews.

"I got tripped up and I guess some guys fell on the back of my leg," said Gates, who was wearing a walking cast in the locker room. "That's initially how it started. Then on a pass down the middle on the last play I was in, someone fell on my ankle. I just couldn't go. I couldn't move."
Antonio Gates to have MRI on ankle

I didn't see the game, but from accounts I read they were taping his ankle in preparation for him to re-enter the game and I saw someone say that he re-entered before half. However he didn't come back on after half. I feel as if this was a 4-6 week type of thing he or the staff wouldn't have even bothered taping it up or thought of putting him back in there. Of course wearing a protective boot "doesn't look good", that comment means nothing to me. Wearing a boot can be a precautionary measure for something like a sprained/rolled ankle as easily as it can be for a broken one. Wait and see, but I am optimistic.

From the blurb I linked to above, it sounds like there may have been two separate incidents in which someone fell on Gates' ankle. Like you, I didn't see the game, so maybe the blurb and/or my interpretation is incorrect, but that's how I'm understanding it at this time.

Antonio Gates to have MRI on ankle
Good find. Bad news, but lets know what we're dealing with and get it over with... I can't believe I traded for Gates after losing Finley. Unreal. There goes my RB depth and another stud TE. Gotta love the NFL. It giveth and taketh away...

Yeah...I am going to go ahead and hope that this ISN'T a 6 week type of injury.

Give me a week or two and let me have a breather from these injuries. Every one of my starters...

Pretty juicy schedule coming up too. If we are looking at 4 weeks that will be after their week 10 bye. Have Rivers too double kill with Floyd and Gates. And teh NFL wants to move to 18 games, just ridiculous.

"Gates injured his ankle blocking on a running play. He remained in the game, but the injury worsened when a defensive back fell on his leg after Gates caught a pass in the second quarter.

"I just couldn't go," Gates said. "I couldn't move it at all. It was still really stiff, and I couldn't put pressure on it. My percentage of going, compared to putting a healthy Randy (McMichael) and Kris (Wilson) in there, wasn't worth it."

Gates' diagnosis won't be complete until an x-ray and an MRI are conducted Monday, but early indications aren't good. He left the locker room in a protective boot, which suggests he could miss a week or more."

IMO the fact that Gates is saying he couldnt go over a healthy reserve means were not looking at anything season ending or extremely extensive....I hope.

Yes, definitely two incidents. The first was the only one commented on by the announcers. I taped the game and at the half of the Colts/Skins game Ill go into the tape and find the 2nd.

All things considered (reading all post-game interviews), it sounds like 0-2 weeks to me unless they get surprised on the MRI tomorrow.

Gates can put no pressure on injured ankle

Antonio Gates tried to reenter Sunday's game after injuring his left ankle, but could put no pressure on the leg.

"I couldn’t put any pressure on it," said Gates, donning a protective boot. "On that last play where Philip hit me down the middle, a guy fell on it again. The pain became really difficult to deal with." The San Diego Union-Tribune confirms that Gates' consecutive starts streak (85 games) is in danger. He's scheduled to undergo tests Monday morning. is it just me or is the number of injuries noticeably higher this season to noteworthy players.obviously it's not just my team (although i'm dealing more with the poor performances of players recovering from injuries in-season [best, mathews]), but it's really alarming how many people are missing games and already seem really beat up in the first 1/3rd of the season.

OK, found the 2nd ankle tweak. It happened at 9:49 left in the 2nd quarter on the 3rd and long where Gates blatantly dropped the slant for what would have been a 20+ yard gain. As he dropped the pass the LB unnecessarily (IMHO) reached for his ankles and tripped him up. He fell in pain. He got up instantly and slightly hobbled off at what looked like 3/4 speed (it cut out before he began his jog off). There was no injury timeout or anything of that nature. Gates was not in for their only remaining possession of the half without mention from the announcers. Again, unless something surprising pops up, I'd say day-to-day or no more than a couple weeks sort of like Andre Johnson.

Pretty weird that his consecutive streak is 85 games and then this happens.

just like Pierre Thomas vs Atlanta?

Well for all those holding out some hope just remember that Ahmad Bradshaw wore a protective boot on his ankle virtually every week last season and still played on game days!

So I enter the year with Gates and Finley as my 2 TE's in my CFL dynasty league thinking ya that is pretty outstanding.

In another league I lost my game 113-111 all I needed was another 2 pts from my superstar Gates.

Just watched Kevin Acee's wrap-up. He's the Chargers beat writer and a very reliable source. Last thing he said was that it doesn't look good for Gates next week. Who knows -- the guy is very tough but he was clearly in pain today.

Thanks for the info, lets hope its 1-2 weeks max.

Just let him heal up & get healthy. No need to turn it into a Mathews situation where it becomes a month+ thing.

Agree, although the problem for the Chargers is that almost every game is a must-win at this point and Floyd is also banged up. Not a good situation.

Does Randy McMichael have any value if Gates is out? He is listed as #2 on Chargers site.
Yup, especially if Floyd is out. They'll have the worst receiving corps in the league at that point with the best QB....so even guys like McMichael could stand out.PS also downgrade Rivers.

I don't know...McMichael did absolutely NOTHING as the main TE option in St. Louis the past 3 years, and they had nobody at WR either...

I just don't think he has it.

There are probably only two that I could imagine using in a pinch.

Fred Davis and Ben Watson...outside of that I would think that every other TE with even an iota of value is on someone's roster.
