Genrepalooza - Whoa oh ohhh, Listen to the music (5 Viewers)

I appear to be caught up with this pick:

29th round: "Sweetheart", Franke and The Knockouts (Blue Eyed Soul)

"Franke" being Academy-Award-winner Franke Previte, who got his Best Original Song Oscar for penning "I've Had the Time of My Life" (Dirty Dancing). Six years earlier, Previte's record company sent 45s of "Sweetheart", pressed on red vinyl, to DJs throughout the Northeast. The track got enough airplay to get The Knockouts a gig on American Bandstand. "Sweetheart" would eventually rise to #10 on the Hot 100.

Round 29.xx

A miraculous fifty or so seconds. A cover of an obscure one by The Queers to begin with, so we get all the things that make punk great:

a) In under a minute

b) Solid three-chords only

c) Punk pioneers

d) '90s R&B shift applied

We used to play this for the tours at our University. The tour guides, for the most part, all got a chuckle when they'd hop by our dorm room and hear this booming from the second story of the hall we were in. So lame. We at least thought we were cool, even if all evidence was to the contrary. Anyway, I would wind up making many punk mixes for people before the digital age we're in now. Back then, those of us that lived in record stores 24/7 were somewhat relevant. Now it's about how you know it and who you know and digital access, though they're really trying to slow that down with the cassette tape and punk house resurgence of this decade. But I digress. Just remember...unless you're willing to fully drop out, the chances are you're behind the curve...and this is

Genre: Punk/Hardcore

Artist: The New Bomb Turks

Song: This Place Sucks

It might not be on Spotify, in which case I'll take another of her songs but for blue eyed soul I'll take the beautiful Norah jones rendition of black hole sun, performed at the fox theater in Detroit. The fox and the song both bring back good memories.

Looks like we can move on to the 30th round today as well.  This whole category could be Sabbath and I would be fine with it, so I will add so more to the mix.

Genre:  Classic Metal

Selection: 30.xx: BLACK SABBATH - SNOWBLIND

Round 30.xx

Genre: Riot Grrl

Artist: The Distillers

Song: I Am A Revanant

There are other, truer, riot girl songs still on the board, but this is is probably a top ten punk song of mine ever, so you kind of know how much I like it. Brody rips through this. A song about death and redemption, it inspired a spoken word poem of mine (Oof. Yes. I did that once. Thank God I never got up on stage.) which is awfully tough to do.

Art for art's sake. The album Sing Sing Death House, as me and @Mister CIAhave emailed each other in prior drafts, is pitch perfect. It's just awesome.

Whoa. Thought I'd hit the wall there the past day or so. Needed a break from all this internet stuff. Awesome punk/HC picks from everybody. Looking forward to seeing the playlist.

28.xx  Rent (OBC) - Will I? (Broadway)

I've seen Rent at least 10 times, 4 or 5 times on Broadway.  Someone drafted Seasons of Love, another good one, but this is my favorite.  As mentioned in the Youtube comments, it's the same 4 lines repeated, but it packs a punch.  It might not do so in the FBG Spotify mix, but in context it definintely does.

30.xx  Montrose - Space Station #5  - Classic Metal

I don't think Metal existed as a genre in 1973, it was just Hard Rock.

The board isn't taking copy/paste of large HTML fonts anymore.  I've tried a couple of tags but they didn't work either.

Round 30  -  Kiss Me deadly  -  Lita Ford  -  Riot Grrl

For some reason, this video stopped being available anywhere.  Totally sucks.  There's nothing quite like watching Lita crawl around licking blocks of ice.

There are three unrolled categories left.  If we want to end this thing this week, I can pick one of the three remaining categories and roll two more random genres to go along with it.

Or we can continue to let fate rule.

To close this off why not do the following:

The next 3 rounds can be dedicated to the 3 unrolled categories.

Any other category that has only been rolled once comes up again, including the 3 above.

We close with a round or 2 of whatever category you want.

If you want Tim to finish, as i think he is on an enforced board holiday, you may want to tag @Adam West

I'm good with either. But will vote for option A. So that will be 6 more rounds, to round 37? Then how about 3 rounds of whatever we choose to make it an even 40.

I think this qualifies as old metal, though where the line between metal and hard Rock is up for debate.  This Damn song was stuck in my head as I was leaving my last assignment as one of the people I had to work with was a nice black woman named Betty.

Black Betty, ram jam

This is my choice, but I am fine either way.

Fine either way.

31.xx

Genre: Riot Girl

Artist: Yeah Yeah Yeahs

Song: Maps

This song feels like it should be on the playlist, all things considered.

I'd prefer the first option but will go with the majority, which looks like it's going to be the dice.  This could go another 5 weeks.
