Disgruntled defensive end Osi Umenyiora ended his holdout yesterday, reporting to the Giants much earlier than expected. With good reason.
Word is from ESPN that the Giants are attempting to trade the former Pro Bowler, but they are seeking a 1st round pick for it. One knowledgeable writer, Mike Garafolo of the Newark Star-Ledger, sees Seattle, St. Louis, Denver and Atlanta as possible destinations.
But what about the Patriots? Would that be a trade youd like to make?
Well, its expensive. Umenyiora has two years and $7.1 million remaining on his contract, and if the G-Men are looking for a first, I dont see it happening.
The Patriots under Bill Belichick have never given up a first rounder for a current player. The most hes given up is a second rounder and a seventh for Wes Welker… which worked out pretty well. Oh, and the team did give up a first to the Jets to acquire Belichick in 2000. That turned into Shaun Ellis.
With the Patriots looking at playing more 4-3 scheme, Umenyiora is a player who should spark interest. But it would be tough for Belichick to make it happen
