Genrepalooza - Whoa oh ohhh, Listen to the music (3 Viewers)

Not judging your pick. Love Joan and love the song. Picked it in a previous draft also not realizing it wasn't on Spotify. But you can't put something Nickleback-adjacent up and expect me to keep my powder dry.
okfine

I found an article about your genre this weekend and:

Skateboarding is a big part of it along with some lesser issues.

t was defined by its independent spirit and its all-inclusive nature, with an emphasis on social justice and female empowerment. Music was a bedrock of the movement, and bands such as ######## came to define its sound. It has, and still does, tackle issues and ideas about race, class, queer culture, the environment, skateboarding, mental illness and body dysmorphia.

Yeah, he's on the ten minute clock. Got five to go or something like that. I'm not keepin' track anymore, just wanna speed it along.

Riot Grrl had me lock & loaded on one band from the beginning .

10.11 The Runaways - California Paradise  - live in Japan , subpar audio but nice glimpse into the way they commanded the stage as teens

Album version

Very good live audio version from 76

Cherie Currie still has it & looking good too

Edge play - A documentary on The Runaways

Didn't want to go with the obvious choice from The Runaways and passed on my favorite Runaway song  . Definitely wanted a Cherie Currie lead song over JJ .This band fascinates me , read 3 books on them over the years

Quick post - here is my first Riot Grrryl pick.  She plays a mean guitar, is easy on the eyes and I've picked from her albums before in the six-word draft.  This song was my intro into her work.

Grace Potter (and the Nocturnals) - Paris (Ooh La La)

You can skip me.  I have 0 clue where to go for this.  There is a world band that I liked the album from a few years ago, but for the life of me I can't remember their damn name.  I am being stubborn and just combing through lists and 100s of albums to try to figure it out.

Menudo?

I think I got my world pick, got my riot girl pick second. My favorite positive hardcore song since a certain D.C. band cut a certain hardcore song. Love these categories, hard though they may be.

My draft prep somehow led me down a Carole King rabbit hole last night, which is odd because she doesn't really fit in any of our categories here. How bad is it that I'd never listened to Tapestry before and also i thought she was black

Great, great album.  Was one of the first 5 albums I bought as a kid.

RD 10   GENRE:  RIOT GRRRRL

JUMPERS - SLEATER-KINNEY

Seems like a bit of Sleater-Kinney overload ...sorry, but I love this song.  I am embarrassed to say I was not aware of this band until their appearance on Letterman with this song.    OMG - kick ###!!  I was immediately drawn in - Unbelievable lead singer's voice (and next door MILF-y type), Carrie doing her best Pete Townshend impression and loved the drummer.

Letterman show

Official song video

Liz Phair is in the riot grrrl category, isn't she? Anyhow, I love this song and the album ("Exile in Guyville")

Liz Phair "##### and Run"

Poignant lyrics- she just wants a boyfriend.

I find myself wanting to get sniped in this draft because of the collaborative playlist aspect. I want to pick songs that I think people won't know but there are some stone cold classics that people might not be as familiar with, like Carole King :bag:  so if someone takes something I was going to take it just one more great song on the playlist.

Also someone pick something.

Make-up pick:

10.04: "Voices Carry", Til Tuesday (Riot Grrl)

Aimee Mann has to be considered at least a proto-Riot Grrl, right :D ?
Responsible for one of the weirdest days of my life. Started my own small, local music mgmt concern after i got sued out of the biz in '75, became quickly uncomfortable with the legal limitations upon my participation and turned it over to my two scouts when i got into radio. My giant house was where everybody practiced/partied so i was still connected to BSharp til i moved west a couple years later and i always took calls from and made calls for m'boys.

Early 80s, almost completely out of touch with guys, i get a call from one of em. Ever since everybody, including BSharp, had passed on all 20 of Tom Scholz demos (i heard versions of "More Than a Feeling" in at least five different genres) before Boston exploded for Epic, the local music biz had got overamped about everybody who got a li'l buzz. BSharp was never in the loop on that kinda ####, though.

Get a call out in the desert from m'boy Larry who begs me to fly out because they got THE hot new band holed up in a fancy suite away from the madding crowd of bizsters who have all decided they HAVE to sign them all of a sudden. He says the chick singer is crazier than a bag of dancing mice but was impressed that the founder of the company had worked with Bonnie Raitt, Ellen McIlwaine and other eccentric 70s chick legends she admired. Had a brief phone convo with Miss Mann and hopped the next plane to meet with her.

Get there, Larry's pulling on me endlessly, Jack's rolling his eyes and they were both pretty mellow dudes so i know this all is off the rails. Sit in this suite which musta cost them a year's bookings for 24 hours waiting for 'til Tuesday, who are supposedly off doing some promotional thing but will be RIGHT back. See a couple protopunk types connected with em but neither pale hide nor piled hair of Miss Mann or her partner. BSharp virtually ruined itself holding that suite for several days after some shark had spirited them away, so much i never billed em for my flight. Weird ####in deal.

Speaking of BSharp, now that everybody has made their alt-country pick, i'll make a shoutout to an old friend (who owes me 14,789 cigarettes), BSharp client, and (with the greatest genius who slept 22 hrs a day, dug Nap) Vermont legend thru band N-Zones (and their party anthem "Boogie 'til Your Head Caves In") and Pinhead (BSharp got them 3 dates opening for The Clash), til he became a founding member of Ur-alt-country band Blood Oranges, is now in Son Volt and. as you can easily see, is one of alt's leading shredders.

Okay, changed my mind. Going Riot Grrl. This is my favorite hardcore song of the past twenty years, along with another female one, so I can't leave it out there and need to draft it. Her politics are radically different than mine -- that's fine. We get to beauty in different ways. This would easily be punk song 1.1. She's written for the NYT, an eloquent voice not tempered. This is the best song I've heard since "Sailin' On" by Bad Brains and the next one I might pick. I think it's a latter-day riot girl pick considering all of the surrounding stuff, including cutting a menstrual record. (She put her ##### in the record).

Peace.

Genre: Riot Grrl

Artist: Perfect #####

Song: I

I am full of light

I am filled with joy

I am full of peace

I had this dream that I forgave my enemies - Meredith Graves
