I was going against larry fitz and SF pntr and down 16 points going into monday night...All I had was my main man Pat Willis....

I thought I was finished since fitz has been hot all season...I didn't get to watch the game, but on tuesday when I was going to see how much I lost by, I was pleasantly surprised to see him throw up 29 pts and fitz was shut down to 2 catches...

Willis has produced all season and deserves a shout out! If you have the SF Giant, you know what I'm talking about...if you have played against him, you know he's trouble...

Now I'm in the finals with better matchups for my players...Pat Rocks!!

well he is very very good but i don't know if i'd call him the best LB'er in the game. i would assume if u were the best LB'er in the game u'd be wearing the defensive headset................he doesn't(Goldson).

I don't think the headset has any bearing on how good a linebacker a player may be. I was under the impression that the Niners (and the Ravens last year, too) put the comm in a safety's helmet out of fear that it would be damaged by the bigger hits at the point of attack.ETA: Actually, here's Singletary's most recent reasoning for the communicator being in the secondary.

The green dot is moving on. Safety Dashon Goldson will now wear the helmet with the radio in it, and not just for Halloween. He'll be the one who makes the last second checks to his fellow defensive backs. The move was made so the secondary gets the last word on what to look for.

This could solve the communication problems head coach Mike Singletary referred to early this week. Previous green dot helmet man Patrick Willis couldn't always get the last second check to the secondary, where it's urgently needed. For example, 49ers defensive coaches warned the defense about warding against the deep pass to tight end Owen Daniels before he scored on a 42-yard touchdown pass. But Willis couldn't get the call to the secondary in time.

It means that calls might not filter to the defensive line, but Singletary said if the line messes up there are linebackers and defensive backs that can prevent a touchdown, not so with a mistake in the secondary.

"I'm for anything that makes our defense better," Willis said. "If it makes me play faster, I'm all for it."

wtf does the headset have to do with anything? <_< best LB in the game = pwilly. its not even close

right now he is great and has a debate as being the best but there are others and he also has to maintain his status. Yes nobody can deny his fantasy value anyone would have him over 99percent of the rest of the league.

like i said i think Willis is very very good, just not the best LB'er. that Quote IMO insinuates more than Singletary thinking the helmet mic would get damaged. i take it as Willis couldn't make all the calls and that last part "If it makes me play faster, I'm all for it" is very interesting. the only way IMHO that interrpets is that less thinking or responsibility will help him on the field. i can't be the only one who interprets it that way.

His speed really is sometjing the other best LB'ers don't have. Someone that size running 4.4? I find these 'best' arguments kind of high scholl-ish.

I don't like singling any player about all the rest but he is in the top 5.

I agree. The edit was to show that the concern for damage was no longer the primary concern. Not having to make last minute secondary calls would make anyone play faster. Seems unusual that the headset comm is used to make secondary calls separate from the defensive call, but maybe that's more standard that I'm aware of. And I'd absolutely interpret that the same way as you do -- being absolved of having to direct the secondary into the correct position will surely help him on the field. I don't think that makes him less of a linebacker. It's not that he's unable to make the calls, it's that his time is better spent elsewhere.

Give Ray Lewis more time to study the offensive formation, get his front seven into position, make defensive audibles based on late movement, etc rather than having to take a couple of seconds to align the secondary and he's a more formidable player as well. Was he less of a linebacker last season when Ed Reed had the comm?

With regard to the best linebacker in the league discussion, there aren't many linebackers who have been so successful in run support, coverage and pass rush as Patrick Willis. Whether he's clearly the best backer in the league is up for debate, but there's no question he belongs in the discussion.

Well lets see how about Ray Lewis!!!! Willis is a freak but is he a leader? I would like to Willis and SF become the next Ravens and win games with there D then I will not argue with you. I think Lewis is the Best because he makes everyone around him better and even at 30 something he is amazing!!!

Ray Lewis is a beast, and has been a LONG time, but I dunno that even in his heydey he had the gifts that Willis does. Not saying that makes Willis better, but it's been a while since I've seen a LB as purely, physically, talented as he is, and I can remember the New York Sack Exchange. So far as him being a "leader"....he goes and gets 'em...add a little ra-ra fist pumping and you got Ray Ray.
